Hi Bruno,
Yeah, the XA-U40D was pretty hard to find back in the day.- Now they're a
lmost impossible to come across.- When I did the install in my Corvette,
I didn't know they made an XA-U40D, but I had three CDX-838 changers and wa
nted to use the optical output.- My problem was compounded by the fact th
at I also had two XDP-4000X processors so I needed to combine the three out
puts and split them back out into two active links.- On the LED-based TOS
LINK fiber drivers, the light output is pretty low to begin with.- Buildi
ng an array of passive combiners just didn't work.- There wasn't enough l
ight left to drive the XDP-4000X reliably.
So, I designed an active combiner/splitter circuit and put the whole thing
in a nice project box.- I used a standard XA-30 for the bus switching, th
en interconnected all of the fiber optics links using the combiner/splitter
.- After 8 years, the system is still working great.- I really love the
sound quality of the C90/XDP-4000X.- I just wish the display was brighte
r on the C90.- I've got no plans to upgrade the system in the Car or the
Truck; still extremely pleased with the performance.
I've attached a PDF of the splitter/combiner circuit, some photos of the ci
rcuit board and enclosure I made, and then a couple shots of the finished p
roduct for fun.
Best regards,
Matt Dralle

Try going into device manager to make sure that the COM port of your USB ad
apter to one in the range of 1-3. The 4000x accepts communications on COMM
1-4, but I've personally never had any luck using 4 so I recommend stickin
g to 1-3.
Before you start, make sure your USB>Serial Adapter is connected and recogn
ized by Windows. Also try to have as few other peripherals connected to yo
ur computer as possible, as they might occupy the COM Port you need. Next,
right click the My Computer icon and select properties, click on the Hardw
are tab, and select Device Manager. From there find your USB>Serial Adapte
r, highlight it and select properties. Search through the menus and you'll
likely find that the default COM port assigned to your device is set way t
oo high as is often the case with mine. Reset it to the lowest available C
OM port (1-3), and retry communications with your 4000x. If you don't have
a lower port # available, you'll have to reassign one of the devices that
is using the space to a different port first, or you'll have a conflict. B
est of luck!
Bobby
