WEST COAST FORMATION CLLINIC AND FLY-IN 2003
To ALL who are interested in the 2003 edition of the West Coast Formation
Clinic, please read on: Plans are presently underway to conduct the 6th
annual WCFC at the former Castle AFB (KMER) on May 16-18, 2003. I am
currently awaiting pricing information for lodging, meals, etc. and will be
sending out flyers/e-mails once this is received. In an effort to develop
our event into an even more enjoyable week end, we anticipate having the
following activities:
-Basic formation ground school.
-Formation flight training.
-Early arrival provisions on Thurs 15th & Fri 16th for those wishing to get
a head start with their formation training.
-Program activities involving fighter type/bomber formation flying. (Tony
Banta plans to bring the P-40, P-51, and Bearcat..Also Lynn Hunt hopes to
bring the B-25!)
-Fly-over of the Jeremiah OBrien Liberty Ship.
-Rides available is a variety of war bird aircraft. We hope to have rides
available in the B-25, T-33, SNJ, T-28, YAK/CJ, and possibly L-39 aircraft.
-Formation flight contest.
-Self guided tours of the Castle Air Museum.
-WARBIRD FLY-IN encouraged by any and all war birds, even if they do not
plan to participate in the WCFC clinic activities (CAF membership not
required).
The WCFC 03 will NOT be an air show or an air faire, but is planned to be
a gathering of warbirds with the emphasis placed on those interested in
formation flying. As in previous years, those participating in clinic
activities will need to become members of the CAF (insurance requirements
so dictate), but ANYONE who owns a war bird is encouraged to join us for the
weekend. More information will be forthcoming as it becomes available, and
the website will be updated later this month. Please pass the word around
to those you feel would be interested in attending. Fly safely, regards,
Jim Booth.

Folks,
Your YPA is hosting a fast clinic to start off this years All Red Star 2003 at
Castle Airport May 07 - 11.
I want to insure no confusion with the CAF form clinic at Castle which starts the
very next week. A post was recently put on the list for this event and they
can be easily confused. Although we may connect the events in the future, this
year they are separate, with differant venues and activities outside of FAST
formation training.
However, as some of our attendees did last year; if you live in the Western Region
and are attending our Red Star Formation Clinic, if for any reason you need
to complete some additional sorties for FAST certification, the close dates
of the these two events will allow you to roll right in & warmed up at the CAF
event. That's simply an option you have, I will contact Mr Booth on arranging
any flow-through discounts or other help to get your training goals achieved
at Red Star 2003...

Here are some updates on this years Red Star: The web site and online registration
will open on the 15th of Feb.
Allen Silvers, Master Parachutist and Rigger, is planning on parachuting from a
CJ-6 or Yak 52 aircraft if all test & logistical hurdles are met (read FAA).
He has parachuted from several aircraft such as the T-34, T-6, Stearman and others.
We are currently working with the FAA for the required paperwork...The
jumps will be filmed.
We are developing an IAC judged, non-sanctioned aerobatics competition. This scaled
down one day competition will integrate our pure aerobatics aircraft owners/pilots
who operate such aircraft as the Yak 55, 50, Su-26, Zlin, etc. This
promotes our mission statement of "All owners and pilots, jet to prop, warbird
to aerobatics, Fighter to Utility, All Red Star...
Aeroshell has signed on as an annual sponsor for the event, they are currently
working on supplying oil for 2003, we came in after the deadline this year, but
the boss there is working an exception.
American Propeller has signed on as a sponsor, and they are donating the trophies
and other items.
Desser tires has signed on as a sponsor and is donating what we all could use...
Say thanks to these folks if you need their products,
Drew Allen Blahnick

Anybody have experience with the C.A.T.S. earpiece/headset system? I was
looking for something ANR that I could use in the CJ and at work (with and
without my helmet).... They claim that it works better than ANR systems....
curious about real world experience with it though....

I got one last year, but so far I have not been able to get it to work properly
in both planes that I have tried it in.
It cuts out the background noise brilliantly and works fine until the background
noise gets too high, then the microphone just seems to pick up noise.
I have tried it in a Yak 12 and an Auster. I generally fly with the window wide
open, which makes noise even worse and also wind noise can also become a problem
on a boom microphone.
When the Auster is going again (we have a mag problem), I will do some more tests.
I got the impression that the noise pick up was from the back of the microphone
(in one of the earpieces), so it can possibly be fixed. I also need to try
it in something less noisy and more common like a 172 (although the Auster
is not too bad) because it is possible that mine has a fault.

I paid for one back at the AOPA convention in PSP. They send you some ear goo
to make molds of your own ear...a strange and unconfortable process. I sent it
back to them, and they replied a few weeks later saying I didn't do it right.
They sent me more goo. I remolded my ears. I sent that in and didn't hear from
them for several weeks, so I called. They said it would be another three
weeks...that was five weeks ago. So.. I dunno, but I can keep you posted.
