I was concerned about that also (polar moment of inertia) so we asked the
airframe designer. He said that there is sufficient control authority and
structural strength in the empenage to recover from a spin with the weight in
the tail.

Well, you have already moved a lot of weight aft. Weigh the airplane and then
recalculate the CG.

When I am doing transistion training in the CJ6A I spend almost all of the
second lesson on taxiing the airplane. I take the student over to the local
ex-AFB and use the big ramp to practice. When they can follow the lines and put
the airplane where they want it we go on to the next lesson. It ususally takes
about 45 minutes or so of practice.

There are three approaches common in experimental/amateur-built circles:
1. bias springs
2. push/pull cable trim tabs
3. small eletric servos
Vans Aircraft offer a simple lever and bias-spring trim system for the
aileron
of the RV-series aircraft. The lever just moves spring to supply a
continuous
force in the desired direction on the aileron actuator push-rod. This type
of
trim should work very well on a CJ6A since the actuator mechanism and the
control pressures are comparable. See
http://www.vansaircraft.com/public/parts.txt to get an idea of how much it
costs.
Piper uses this same type of system to provide rudder trim in a number of
their
aircraft. It is also quite effective.
Vans also uses a vernier control to move the elevator trim tab in their
aircraft. This would probably work for rudder trim as well but probably
would
provide too much static drag for the aileron.
The most popular approach is the small electric servo trim system from Mac.
I
don't have a pointer to them but here is a link to an identical system from
another manufacturer
(http://www.menzimeraircraft.com/products/trimsystems.html). These use very
small trim motors and actuators that mount inside the control surfaces.
These
may be adapted to the CJ6A without too much trouble especially if you are
planning to recover the control surfaces.

My 52 has electric elevator trim. I've never flown one with the regular trim
wheels so I have no standard for comparison. But, my instructor commented on
how much better he liked it as opposed to the trim wheels. I'm using the MAC
servo and had to recover the left elevator half after I installed it.

Yak Drivers,
I just got a call from a fellow YPA member (who just got a call from a
reporter in Salt Lake City). It appears that a Yak-52 went down in Salt Lake
City within the last hour or so. According to the reporter, the airplane is
registered to several individuals, one of whom is Ed Strauchen. If anyone has
any factual info regarding this accident, please let me know.

Midway-AP) -- Two people were killed after a small plane crashed near Midway
today just before noon.
The victims names were not immediately released.
Wasatch County Sheriff's spokesman, Sgt. Jeff Winterton, said witnesses to
the crash said the plane crashed nose first into a field and exploded into
flames.
The plane was a YAK, a small Russian plane used for military and aerobatic
training. The plane was based out of the Heber Airport. The airport is a
popular hanger for recreational pilots and the airspace is commonly used for
aerobatic training and practice.

Hi Lou;
I gave you some bum information from memory yesterday re the ballast
location that I use. I told you I ballast between frames 17 & 18. Wrong-
it's aft of frame 18, directly above the tail skid. I build a support
structure attached to frame 18 and the tail cone frame and use 1/8" lead
sheet for the ballast.

Lou, Just two things: 1. I have hydraulic brakes on my CJ installed by
Les Crowder by the previous owner in McKinney TX. Just like Doug, They
work fine, but I would not recommend doing it. The cost doesn't equal the
benefit; the pneumatic brakes are just fine.
2. I also have an M14p engine and the 55lbs sponds a little excessive,
but after all the modifications you want to do I beleive that you must
have your aircraft weighed to dertimine a hard basis for the math....BTW
I have a 13 cu ft. SCUBA tank ( which I highly recommend) located next to
my gel-cell batts. It works well....John

Regarding trim, I have three axis electric trim on the new CJ using small servo
motors. I like it a whole bunch as it is simple to trim the plane out in all
flight circumstances. Coming back from Arizona it generally burned evenly from
both tanks. The one time it did not it was a pleasure to cross trim to put
the heavy tank up - no leg strain for the crab. One consideration on the electric
trim - installing it requires that the airfoil be recovered (and repainted).
When we did the initial CG on the new plane it called for a bunch of weight in
the back. We loaded it and test flew the plane and found it didn't have near
the handling characteristics of my old plan with no weight. So we pulled out
all but the lead in the skid and it works great. I am reluctant to put a bunch
of weight in the far aft position given the momentum it can build up. I'd rather
be nose heavy when empty, carrying enough weight so that I don't run out
of trim on approach and am not going to be a lawn dart if I lose power. On the
other hand, I can carry full fuel (74 gallons), a good sized GIB (Like Russ)
and a hefty cargo load and not be aft CG. If I had much fixed weight back there
I'd leave a bunch of the rest on the ground. ( I should mention that I have
a smoke system in back and will have two light weight Kevlar tanks - one for
back up air, the other for O2).

Sorry to report that yesterday a Yak-52 went down a few miles west of Heber
Valley airport about 25 miles from Salt Lake City. The pilot, Ed Strauchen a
retired AA pilot and a Vietnam Vet F-4 pilot and his passenger was killed.
Pictures of the mishap site and reports, such as they are, from the media are
