--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: Randy Visentine <jvisentine@yahoo.com>
Hello fellow Sony heads,
I finally got a few pics of my install.
It is about 75% done - waiting to get my new door
panels built for a pair of Vifa 8.75" mid/woofers. I
am currently running 6.5" MB Quarts in the stock
location for mids. The Vifa 8.75" are said to have
response to over 2KHz, and I plan on using the analog
crossover in the Sony XM-7547 to allow a 2.2KHz
crossover to the 1" tweeters in the A-Pillars. If not
to my liking, I will add a small dome mid in the
A-Pillar and go with a true "Quad Amped" system and
loose my rear-fill.
It is in a 1999 Tacoma 4x4 V-6 5-Speed X-tra Cab. I
needed to snap a few shots for insurance, so I thought
I would post them.
It is not all fiberglassed out with stupid paint
schemes and flying actuators at every turn, it is a
"no-frills" clean, LOUD, reference system...That gets
listened to AT LEAST 1 hour EACH DAY!

Hello XDP-People,
How is your Phatbox working on your CDX-C90r and the XDP-4000X ?
Should I buy one ? Or should I buy another product ?
What should I buy ?
I read something on this forum about building a sony-unilink-car-mp3 player. Any
news on that ?
Hope to hear something about it.
Kind regards,

I've been after the 'audiophile' ride myself and have never had rear fill.
I currently am running a tri-amped system to the front sound stage
(haven't decided how to do the amp/subs yet). I also tried using the
passive crossover but found triamping gave the mids and tweets much more
ooomph and clarity while the driver stayed a little tighter.
Dynaudio System 340 with tweets and mids driven by ADS PQ10 4x40w and the
7" driver by an ADS PQ20 bridged for 2x160w.
I've been playing around with speaker placement for some time, and here
are my general impressions. The 7" driver has always been in the door (92
Camry). I've not tinkered with time delay during the speaker placement
tests to try and keep the variables to a minimum.
Tweets/Mids in kicks (homemade MDF baffle) - wonderful 'blend' of overall
sound, lack of depth and height of soundstage. very different sound when
someone is riding shotgun. when windows are down, muffled.
Tweets Apillar, mids in kicks - Depth and height of soundstage
unbelievable. mids and tweets don't blend as well. tweets got a little
bright even after dialing gain on amp all the way down (did no 4000 work
to compensate). when windows down, maintains soundstage nicely.
tweets apillar, mids on air vents (stationary tests) - again wonderful
depth and height of soundstage, mids blend much better. this way had
incredible presence and slam. couldn't believe I was in a car.
I think the ideal is to do the tweets and mids up high and put the driver
in a sealed/ported kick. I am not going to try and cusomize the dash
(though that would be the ideal) so I am thinking of cutting up the doors
for the tweets/mids to get them up. Though I am concerned about being so
close to the left speakers in this arrangement.

I feel ya dawg
Interesting about the subs. I haven't decided what I want to do, but it
seems we're after the same thing. 4 10's is impractical for me, but do
you think 2 10's would be flatter than a single 10/12/15 sub? Obviously
you can't speak for my car, but wanted your general impression.
I've had a single JL12 in the past and found it very difficult to 'make it
disappear'. I am hoping that the front drivers in a proper enclosure up
front will help.
If you ditch your rear fill don't be suprised if all of a sudden you hear
your subs. I'd imagine right now your ride has a rather engulfing sound.
With just the fronts running I think it will be much more difficult to
keep the whole soundstage up front.

Someone else who appreciates the A/D/S amps as do i...... Currently i have
running a PQ 20 and a PH 15. I have another PQ 20 also going in..... Focal TN
51 tweets, Focal 4k (from mistral line) mids, and the focal 7K (also from the
mistral line). I will be redoing this soon..... I also got a set of the
Vifa's..... building fiberglass door panels as well.... Perhaps a set of Audiom
6W
mids from Focal.... And the TN 51 tweets..... should be very nice :)

Buy one. With the recent firmware modifications to more directly support
the C90 and 4k, the Phatbox is a swell device. I am working on a Linux
driver to support the Unilink over the parallel port with the thought of
developing a Linux-based MP3 changer, but that's just a dream right now and
mostly a project for my spare time.
I can highly recommend the Phatbox.
