the CDX-C90 has not been discontinued in japan it is still a option to consumers.
just as the reference speakers are still avail in european countries. The decision
to discontinue the CDX-C90 and the XDP-4000x in the US was most likely
due to poor sales. The car audiophile market is most likely a small niche market
at best. Most people would rather spend that kind of money on nice home system
then put it into a car. here is the link to the C90 (scroll to the bottom)
and a really cool navigation (on its own page) unit that sony has developed:
http://www.sony.jp/products/me/contents/caraudio/1din.html
As for the 4000x that definitely has disappeared from the market with the introduction
Xplod's EQ7 and DSO features.

I think as far a Sony is concerned, the XDP4000x and
C-90 are just a peice of their history - they have
moved on LONG ago and forgotten about "us" - the
mobile audiophiles. We are stuck with what we have -
well Phatbox has gratiously added ONE option for us,
but nothing new will happen to this top-notch set-up.
Oh well, once these units get old and start to have
major problems, I will just go to Alpine's F-1 since
Sony doesn't support our kind of products anymore. Do
they miss us? Not for a second...Xplod is probably
much more profitable for them.

if I got a seperate amp for the tweeters would I gain anything by not using the
supplied crossover for the components?? does anyone use the crossover that comes
with their components with the 4000x? what type of speakers should I conside
for my rear?

If you want to keep the full digital domain crossover (which would be
better) then I think you would be better off getting another amp to bi-amp
the front components. An XM-7527 (I THINK that is the model #) would be a
perfect match. Same amp design just in the two channel model.

As for the PhatBox, as far as I thought it was a hard drive, not a disc
player. Therefore it wouldn't support DVDs as it has no disc drive in it!
I don't think it will ever support DVDs unless they make a new unit with a
DVD drive in it and a video output. I think this is beyond what the PhatBox
people are looking to do. They just want to make HDDs that store MP3s
pretty much, not DVD players.

Has anyone had a chance to listen to these?? what do you think of them?? I have
a chance to get a set but am wondering if they are worth the money. I definitely
can not afford the tweeters that is for sure

As I understand, by skipping any passive crossovers inline with your front
components, you should gain about +6 db of headroom in your music. I cannot
back this up, this is just something I heard, I actually use passive
crossovers, since I only run a 3 way system. Honestly I'm happy with what
I'm using, but am curious about what the sound difference would be.
Anyways, if possible, I would suggest not using the crossovers that came
with your components, just use the 4000x. The only reason I don't is
because my amps are too large to all fit, I just ran out of room.

i think you have some flexability in using the 4kx , if it doesn work well
for you , you can allways go back to the passives

Yup - that is correct.
This happens because the higher frequencies actually
"Ride On Top" of the larger low frequency waveforms.
So, you have a 100Hz sine at 50 Watts, and as it
reaches the peak of it's wave, add another equal
amplitude sine at say 5KHz, the 5KHz sine will peak
ABOVE the 100Hz's peak since it is being "Added" to
it.
Once you actively filter the signal and present the
amp with a limited bandwidth signal, it can produce
this dedicated range of frequencies louder, and with
more control since there are no passive L/C components
to hinder damping factor at the amp's outputs.
Passive L/C networks also cause phase issues that the
XDP will avoid if used to its potential.
Even just bi-amping through my XM-7547 and it's analog
then adding the XDP-4000x and using it's digital
crossover and time correction made it down-right
jaw-dropping!
Do away with those passive crossovers, and BI-AMP.
You get more volume, better damping factor -
especially on the tweeter, and a time aligned front
stage. A no-brainer in my book.
If you don't like the XDP-s crossover selection, use
the analog crossover in the amp (most amps have one or
more) to tweak the frequency to your liking. You can
still use the XDP's time correction as long as you
bypass the XDP-s crossover by setting the "Slope" to
"0" which bypasses it, and assuming your amp has
dedicated inputs with a crossover on each to allow 4
inputs and a HP/LP crossover.
You won't be disappointed, but it does take a bit of
tweaking on the delays to achieve bliss.
