The attached email is a Chinese symbol on the back of my CJ. I understand it
for the august 1 1927 peasant uprising and the start of the Chinese
military. any one have any further info. is this also called the autumn
harvest uprising?

Ah, the Bei Yei, much more than a symbol. While the propagandists mark
the anniversary of the peasant uprising as the beginning of the Commie
party, the PLAAF adopted it to mark the founding of the air force, which
also begin August First. No coincidence. The "August First" flyers put
up demo teams at all the Chinese airshows...there are no private shows.
The Autumn Uprising was quickly put down, it was really about not getting
enough to eat, not politics. To their credit, the commies understood that
a lot of loyalty could be gained from the promise of a full belly.
I would love to know more about PLAAF history and traditions; I heard from
a Special Ops guy I knew, that soon after Nixon's 1st visit a small US
military team was allowed to tour and viewed some of those airshows. While
they were interested in what serious threat aircraft the Chinese might be
working on, they could not help but notice a 200-ship formation of CJ-6A's
that performed a line abreast loop! Some of the US delegation got rides
in one 15 years before the first CJ's were imported into the US.

Guys,
I purchased the Desser 400x150 tire and tube. Firstly the tire is a bit
smaller in diameter and width, secondly the tube just wont work, the valve
stem leaves the tube at 90 degree angle, then makes a 90 degree turn away
from the tube and proceeds into a 180 and then a 90. Basically it makes a
question mark shape coming out of the tube. This bend interferes with the
hub making it impossible to pass it through the valve stem guide in the hub.
So I ended up using my old tube.
Also the tire states a MAX pressure of 30 PSI. I had to inflate it right up
to the 30 PSI limit in order for the tire to not look under inflated. I
flew with the tire and it works just fine, did several landings, and nothing
looks out of the ordinary. I just wasnt too comfortable with inflating a
tire to its max.
Is this normal??

Subject: | Obsolete cylinders on M-14P/PF engines? |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Coffey, John" <john.coffey@attws.com>
Yak-Meisters,
I've recently come across a Romanian 400hp M-14PF which was advertised as "new"
which possesses jugs manufactured to an apparently obsolete design dating from
at least 10-15 years ago.
From what I now understand, whether a particular M-14P jug is of the earlier obsolete
design or not can be determined by a simple visual inspection of the exterior
of the cylinder-head cooling fins.
If the cylinder-head cooling fins all rise to the SAME HEIGHT, this denotes the
now obsolete 1st generation jug design that was superceded at least 10-15 years
ago by the current design in which the cylinder-head cooling fins ALTERNATE
in height high/low/high/low etc. This high/low/high/low alternation in cooling
fin height is OBVIOUS when you look at the front side of the cylinder head.
I don't know the reason that the alternating cooling fin height was incorporated
into the later design, but my ASSUMPTION is that this change was made for a
beneficial reason---otherwise, why change the design? This leads me to the CONCLUSION
that the use of cylinders of the obsolete design on engines sold as "new"
is probably NOT a good thing.
QUESTIONS:
- Can anyone explain why these apparently obsolete cylinders may appear on M-14P/PF
engines advertised as "new" rather than cylinders of current design?
- Also, does anyone care to explain why this situation shouldn't be of concern
to all current & future M-14P/PF purchasers?
It may not matter to you, but if you've got an M-14P or PF, or are thinking of
buying one, you may want to check which type of cylinder heads are mounted and
make your own inquiries.
Regards,
John Coffey

Ernie,
You experience the exact same problem us YAK 52 have. The Desser inner
tubes are basically unusable. Mark Jefferies (mark@yakuk.com) has the
Russian inner tubes and will be glad to ship them over. I had my first set
of Desser tires recapped and the recaps have significantly more tread and
thus will last longer, particularly if you're flying off hard surface
runways.

Maybe the PF engine needs bigger fins for more cooling because of the higher
horse power ?

Thanks, but I'm hoping for explanations, not guesses.
It's not a question of bigger vs. smaller fins.
It's a question of obsolete vs. current cylinder head designs.

Checkout my tundra tires they are readily available here and I have had no
problem. I will post details if anyone is interested. They are US made and I
have not had to get any new ones yet but I am told they are easy to come by.

Hi, there. Don't know your name.

No problem I have thick skin. I just thought that maybe the 400 hp might
require additional cooling. I have a 400 hp Yak 52 shipping from Europe on
Dec. 9th thus I have no first hand knowledge of anything but just some wild
ass guesses. My questions will be coming shortly when I take delivery in late
Jan. or early Feb.
I am sorry I forgot to sign my name.

on September 9 1927 in Jiang xi too. Chinese Air force day is October 11

oh but it is not very important.
