Hello gang,
I currently have my 4000x on Ebay and the first 400.00 plus shipping takes
it. I will include a 10ft. data cable, and 13ft unilink as well as 13ft
Fiber Optic cable. The unit is in pristine shape, not a scratch on it.
Was used in a IASCA competition car. Please email me with any questions.
Here is a link to my install http://www.sounddomain.com/id/focalaudio. I
used Matt's picture on Ebay because of the good photo.
Thanks,

With the 210EQ, and the 4000X you can connect the changers' AUDIO feeds as
you said--one to the digital connection (toslink) and one to the analog
connections (RCA L/R), but neither of those DSPs allow the connection of
more than one UniLink connection for the changers so you need the MCA to
facilitate connecting two or more changers to the single UniLink connection.
The U50D was unique on the other hand, in that you could connect two
changers to it without a multi-changer adapter. Why they didn't keep that
feature on the subsequent DSP units I don't know--I guess Sony just wanted
to make more money on the MCA units that need to be purchased at additional
cost.

actually, the XT-XM1 has a pass thru for the changer already.
I figured that out like 10 minutes after the original mail :)

Actually my experience has shown that the XDP unit (at least the 210EQ that
I use) doesn't "detect" the optical signal by the S/PDIF by the carrier
being on or off. (It does detect whether the carrier is on or off for
muting purposes but it doesn't actually detect the signal type that way).
Instead the selection of the XDP unit on which input to use (analog or
digital) depends on the switch (ANALOG/DIGITAL switch) that is on the
changer and/or head unit (the C90 uses a software switch to accomplish this,
BTW).
If the switch is on DIGITAL and that changer or HU is selected then the XDP
uses the optical input. If the switch is in the ANALOG position for the
selected device then the XDP uses the analog inputs. Any device that
doesn't have a digital output has its "switch" permanently set in the ANALOG
position. (It doesn't actually have a switch but a device with only analog
outs always sends via UniLink information stating that it is in ANALOG
mode).
The reason I know this is because I have tried a little experiment with my
XDP-210EQ. If you have ever noticed, switching a changer to DIGITAL mode
activates the optical output but it does NOT de-activate the analog
outputs... What I did was I connected the changer's UniLink, set the switch
to digital and connected the RCAs instead of the Toslink cable. Sure enough
there was no audio eventhough the RCAs still had analog signal going through
them (verified by connecting them directly to an amp). Therefore the
conclusion I came to is that the XDP "knows" which signal type to look for
not by detection but by what the changer or HU "says" (via UniLink) about
its signal type output...
For that reason even if you had an analog device connected to the analog
changer input, if your changer was set to digital and connected by Toslink,
disconnecting the optical cable would only mute the sound not switch to the
analog input. If someone wanted to go that way (the "ghetto" AUX input)
then you would have to use all analog connections and physically switch the
RCAs to the AUX device every time you wanted to use it (or use some kind of
RCA switching device).
Like you said, though, this is too much hassle for most people (plus the CD
has to be spinning in the changer in the meantime) so the XA-300 UniLink
AUX-In adapter is the best way to go. Kind of expensive, but I've seen
them on eBay for $88 + shipping brand new which is at least a little cheaper
than the $100 tag it carries almost everywhere else.

Oh, that's good. But this pass-thru is just like on the TV tuners right?
It allows for one changer only? I didn't realise you were trying to add
just a single changer to the XM tuner--I thought you were trying to connect
more than one changer...
The pass thru on the XM1 is fine to connect the XM tuner and a changer but
if someone wanted more than one changer they would still have to have an
MCA, I believe...
Anyhow, hope the info on the 6-disc changers helped...

Yeah the C8850 had HX DSP and is not *supposed* to be able to control an
external DSP. (Even if it did have some control, it probably wouldn't work
fully/properly with one).
The C780 does have DSP control. The C680, however did not have DSP Control
though... It wasn't an ES model and DSP control wasn't a feature of the
deck. It might be an "undocumented" feature as I know some of the Sony HUs
that aren't supposed to be able to control a DSP can still do it. To be on
the safe side though, I wouldn't go for a C680.
The C880 on the other hand, is also a good choice. It is essentially the
same as the C780 but has a VC digital filter, VoiceGuide, and BBE--the
latter two of which are lost when connected to an XDP unit, however.
The C7850 is another (one of the last units) to have DSP control as well.
It was similar to the C780 but had VoiceGuide (again lost with the DSP
connection anyhow) and slightly different display.
I'm also pretty sure it was the CDX-M650 which was one of the only (if not
the only) ABP unit that had DSP Controls. This unit however, was an Xplod
model and therefore lacked ESP shock protection.
As for the price--you can indeed pick up units like these for pretty good
prices. I purchased a used but in good condition, CDX-C7850 a couple months
ago for less than $100 US shipped from eBay. These units often go for
prices around that area and funny enough are by-and-large far better than
any of the Xplod units costing much more today...

Ahhhhhh ok...... i had that one before.... maybe thats why i was thinking
that....... And yes, why they didn't keep that...... i guess the "brains" behind
it all thought it was useless and it would prevent them from selling the other
adapter.... oh well.......

Oh no... I picked up a 8850 on ebay; its suppose to arrive
tomorrow. Hopefully it will have some undocumented support... I know that
I had an 8050 ( I think it was ) and it wasn't suppose to be able to
control the DSP but it did - mostly. The volume control was a little
erratic sometimes.
Frankly, from what I'm finding out about Unilink bus in my driver
development, I'm surprised this stuff works at all, especially in systems
will lots of components (multiple changers, XM, XA-300 - the latter
actually emulating three changers and generating traffic as if it were
three separate devices.)
