--> Yak-List message posted by: "Mark Jefferies" <mark@yakuk.com> In response to:- "One model of the Yak-18T had that type valve come from the factory on it. " ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Early YAK 52's and YAK 18T have an automatic "off load" valve, the operation is that at a pre set pressure say 50 ata, the valve opens allowing all compressor air to vent. If bottle "system pressure" drops (again to a pre set) the valve closes. simple as that!! Advantages 1. automatic and no pilot thinking required. cuts in at 40 ata so when you drop the gear in the pattern no need to close the valve at a high work load time. Disadvantage 1. cost and a bit of weight. I have fitted these valves to the YAK 11's we have rebuilt. Hope this clarifies the position. mark j

Mine seems free but it sheared the pins and considering the job it is to change I want this one overhauled or replaced. Thanx. Bob PS Mine lasted abt 270hrs. -----Original Message----- From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Doug Subject: Re: Yak-List: Snot Valve --> Yak-List message posted by: "Doug" <rvfltd@televar.com> Guys, Last year I hooked my compressor so it could be opened in flight, installed a fuel flow, and a digital tac. All in an effort to de-bunk or confirm this claim of fuel savings or more power. I found that in cruise when the snot valve was opened and the fuel flow and the tac were monitored, no change was noted in either instrument. So either the measurements are so small that my instruments could not detect them, or there was in fact no change. Either way I think its not worth doing. Any small gain (if there is any) is lost when you stop to consider that you have just created another thing to cause you grief when you least expect it. Also, about pump life. Getting an excess of 600 hours out of a pump is wishful thinking. These types of accessories seldom make engine TBO. But considering the difficulty in R&R'ing the compressor, it would be great if this one was a bit longer lasting. One last thought--Many machines are designed to operate under a load, so there is the outside chance that we might not be extending the life by taking the pressure off the pump, and in fact might be shorting it. food for thought. I ask for the exchange as I am trying to gather up the parts to overhaul. I feel that if we don't gain this knowledge now we may be in trouble down the line if the supply of these new pumps is no longer available. PLEASE put the Chetek Alert in goggle and go to the website and vote YES in the poll and PLEASE see if you can find anyone else to do so...one vote/computer. I'm forwarding my letter to refute the article on the airport manager... http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?brd=1134 VOTE "YES" Thanks so much Larry February 20, 2003 From: Larry Schlasinger Im presently out of the country, but I was made aware of the article in the Alert and controversy regarding my aerobatic box and aerobatic flying. It is unfortunate that the situation has gotten so far out of hand and that there has been so much time wasted in dealing with such a simple matter. The entire problem comes down to the fact that Gene Buffington and Todd Kirkman (Genes good friend) dont like me. This dislike is easy to understand if one knows all the facts. First, Todd and I used to be friends. I dealt with Todd in business (since we are both in the aviation business) and also as a personal friend. Todd has his own way of doing business but since we are all a bit different, I overlooked many of Todds unusual business practices. Todd originally supported my aerobatic flying and actually had me teach him to fly aerobatics in his Russian Yak. My relationship with Todd fell apart when I assisted the Washburn County Sheriffs Department in an airplane burglary investigation. The evidence gained during this investigation led directly to Todd and he was eventually arrested for the crime, as reported in the Chetek Alert some time ago. Todd blamed me for his arrest, and is now doing anything he can to inconvenience and discredit me. I cant change the fact he was involved in this action and I refused to do anything other than what was proper at the time, regardless of the fact we had been friends. The story with Gene is something different. Gene has been involved with aviation for much longer than I have and to listen to him you would think that he knows much more than I do (and everyone else). He was (and still is) the commanding force that rules the Chetek Airport (regardless of the committee structure in place) and most of the people in Chetek consider him an expert and let him have his way. When I came to Chetek, I found that Gene controlled everything at the airport and if I wanted anything done Id need to have his approval, which meant that I needed to acknowledge that he was the commander and the airport expert. The problem was that Gene is not an expert in General aviation. He has absolutely no training or experience in airport management. Gene was an airline captain, which, with the assistance of an enormous company, he flew a plane. No business experience, management experience or people skills. This was confirmed by the State Of Wisconsin DOT telling me that they had tried many times to get Gene to attend airport management classes and he always thought that for him this was unnecessary. Gene has claimed that my aerobatic flying is unsafe and my area is unsafe. It appears that Gene thinks he knows more than the experts at the State of Wisconsin Department of Aeronautics and also the Federal Aviation Administration. BOTH of these agencies have PERSONALLY inspected and APPROVED my flying and my area (I hold a special license that allows me to fly aerobatics to ground level and Gene has no such license or experience). The State DOT actually came to our airport committee meeting and told Gene that everything was safe. Gene didn'tt accept this answer and amazingly called the director of the DOA and told him that the inspector that had come to our meeting had done a bad job and Gene wanted it said that my aerobatic box was unsafe. Naturally this didn'tt happen. It was confirmed again, in writing and drawings, that there was absolutely no overlap or conflict or safety issue. Gene has made many, many mistakes at the airport and has always blamed others for these mistakes. He has taken the best hangar spot for himself, chosen to build his hangar higher than the neighbors hangars (contrary to the State of Wisconsin engineers recommendation) so the neighbor has a drainage problem, taken the neighbors black dirt for his own landscaping, complained about the noise of my Cessna 185 (which I flew from the Chetek Airport very seldom as I normally kept it at my home airport) and then bought his own 185, producing exactly the same noise as my 185, and proceeded to do practice takeoffs & landings making more noise in one day than I made in a month. Gene also falsified the airport committee records in August of 2002, indicating that the Airport committee had voted and passed a motion to write a letter to the FAA to close down my aerobatic box. There was no such vote (confirmed by the two members of the committee in favor of my aerobatic flying). Never the less, Gene made up the minutes to indicate that there was and went ahead and wrote the letter to the FAA without the authority to do so. The list of Genes mistakes goes on and on. The reason he has such a problem with me is that I call a spade a spade and always let him know what I think of his poor decisions and abilities and that I call him on his numerous mistakes and selfish endeavors. Gene takes this personally and is doing anything in his power to take away what he perceives as something important to me. He even cancelled the 4th of July airshow that I had been doing as my contribution (absolutely no charge) for the people of Chetek and Hydroflites Ski Team, because we didn'tt make him the Airshow co-coordinator or ask his permission in the first place. Id have been very happy to have him help, but he had no interest and only complained about the show. Some time ago, I was informed by Judy Reichert, that she, after hearing about Genes attempt to shut me down, had started a petition to show that my neighbors supported my aerobatic flying, my airshow and aerobatic box. I had absolutely NOTHING to do with starting or pushing this petition, it was done without my knowledge. The Chetek Town Board, as well as many others, willingly signed this petition. Naturally I was very happy to have had this done. Over the years Ive been flying aerobatics and the airshow, Ive had many, many people comment how much they enjoy the flying and this year on how many were disappointed in not having the show for the 4th. Ive recently been made aware that Gene started HIS OWN petition and has been calling all my neighbors himself, looking for people against my flying. Im sure he can find some if he really tries, but why not have a real vote among ALL the people of the area and see what everyone thinks. Ill be happy to make Gene a deal. If there is such a vote and I loose, Ill move my aerobatic flying elsewhere and never do another airshow in Chetek. On the other hand, if the people vote to keep me flying and doing the airshow, then how about Gene stepping down from any and all forms of airport management and let someone replace him that will do the airport and the community of Chetek some good and quit using a city office to forward a personal vendetta.
