Has anyone tried an XDP-4000X with one of those adapters though? The reason
I ask is because though it is true that you can get USB-Serial adapters to
use serial devices on USB ports, not every device works with those adapters.
Most do but if someone has verified that it would be better as it wouldn't
be a good idea to get a brand new laptop with only USB ports hoping it will
work only to find out that it may not...

I've tried and it doesn't work because it cannot be recognized as any comm port...don't
know why...I even asked my roommate whose a computer science major and
he said that it will not recognize the usb as a serial port because it's configured
as plug and play? I'm not sure exactly what the problem is...I also tried
the parallel port to serial port thing...that didn't work either, so I just
borrow laptops here and there. MOST laptops will have a serial port, it isn't
phasing out, it's just that slimmer laptops will usually not have them.

The thought of using USB is pretty much a lost cause, unless someone can
convince Sony to supply a device driver for the 4000x in windows 98+, or if
someone out there has written more in depth software for the USB port to
emulate the 'com' ports. Otherwise, it's just not gonna work. Don't even
bother trying. (But if someone does know of any software that does make the
USB port to emulate other ports, let us know, that could be really cool, and
that is entirely possible!)
However, the Parallel port will work, just not as easily as one would think.
It isn't going to be as simple as going out to get the part that changes the
25 pin parallel to the 9 pin serial port . Honestly, I haven't looked into
it as to whether a conversion module is available for the parallel - serial
connection, but I'm sure there is. But the problem with doing this is, you
are losing the 'null' status when using one of these standard conversion
pieces.
As I understand it, you would have to implement another conversion into the
setup to make a proper connection. It may be as simple as another serial -
serial conversion, but it all depends on the parts you use from the
beginning. Honestly, that's the best I can explain it, I know it will work,
I just don't need to try it, since my laptop has a serial output readily
available.
Again, it's much easier to use a laptop that already has one of these ports,
and if you're thinking about buying a slimmer laptop with modified
connections, it most likely won't have a parallel port either.

While it is best to get a laptop with a serial port....... I would not be one
to give up easilly..... I am sure you could get a USB or II to
work.......... if you have to figure it out or you have no other options, you
would...... :) Neccessity is the mother of invention afterall right???
