It stopped tracking CD's. The solution to this is to buy a CD changer (If anyone has one for sale, please let me know). This got me thinking. I personally NEVER listen to the radio. In fact, the antenna isn't even hooked up to my head unit. From what I understand, when we have the 4000X hooked up to our head units, it disables the head unit's pre-amp and becomes the new pre-amp. Since I am not using the head units CD player or radio, the only thing it is good for is displaying the information and the use of certain buttons. I had an interesting idea that is beyond the scope of my abilities, but may not be for some here. My question to you is, can you easily take the face plate, the circuitry in the head unit that controls it, and the output to the processor and remove that from the head unit's enclosure? That way we could do away with the head unit completely and mount the faceplate somewhere else in a much more compact location. Controls would still function on it, but also the wired and wireless remotes would be still hopefully useful. In fact with using the remotes, you would possibly only need the display itself. If this is easily possible, could someone describe how to do this to me? If this works, I think it would be of benifit to many of us. I will understand if this isn't something easily done. You could always replace the pickup--I think a unit in the C880 era/class has a pickup that is between $60-$75. If you don't know or have equipment to install and calibrate it though, it may not be worth the bother. It is probably still covered under Sony's flat-rate ($125 US) repair program but you could probably get a used one for less than that. That said, your idea about relocating the faceplate and related electronics has been done before! I've seen someone who took a Pioneer unit and relocated the FP to his rearview mirror! However he had to leave the HU in place (but he did still use it to load CDs and for the radio though). He merely did some extending of the connections of the ribbon cable/faceplate connector via some careful wiring and then mounted took the faceplate out of its casing and mounted it within the rearview mirror. I suppose you could strip some of the additional electronics you didn't need, like the tuner "front-end" and CD drive/pickup/loading assembly. Most of the main circuit board (which likely includes the internal amps) would have to be kept intact though. I'd say you'd probably be able to get away with stripping everything but the main board (which should include the power supply I think) and display inverter, and of course the faceplate itself. You would definitely want a service manual for the unit though to make sure you aren't taking out any vital components. It isn't EASILY done but it isn't overly difficult either. It just takes some electronics/electrical knowhow and possibly construction of a housing and location to put the faceplate electronics and a place to safely hide the mainboard electronics. It isn't something I'd personally care to do, but yes it is very possible to perform this "mod" to your HU. Roland M. However I'm sure using the screws does a fine job anyway. The later versions of the wired remote included not only the small double-sided foam tape but also included a strange looking rather large patch of rubber (with double sided tape) that was PART OF (attached to) the mounting base rubber covering. Anyone that has this later remote will know what I am talking about... Anyhow if the original "question asker" is still looking for double sided tape you can use a variety of 3M products that would work. One is the 3M "mounting squares" that are a double sided foam tape which comes in squares (I've seen this in Canada at Staples/Business Depot) they are rated to hold up to 2lbs I think. The others are 3M "Command" adhesive strips which are rated to hold more weight but have a thinner foam in between the sticky sides. Also 3M has what they call "outdoor mounting tape" which comes in a roll and looks quite rugged. It has a red peel-away and grey foam. The latter two products I've seen at Home Depot, by the way. In any case, however, I would recommend using the screws. So really I'd say you could use the screws all by themselves or both the screws and the foam tape. But I wouldn't go with just the tape because I'm willing to bet it would just come off after time/use. Thanks. I bought it about 5 years ago, and it has been a good head unit. It's kinda a cross between the 910 and 90 in that it had some features the 90 later included. I don't know if it would help, but you can check out my install here: http://www.sounddomain.com/member_pages/view_page.pl?page_id=304268 "You could always replace the pickup--I think a unit in the C880 era/class has a pickup that is between $60-$75. If you don't know or have equipment to install and calibrate it though, it may not be worth the bother." Getting to the CD part is real simple. I noticed it just plugs into the main board fairly easy. But calibrating it wouldn't be something I could do. I thought about trying to find someone who has this head unit (or similar if it would work) that has lost their face plate, and instead bought a new head unit. That means they have the part I need. If it isn't the same model number, then I could possibly take out the CD player portion on it and put it into my head unit. But trying to find one might be very difficult. Do you know if other models CD portion will work in my case? Also, I know of a place that might sell just the CD section. It is pacparts.com or Pacific Coast Parts. But I don't know what the part is that I would need. Anyone know what it would be? "It is probably still covered under Sony's flat-rate ($125 US) repair program but you could probably get a used one for less than that." Yeah, after shipping it probably wouldn't be worth it. But it may. Thanks for the suggestion. "That said, your idea about relocating the faceplate and related electronics has been done before! Yeah, I have seen that done before as well, and contimplated doing it myself. What I am thinking now would be more extreme. I wanted to pretty much eliminate the head unit totally. Since the processor is the pre-amp, remotes control it, changer is the CD player, all that is left is a very large (volume) display. If I could just mount the face plate and not worry about the other stuff, then that would be awesome. I was even thinking of maybe using a LCD screen as the display if that is possible. Does anyone here know? "You would definitely want a service manual for the unit though to make sure you aren't taking out any vital components." I just noticed one listed at that Pacific Coast Parts place. If you know of another place to get one, please let me know.
