And why not instruct in the CJ? It is, after all, a primary

others might like it if you were around to help out.

I would be happy to help. My only concern is that my Internet access may

Flew last night for no other reason than it just needed to be done. Is it
just 100 years, it amazes me that we have come so far in such a short time.
If you look at sailing as a comparrison it took hundreds, if not thousands
of years to make significant advances there. In the sky it has taken just 99
years. I thinks that this just points to the fact that we really want to
fly.

I run on Lombardi time, always 15 minutes early. Or if I forget to set my clock
14 minutes and 59 seconds early. At this rate I'll be dead before I'm late.

Group,
This will be available in a copy of the Original Russian press release on the
web in a few days. I will post that site at that time. I will also be out
of town from 12/19 - 12/27, so if I do not respond to questions right away, it
is because I do not have computer access.
Happy holidays,
Jill
English version of OKBM Press release:
About the development, production and delivery of the M-14P engines and its modifications
Beginning from the mid-90s, we often received information that the so-called "red"
M-14P engines of the Romanian production appear on the US and other foreign
countries' markets.
Regarding the above, OKBM (Voronezh,Russia) as the designer of the M-14P engine
makes the following declaration:
The term of validity of the Agreement of July 1983 between the Governments of the
USSR and Romania regarding the production of aviation piston engines M-14P
and M-14B26 expired in 1995 and has not been extended.
In accordance with the above Agreement, the Romanian side had no right to sell
or hand over the technical documentation, as well as the merchandise, which would
be produced in Romania under the given license to other countries or either
physical or legal parties, except specified by the Agreement, without the approval
of the Russian side.
Also, the Romanian side without the Russian approval has no right to use the received
documentation as well as produced under the above documentation parts and
aggregates on the units produced in Romania.
Considering the above, we consider that the manufacturers of the engines in Romania
use the intellectual property of Russia illegally and we intend to take relevant
legal measures via the competent bodies of the Russian Ministry of Justice
and Foreign Affairs to the manufacturers of the engines and those who participate
in their sales.
The quality of the Romanian-produced engines and their lifetime do not correspond
with the Voronezh OKBM current produced engines since after the expiration
of the License for production of them in Romania, the OKBM bulletins regarding
the design changes directed to the increasing of the reliability and lifetime
were not sent to Romania. Previously stated by Technical Terms warranty lifetime
of 500 hr were not extended by legal order.
Taking the above into consideration, the Romanian manufacturers and suppliers of
M-14P engines undermine the prestige of the authentic designer and manufacturer
of the engines in Russia - OKBM and Voronezh Mechanical Factory.
Beginning from year 2000 OKBM produced and sold :
- 20 brand new M-14PF engines ( total amount of engines produced by us is 70)
- 22 brand new M-14P engines
- 10 modified M-14X engines
- 10 modified M-14B26B engines for Mi-34 helicopter
- 3 modified M-14B26B1 engines of 370 h.p. instead of 325 h.p. standard power.
All types of engines of our production except M-14PF have Type Certificate of Interstate
Aviation Commitee. The Certification has been done under the requirements
corresponding to FAR-33.
Engines were delivered mostly to the US and some European countries.
Apart from new engines supply, OKBM carries out the repair and overhaul of all
types of M-14 engines.
ATTENTION: OKBM has developed the M-14R engine of 450 h.p. power. The first serial
engine will be delivered in Dec.2002 under the contract with "Richard Goode
Aerobatics".
Those who want to purchase the above engines or the genuine parts and also to make
overhaul of the engines we request to address by official channels to our
company. We'll be happy to provide necessary technical service to all who are
interested in purchasing of our product.

I was thumbing through Trade-A-Plane the other day, and I stumbled on and ad I've
seen several times, so I decided to call. The ad was for Factory new Yak 9U's
at 1/10 the cost of a P-51. Well figuring 1 mil for a Mustang, could it be
true that I can have a brand new WWII fighter for just a hundred grand?? Well...............no.
The airframe WO engine or prop is $200k, it uses an allison
engine which can be had for about $30k and about $12k for a prop. But still $300k
when its all said done isnt bad for a new fighter. Still out of my league
price wise.
While I was chatting with the nice man from Shade Tree Aviation I had mentioned
that I fly a CJ and he proceeded to tell me that sometime in Feb he will be announcing
a new quick build kit plane that he might be selling. Its an F8 Bear
Cat powered by an M-14!! It wont be 100% scale replica but about the size of
a CJ. He called this his entry level kit, so I'm assuming that it will be affordable.
He has all his planes made by a factory in Russia, I'm not sure which. I'd love
to take a look at some of his planes to check out the fit and finish.

Does you stack fit without modification to the bottom cowling exaust holes?
A neighbor of mine bought a stack from some guy in WV and the pipes didnt

Ernie,
No news here, there are YPA members flying different "new" versions of
the Yak 3/9/11 on the airshow circuit. See the YPA site for pics.
I believe the M-14 engined A/C you speak of is the kit version of the
Bear 360 that Skip Holm was working on. I'd love to see one, we have
had reports of the prototype being sighted at various airports but no
joy on big events yet.

Roughly translated, "we have to increase the danger to the community due to
noise abatement." I had already figured that out. Still, your neighbors

Oh man, you talked to Jim Wickersham. Jim is ... uh ... interesting. I
spent a fair amount of time thinking about getting one of his Yak-9Us and
visiting since Carson City, NV, was only a 30 minute CJ6A flight from
Cameron Park where I was based. Jim also has brand-new Russian M14P
engines in the box.
Jim talks a lot about the other airplanes he will have. A while back he
was going to make full-scale FW-190s, Japanese Zeros, and other WW-II
fighters available. My suggestion is to wait until you can see one
flying. But he does have Yak-9Us and they are lovely little airplanes,
kinda like an RV-4 with an allison engine. :
) You definitely wear this
airplane.
If you are interested in a P-51 at a reasonable price, you probably want to
talk to Gerry Beck of TriState Aviation in Whapeton,
ND. (701.642.5777) Gerry has been rebuilding warbirds for some time now
and has all the tooling to build P-51A/B airframes. He was at OSH 1.5
years ago with a P-51A airframe and the matching Allison engine to see if
anyone was interested. Consider: if you build it yourself from a
fast-build kit it falls under the Experimental/Amateur-built category
instead of the Experimental/Exhibition category. No travel limitations on
those LoLs folks. Something to think about.

Frank,
There is an o-ring on the oil pump drive shaft that is crucial in
preventing internal oil leak-down in the M-14. It is very easily damaged
when you assemble the oil pump to the engine. Make sure you check the
condition of this o-ring. Better yet, replace it. More than likely, it's
the cause of your leak-down problem.

Dennis;
I guess I'll have to disassemble the oil pump and give it a good
cleaning. I guess that'll take care of the oil leaking into the engine.
Thanks for the advice!

oops, just found your email!
My 285 hp stainless steel systems are an EXACT copy of the original Chinese

For a P-51A/B? Call Gerry. I haven't talked with him for a year so I
don't know where he is on the project. It looked like it was going to cost
about $300K for a real 100% accurate and full-sized P-51B. Having a North
American data plate is nice but not worth $700K to me.
BTW, the Allison engine is better built and longer lasting than the RR Merlin.

Subject: | CJ main wheel inner tubes |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Doug" <rvfltd@televar.com>
Listers and lurkers,
Recently we had a posting by a member about finding that his 500x150 tubes
were actually to large for the tires. These tubes had been installed in his
main wheels and had developed leaks because of the folds which occurred when
the too large tube was placed in the CJ tire. I must admit that I thought
he had been "smokin his shoe laces", but now I have found that he was in
fact correct. We have now discovered a second tube that is marked very
clearly 500x150, it is clearly at least 2 inches larger in diameter that the
correct CJ tube. The only difference in the tubes we could find was that
the correct tube has the roman numeral II after the size markings, while the
"too large "tube does not. I checked 16 of the proper sized tubes and all
had the Roman numeral II after the size marking. What aircraft this larger
tube was used in is unknown, however the "too large" tube we found had in
fact been removed from a CJ6 and showed the fold problem one would expect to
see after placing it in the smaller tire. So, it would seem that there may
be others lurking out there, yet to spring a leak.
Best Christmas wishes to all,
Doug Sapp

Gus,
Becareful with that thing.
A number of years ago, I worked on a homebuilt design of a scaled down
Spitfire. The engine I was contemplating put in there was quite lite for the
airframe and in order to get the weight and balance correct, I needed to
extend the nose. The numbers fell in OK, but an aerodynamicist friend
insisted on studying the stability of the new setup. He found that the
airframe became very unstable with the lengthen nose. I.E. lengthen nose -
lengthen tail.
I take it someone has already done some flight testing with the Yak, but I
bet she don't handel the same.
I hope you can get it to MTW/ OSH. Would be cool to have it on the flight
line.

Are you sure? I was under the very strong impression from several sources
that the Allison was a 1200+ hour engine as opposed to 400 hours for the
Merlin. Allisons were used in stationary power generation applications
also and they ran for a long time. The reasons they didn't stay with the
Allison in the P-51 were lower overall HP and poor up-high performance due
to the single-stage supercharger. I felt this was not a problem because I
do not expect to be doing any bomber escort duty at 40,000' and even with
the lower HP, a P-51A is still likely to outperform my CJ6A.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I'll work on an overhead break with low power
and see how that pans out. I do note that the Termikas Yak 52 manual advises against
zero throttle on the approach. We'll experiment. I do think there is great
value in repeated practice in engine-out conditions. May just be the tail-dragger
pilot in me.
Strikes me that I may want to work on my CTAF description for the break, though.
I've learned not to call, e.g. "Out of WISKE on the GPS to 18," even though
that's accurate, because 90% of the traffic in the pattern will have no idea
what I'm talking about. Calling "On the overhead break to 18," as I've heard people
call, strikes me as no different. It's all about blending in and helping
everyone be smart.
