Subject: Sony's XA-118 spotted at Crutchfield!
--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "Roland M" <mdx400@hotmail.com> I dunno if anyone has seen this yet, but I happened to stumble upon Sony's XA-118 while searching for something else at Crutchfield. The price is about $200 US though! For anyone that is wondering, the XA-118 is the box that allows the Sony DVX-100 DVD Changer to be "transformed" into a UniLink device (i.e. It allows the DVD changer to be controlled by a UniLink capable HU). Unfortunately, Crutchfield doesn't give their usual "Detailed Information" page on this item so it says little other than this device allows you to bypass using the display and FM modulator that are included with the DVX-100 and instead use your HU. What information and control you get over the changer and any model incompatibilities remains a mystery. Though I would assume any fairly recent HU (including the C90) would be able to make full use of this thing. If anyone thought the XA-300 was expensive at $100, then you'll be thinking this is ridiculous at $200! $200 extra to add UniLink is a bit much! Look at the size of this thing--it is TINY! Roland M. --> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "Eli A." <ea62@msn.com> The last time I talked to the Sony techs about that unit, he kept me on the phone while he went and gota DVX-100 changer,a XA-118 and a C90 headunit. I had called before and he told me to called back a little later cause he needed some time to get the his hands on those units to plug them all into each other. While he was plugging and connecting away I whined about Mobile ES (R.I.P.) dissappearing, he said everyone in dept. feels my pain. When he got it all hooked up he said the C90 recongnized the changer as being a CD Changer unit but it didn't display DVD as source because of the fact of old Unilink (C90) vs. new Unilink (DVX). When the C90 came out, there were obviously no DVX's out yet, so it see's it as a CD changer cause that's what it recognizes as it being. There might be some combatibility issues with any older than the C90 as far as connecting DVX's units to heads . He said that the Track Up Down functions worked fine. He didn't have a video mo nitor handy to see what was displayed on the screen. He didn't tell me what the menu feature on the C90 brought up either, we were runnimg a short on time. Get the 91 it will provide optical to the xdp and you can still name the disc. The 727 does have CD-TEXT which the 91 lacks but other than that the 91 is better quality, especially because of the digital output. Then again, if you add two changers, it becomes difficult to add two optical changers without a (very RARE) XA-U40D anyhow.. A quick run-down of the later model changers with optical out (if you're looking for one): The CDX-828 is the exact same thing as the 727 but has the optical output. Also the CDX-838 is the same as the 828 but is in red Xplod colours instead of silver. The CDX-848X has a "Transformers"-like loud design and is very similar. I *THINK* the 848X may support CD-RW (but no MP3) but I'm not sure... Also there was the CDX-805 which came before the CDX-828. The 805 has CD-TEXT as well. The main difference between the 805 and the 828 is the window that is on the door of the 828 and the fact that the 828 has Advanced ESP as opposed to ESP on the 805.
