Subject: Re: Phatnoise Connection Problem - Help?!
--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: bobbybraun@comcast.net Well, I contacted Phatnoise about my problem and at first they said that since I'm using an external processer in my system they can't guarantee that the Phatbox will work with my system. After I clarified that I know that there are people who have had perfect success with using a Phatbox in a specific setup like mine I was told they could replace the cable, but I have to show proof of ownership. They want me to take a digital photo of the bottom of my Phatbox and email it to them, which if I do that they'll realize that mine isn't originally a Sony unit... Once they realize that there's no way they'll offer any assistance. So, is there anyone out there with a real Sony PB willing to snap a photo for me or maybe even purchase a cable from them and send to me and I'll Paypal the $$? I know it's alot to ask but I figure it's worth a try... I did hear back from the person who put this all together for me, and he's willing to check the cable, but looking at how well he did the splice I don't know if this is any fault of his wiring aside from not knowing the correct way to do it. So I do still have this as an option, but I'm doubtful if it will even be worth the hassle. -------------- Original message -------------- From: dralle@matronics.com (Matt Dralle) > --> XDP4000X-List message posted by: dralle@matronics.com (Matt Dralle) > > >-------------- > >--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: bobbybraun@comcast.net > > > >Ok, I just received and connected my modified Phatbox to my system, > >however upon connection it seems as if my 4000x disappears. Once they realize that there's no way >they'll offer any assistance. > LOL! That's an awful lot of "security" for just trying to buy a cable. I don't get why they would do that. I guess they have to "protect" their overpriced and outdated products somehow, lol. Kenwood (who originally used Phatnoise products for their Music Keg as we all know) and JVC are both already making HUs with USB Mass-Storage control built in; meaning you can just use a USB flash drive or an external HDD case (be it 1.8", 2.5" or 3.5") and connect it directly to the HU. This of course doesn't help you trying to use your current setup but it's only a matter of time before products like the Phatbox are largely forgotten. Now it was never a bad product, I'm not saying that (in fact it is pretty good for what it does) but for it's pricetag (unless you're getting one of the refurb Music Kegs, etc which are okay priced) and because of the fact that you can do the same thing without one now it's pretty much over for it, lol. Personally I don't really like the idea of making things proprietary, *just* so you have to buy things from that company and for no other reason. And I'm pretty sure no one else likes that either--it's no wonder that their proprietary HDD format and other things about the box are being "hacked". For example, if they were using some kind of special storage medium or HDD type that would be fine, but we all know they're just using regular HDDs and instead of letting people just use their own regular HDDs they use some proprietary firmware BS so they can sell you a $100 drive for $400  Someone hacks it and then they get mad because they can't gouge people (as much) anymore. I'm not sure what the max. capacity of the Kenwood and JVC units with the USB feature is, but I'm sure even if it isn't large it won't be long before features like that handle at least 200GB (if they can't already) and every manufacturer starts to offer it. That'll teach Phatnoise a lesson, LOL. I'm not really against Phatnoise and the Phatbox or anything... I'm sure it works wonderfully and is an excellent product (as other list users including Matt have noted). But just stupid tactics like this make me dislike their business practices. Really they should be trying to sell you that cable to get any money they still can out of the Phatbox, LOL. I mean I'm surprised they don't try to charge you $100 for the cable or something (but hey you didn't mention the price yet haha)... Well anyway I hope you can get that silly picture they're requesting, from someone on the list... At least they aren't asking you to put your Driver's License in the pic to confirm it's you and your phatbox or something, LOL! Roland M.

We cannot guarantee that the PhatBox will work through the unilink adapter. Best regards, PhatNoise Customer Support As far as a cable price, I have no idea what they're asking, but at this point $100 doesn't seem that far out of line when comparing the pricing of their product line. And the really sad thing is, at this point after having spent all the money on the unit itself, I would even pay it if it would mean that I could finally use the thing! Yes, I hope someone out there can help me out here, but I also understand that there's a fine line between asking for a hand and then asking for too much, so we'll see... -------------- Original message -------------- From: "Roland M" <mdx400@hotmail.com> > --> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "Roland M" > > >--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: bobbybraun@comcast.net > > > >I was told they could replace the cable, but I have to show proof of > >ownership. --> XDP4000X-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com> Okay, here's some help on this cable issue. Below are two links to some information on how the Phatbox-Sony cables are wired. Note that you *will need* the 4.7k ohm resistor between ground and the blue wire. Note the color coding and what not might be different depending on the version of cable you have. The links are for reference only and you might find you need to interpolate a little with respect to colors and pin numbers and what not: What Matt Found on his cable: http://www.matronics.com/xdp4000x/Unilink-To-Phatbox-Cable-Rev1.pdf What Phatbox Said: http://www.matronics.com/xdp4000x/SonyCable5.pdf Depending on what version of cable you have, things might be a little different. Use the drawing that matches best your installation. Are you using version 7.0 Sony firmware on your Phatbox? If you are using anything else, you are going to have operational issues with the xdp-4000x. Make sure you're using 7.0 Sony firmware (upgradeable through PhatManager). Matt Dralle For reference, here is a message from Mike Woo at Phatnoise way back when: "We changed cable manufacturers since Matt purchased his system. The connections are the same but the colors are different. You want to connect a 10k resistor between the blue (bus master) and orange (ground) wires. I have attached a PDF with a detailed description of the connections (SonyCable5.pdf). The numbers can not be seen on the Sony connector. They can be seen on the PhatBox connector. An unmodified cable should work when directly connected to a head unit. Firmware 5.00 and an unmodified cable works with simple multi-device configurations. I'm not sure if firmware 6.00 and an unmodified cable will work with any multi-device configurations. The problem is with the bus master signal. It is an input. It is used for arbitration during device initialization. Without the pull-down the signal stays high (+5V) at all times. Thus the PhatBox has trouble knowing when is the right time to initialize itself. After the PhatBox is connected, it will boot and then shutdown. The PhatBox should then force a reset after a few seconds. However, you should listen to Matt regarding pushing reset. He would know best about using the C90.
