I had to use a windows 98 SE operating system. There is a driver issue
and I do believe you can get it to work on newer operating systems but
what the driver you need is I do not know.

No, you really do need a null-modem cable, *not* just a cable that has a female
DB9 on each end. Looks like these cables are still available from Belkin:

              http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Product_Id=16633

This is the exact cable I have and it works great.

Do you have another computer you can try it on? XP should work fine. I've heard
of only one fellow that had a RS232 port burned out on the 4x. But generally,
the RS232 port on the 4k is pretty robust. I would try it from a different
      computer.

drivers the the serial port and it still does not work. I have tried the matronics
software and the original DSC software uninstalled re-installed still nothing.
I have been speaking to another user of the xdp-4000x and he is leading
me to believe The whole "Null" cable thing is BS and he uses a plain old RS232
Db9 serial cable without any issues. Now is it possible I am having an issue
with the actual connection on the XDP-4000x ?? Any help would be appreciated.
