Hi everyone, I need to change the oil on my new-to-me CJ-6A this
weekend. It will be my first time doing this
and of course I have forgotten where all of the screens/drains are...
(sorry, Brian-- I should have shot some video of the systems part of
my checkout!)
Can someone enlighten me as to the proper procedure? Any special
techniques/tricks?
Thanks-

That is not a bad idea.

The airplane has spent its whole life (since engine rebuild) using
Phillips 20W50 and then later 25W60 oil. I would stick with it.
1. Fly the airplane to get the oil up to temperature.
2. Pull the bottom cowling off.
3. Drain the oil tank first by pulling the drain plug on the oil screen
at the lower right side of the firewall.
4. When the oil is done draining remove the safety wire from the wing
nut and drop out the oil screen. It is very unlikely that there will be
anything in this screen but examine it anyway.
5. Put the oil screen and oil drain plug back in and safety wire them.
6. Pull the oil sump screen at the bottom front of the engine. That is
the very large aluminum castelated "nut" held in by a safety-wired
spring clip. A quart or two of warm oil will come gushing out there so
be ready with your bucket.
7. Examine this screen very carefully. If the engine is sick and
making metal, this is where you will find it. This is the first screen
the oil encounters on its way out of the engine. Broken bits end up
here. If you find *anything* beyond very small, black carbon flecks,
get an A&P to look it over with you.
8. Reinstall the oil screen and tighten to about 40 foot*pounds. Put
the spring clip in place and use safety wire over the spring clip to
ensure it stays in place. Having your oil sump screen depart the engine
in-flight can ruin your whole day.
9. Drain the oil out of the oil cooler. You will find that in the
fuselage near where the right wing joins the fuselage, just forward of
the oil cooler air exhaust. It is one of those dzeus-fastener-closed
bumps abeam the fuel drain. (You are remembering to drain the fuel
before flight, right?)
10. Put everything back together and inspect your safety wiring again.
11. Solvent wash everything. If you can't do that use Gunk or other
spray-on cleaner and hose everything off carefully. Blow it dry with
shop air.
11. Ask your friendly A&P whom you have been regularly plying with
gifts and the occasional beer after work to look everything over for you.
12. Start the engine and let is run for about 30 seconds *AFTER* oil
pressure comes up. Shut down.
13. Reinspect everything. You washed the engine so that *any* oil
leaks will be visible. Pay special attention to everything you opened up.
14. Go buy your A&P another beer to say thank you for helping out.

This doesn't have anything to do with the oily bird catching the worm,
does it?

A 4' section of PVC rain gutter slips nicely under the sump drain, above the
air filter, and will exactly reach down into an empty 5 gal. bucket. No
muss, no fuss & if you select the color white (camo not available at this
time) you can actually watch all the metal pieces roll down the chute on
their way to the bucket!

Thanks for the replies!
Isn't there also an oil screen somewhere on the oil pump on the rear of
the engine?
And I thought I had heard about a propellor governor channel screen?
Do I need to worry about these?

Just one more screen to clean, its at the oil pump, it's a finger screen and
is just as the oil enters the pump. Look just above the fuel pump for a
large 1 1/2' nut safetyed on, like Brian said look for forghin matter and
clean with solvent, wing solvent works well, (100 Octane) . I place a piece
of old carpet under the engine when I drain the oil, catches stuff that the
bucket didn't.
Have fun Dave.

There is a screen there but it comes after the screen at the output of
the tank so there is no real reason to pull that screen every time. If
there was something in the tank it will stop at the screen on the
firewall. If it gets past that it will also get past the screen at the
input of the oil pump.
I don't pull this screen with every oil change. I consider it to be a
"check at annual" screen.
> And I thought I had heard about a propellor governor channel screen?
There is a small one there too. It is on the right side of the
reduction gear housing as I recall without looking at the engine. (You
obviously didn't forget too much if you remember that screen being
there.) Again, this only needs to be inspected periodically and not
necessarily with every oil change.
> Do I need to worry about these?
I treat these two screens as "check at annual" items.

Dear Listers,
First let me say Thank You to everyone that made a Contribution in support
of the Lists this year! I was particularly touched by all of the wonderful
comments people made regarding the Lists and how much they mean to
them. As I have said many times before, running these Lists and creating
the many new features is truly a labor of love. This is why your comments
of support and appreciation have particular meaning for me. Your
generosity during this time of List support only underscores the delightful
sentiments people have made regarding the Lists.
The money raised during this year's Fund Raiser will go directly into
supporting the continued operation of the Lists as well as some much needed
upgrades. For example, I have just ordered three new UPS systems to
replaced the currently failing and out-of-warranty older units. These new
units will provide well over 3 hours of backup protection during an outage
and assure that the computer systems will be shutdown in a safe and orderly
fashion. I have also ordered a new backup system that will provide 60 days
of on line, daily backups for all of systems supporting the List
services. This regular backup capability serves to rigorously protect
against the inevitable system disk failure or the (not-so) "unlikely"
errant event of the rogue "rm *" command...(!) Last year, using resources
generated by the Fund Raiser, I was able to upgrade the Web server
platform, greatly enhancing the performance of the many services such as
the Archive Search Engine, as well as increasing the system reliability
through newer equipment. During the upcoming year, using Contributions
from this year's Fund Raiser, I hope to upgrade the Email System in a
similar fashion, providing Listers with substantial increases in
performance and availability. Know that all of these enhancements are
remotely feasible ONLY because of your generosity during the List Fund
Raiser. For this, both I, and the rest of the List population thank you!
I would also once again like to thank Andy Gold of the Builder's Bookstore
( http://www.buildersbooks.com ) who so generously supported this year's
Fund Raiser with both free and substantially discounted merchandise!! Andy
is truly one of a kind, and a superb businessman, and I cannot thank him
enough for all that he's done! If you have any aircraft media needs in the
near future, I would ask that you please give his great web site a
look. Thanks again Andy, for all your support!
And finally, below you will find the 2002 List of Contributors current as
of 12/3/02! Have a look at the list of names there as these are the people
that make all of the services here possible! I can't thank you all enough
for your support and great feedback during this year's Fund Raiser! THANK YOU!
I will post a follow up List of Contributors at the end of the month to
catch any straggles or people who mailed in checks. There are still a few
of the various Free Gifts left, so please feel free to yet make your
Contribution and get a great Free Gift to-boot! Once again, the URL for
the Contributions web site is:
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
I will be shipping out the CDROM-Only orders later this week. The
remaining Flight Bag-Only and all of the Flight Bag & CDROM orders will
ship out as soon as I receive the second shipment of flight bags. The A&P
Book orders will go out later this month. I will post again regarding the
actual shipment of the various items.
Once again, thank you for making this year's List Fund Raiser successful!
Best regards,
Matt Dralle
