I'm getting close to installing my C90/XDP4K in the next couple of months myself and have determined the first obstacle to proper usage of the 4K. a laptop. I'm sending a call out to those who have info regarding what laptops they use to run/program the unit, and which ones are more user-friendly for doing so. I'm beginning to get in the market for a laptop, and I know that it has to have a dedicated built-in serial port, so I guess I'm just taking a consensus of what everyone else uses. Anyone who could provide info about this, along with pros/cons for what you use could be very helpful in determining what to get down the road. Thanks in advance. ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 05:52:17 AM PST US From: "Bobby Braun" Subject: Re: XDP4000X-List: List of good laptops to use for the 4K? --> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "Bobby Braun" I personally use a Compaq 2100US, and have never had any connection or compatibility issues others have spoke of. However, if I would be able to do it over again, I'd scrap the Compaq and go through Gateway or Dell. Compaq has sh#t for customer service, and my DVD/CD Burner Drive has done nothing but make bad cd's since I've gotten it, and their answer to my issue was for me to "format the computer and re-install windows, then if it still doesn't work, call us". I have an old Gateway (which by the way has never burned a coaster like my compaq) that in the past had a video card issue after it was four years old. I called up Gateway and within a few minutes a new video card was on it's way, an even better one than I had from the beginning, and all at no cost to me. They take care of their people, Compaq makes you sit on hold for an hour, and then you have to try to discern what some newly nationalized Arab is trying to ask or tell you to do over the phone. That is my opinion, I can't tell you how much I don't recommend going to your local Best Buy or electronics store to get a computer. The parts are all inferior and the warranty, if the company is willing to back it up, only lasts a year without paying $100's extra. I made that mistake for the last time. Tricked-out, kitted and pulsing with power, 13 Sony Xplod product- equipped cars that embody the combined strength of two industry leaders will be on display in the APC booth at the Specialty Equipment Market Association's (SEMA) annual trade show. Built to reflect the lifestyles and interests of young after-market performance and automotive enthusiasts, the vehicles are outfitted with everything from neons, rims and racing seats to full in-car video entertainment systems and rows of booming subwoofers. "Sony and APC join together elements of excitement from both the specialty equipment and mobile electronics industries to bring 12-volt up to what's hot today and what will be hot tomorrow," said Bill Lee, general manager for mobile electronics at Sony Electronics. "The show cars symbolize this trend and serve as examples of what a truly complete after-market experience can be." "Our in-depth understanding of our customers and the attention-getting aftermarket parts and accessories we provide them have made APC the industry leader in just four years," said Brian Horowitz, President and founder, American Products Company. "Of course we would want to join forces with the number one entertainment brand in the world--now, what enthusiasts have only just imagined can be realized." WHAT KIND OF ICE ARE YOU ROLLIN', DUDE? The XplMd /APC show cars are an album of Gen Y- approved import and American tuner vehicles stocked with a total of more than 13,000 heart-stopping watts of RMS power and the fiercest entertainment systems on the market. From the Pontiac Sunfire to the Toyota Celica they represent a breadth of customization and style. Cutting edge MP3 devotees will appreciate Sony's CDX-M850MP and CDX-M3DI receivers that play back MP3-encoded CD-R/RW discs. The CDX-M850MP head unit is both a beauty and beast with its smooth fluorescent full-motion active black panel display and intense, sound-enhancing features such as the four-volt preamp output and DSO, Sony's proprietary dynamic soundstage organizer. Ground-shaking bass and the muscle for louder output and full performance sound are achieved in the APC show cars with the XplMd five-sided P5 series of amps and subs. A total of 20 amplifiers (D mono class and multi-channel) and 35 subwoofers provide optimal power combined with killer cosmetics and appeal to the most discriminating db addict. And since no joy ride would be complete without in-car video, the APC show vehicles are also equipped with the industry's coolest DVD players and TFT monitors. Head rests become movie theaters with the XVM-H65 flush mount LCD color monitor, which has a 6.5-inch screen and the ability to connect to a DVD player or video game console. Video sources include the Sony DVX-11A DVD/CD player that can be installed in-dash, under the seat or in the middle console along with the DVX-100 10-disc DVD/CD player with RF modulator for easy connection to any FM tuner. The XAV-7W A/V Center has a 7-inch motorized monitor that does double duty as system information center to display CD or radio settings and as a video monitor for enjoying DVDs. --------------------------------- ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 01:37:29 PM PST US From: Randy Visentine Subject: Re: XDP4000X-List: List of good laptops to use for the 4K? --> XDP4000X-List message posted by: Randy Visentine I didn't have a laptop, so I bought a CHEAP windows 98 Compaq w/serial port online for $125! It works better than the old Compaq Pentium 75 Mhz. with 32 mb and windows 98... The 333 is fast enough...and Windows 2000 (with all service packs and updates) is very stable... Be sure to get a good battery with it, because you will find yourself spending a lot of time with the XDP4000 and your laptop...
