The external inverter "box" is where I had it with the other HUs that had a
similar external inverter--it just hangs down behing the HU (I bundle some
of the cord so it is shorter) and rests below the HU and away from the RCAs.
But the closeness to the RCAs wouldn't make a difference I don't think.
The sound isn't from the speakers, nor is it from the external box it is
from the display/faceplate on the HU itself. Every Sony HU I've had with
the external inverter has some VERY SMALL amount of hum which eminates from
the FP. However this one seems markedly louder. Any display that
incorporates the type of EL & LCD will generate some noise, this is
unavoidable. But the C7850 I have is just a noticeable amount louder than
it should be, IMO.
I've tried moving about the external box to no avail. The noise from the FP
stays the same. However I did notice the wires going to the inverter box
were slightly different and had an additional black wire which is simply
screwed onto the inverter casing (it looks like some sort of ground wire).
I think I will try to disconnect that wire and see if anything changes. I
doubt it will though. Either this model just has a relatively noisy
inverter or it is just my unit :( It isn't that bad/noticeable as long as
the stereo is on, but driving around with the HU off I can detect the noise
(something I couldn't do without complete silence on the other models)...
