Those pcm-to-toslink converters run on 5v internally. The 6-9v ac adapter that
comes with it supplies the 7805 regulator on the board. Likely you could have
just powered the converter right off of 5v or worst case just bypassed the 7805
regulator on the converter.
In anycase, finding a XA-D210 is an even better option! :-)
