The optical out simple transmits the digital signal in its purest form to be
processed later. There is no way to control volume of an optical signal.
So, yes you would need the 910 for all of its functions and the Pioneer
would be a cd slot.

Your good friends name is Will Thorne. And if I'm not mistaken the P-9
combo was sold a week ago. Haven't seen any others for sale lately.

I don't like the C910 or C90, IMHO, so wanted a different HU and the new
Pioneer DEH-P77MP is so nice and if the volume on that unit had worked i
would of went ahead with it but wont bother now.

This statement is not really true. It is indeed possible to vary the
volume/level of the signal in the S/PDIF format (whether it is optical or
coaxial). There are many different kinds of equipment that allow the change
of volume digially for the S/PDIF output stream. Examples include audio
equipment such as MD decks that allow you to change the output level and
computer USB sound devices (with optical outputs) that vary the volume as
you change the volume control(s) in Windows...
However, you're correct in that car HUs like these discussed do not do
that--the digital processor is used to control volume and the output from
the HU is a constant, 0dB reference level straight signal. Indeed using
another HU and simply connecting to the input on the XDP unit would require
all sound controls to be done through the Sony head making it a rather
awkward setup...

The sound is transmitted to the processor through the optical cable.. It is
then processed by whatever electronics are used, be it a sound card or
another digital processor. This is the main reason no one has done a stand
alone all-in-one processor for the car. If you are adjusting the output
through the optical out, you are using a form of dsp in the source. At that
point you might as well do all of the processing
