Sun n Funner's,
Got a big, mean 400hp, 3-blade Yak? Maybe a shiny
CJ with smooth paint and an M14P? Even a standard
285hp CJ "square-rigged" dealer demo, prepped &
tuned by the most experienced experts in this
country?
Here is your chance to strut your stuff! Just sent
my entry into Aircraft Spruce for the SUN 60,
which is a production "race". This year awards
will go to the top 3 finishers in each class. I
guess the spammers must have complained about all
the warbirds eating up the trophies so now there
are 3 rather than 2 for each class.
3 or more A/C of the same type can have their own
class. If not enough Yaks or 'Changs show up I'll
just have to dine on Spam again in the 270-400hp
Open class :>)

hour.

An Hour?? You can't get that thing 60 miles in an hour! Try about 20 mins
and it's within book limits at 2250 rpm for your engine. Reduce RPM after
TO (although it will hurt speed) and leave the MAP up as the Huosai doesn't
generate that much boost anyway.
I have successfully run the Huosai at 2650 rpm but I don't recommend it.

I'd like to buy a stainless steel screw assortment for my CJ and Jet, does anyone
have the screw sizes for the majority of the screws used on the plane, I'm
mostly interested in replacing all the airframe screws. A source for a good screw
assortment would also be appreciated.

Ernie,
Yak Metric http://www.yakmetric.com/ has assortments prepackaged, although
I'm not overly enthused with their phillips head screws.
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dennis,
Yes, Phillips truss head screws. I found that I could easily mangle the
head despite the use of the proper size Phillips driver.
Cheers,
Dave

The secret I discovered to not damaging a Phillips head screw is to use a
Phillips head bit from Snap On. The tip of this bit is not as pointed as
most and the blades of the bit are not at as steep an angle. This bit
buries itself into the head because the tip doesn't bottom out.
If I can find a photo of one I'll email it to you.

Also, something to consider, what you might "THINK" is a Phillips may in
fact be a Reed and Prince, which looks like a Phillips, is sold at your
local hardware, but is not a Phillips. It has a slightly different angle on
the head, preventing it from properly seating in the Phillips screw head.
Bits are cheap, make sure they are Phillips and if they are not Snap on's
replace them frequently.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

I find that just grinding the tip of a phillips head screwdriver does almost the
same thing.

I was just out in the hangar measuring my different screws, my calipers are
in inches so I have to do a little conversion, I also need screws for my
Jet, especially one really odd ball sized one. I plan on using slotted
screws since that is what the previous owner had already started to do.

Ok heres one for you really resouceful fellows. On my Jet I have these large
straps which cover the wing attach points and are held in place by a large
number of screws. These are countersunk flathead slotted screws M6 x 16mm
with a head diameter of 17mm. Can anyone tell me where I can get these??

Ernie,
What is the angle on the countersink? 120 or 100 degrees? The secret
here is to correctly ID the part. "DIN" standard parts catalogs are
widely available but we are talking metric aerospace hardware. There is
some cross-over.
BTW, you don't really want slotted head screws...at least you won't
after the first time your flat tip screw driver tip goes scratching
across your $18K paint job.

I have no idea on the degrees, or how to find out, kinda small to put a
protractor on.
I know what you're saying about scratching across the paint, but if your
plane looked like mine you wouldnt worry about it. Mine looks like a proper
warbird, not all prissed up like some beauty queen :)

Hi Doug;
Are Reed & Prince drivers still available? I have some AN structural screws
with R & P heads but the only R&P screwdriver I ever had was worn out and
thrown away 30 years ago. I thought these screws were an aberation from the
distant past. Surprised to hear they are still available.

I got about $100 into my paint job and it looks it. Scratch and slop.
Looked OK the first 2-3 years.
