We are running our clinic/fly-in this year concurrently with the Sun-N-Fun
fly-in so that we are better able to participate in the S&F warbird
activities. There are two parallel events taking place: first, we are
conducting FAST training starting with the FAST ground school on the morning
of April 2nd. Second, we are practicing for and then flying mass formations
and fly-bys at Lakeland (LAL) during the warbirds portion of the airshow.
The FAST ground/flight training will take place at Bartow (BOW) and continue
on a daily basis whenever there is not a conflict with our airshow
commitment. The Sun-N-Fun schedule can be found at the following website:
http://www.sun-n-fun.org
That is about the best I can give you as far as a schedule--it is obviously
somewhat of a fluid situation and subject to revision as events unfold. Here
is the S&F schedule that Jim Goolsby posted last week to give you somewhat of
an idea of what may be happen.
Regards,
Mike Filucci

My tach stopped working today. It stopped front and rear at the same time.
Just prior to failing it began to pulse from the correct setting down. Then
it died completely. I suspect that I have a loose wire. What happens when
the Tach sender unit fails. I would imagine that it would either work or not
if that happened. think that the sender unit is behind the cylinders on the
port side next to the air distributor. I had a quick look and noticed that
the leads were loose (not cable tied into place. Does anyone have experience
of this ?

The tach generator is a three-phase device. It rarely fails entirely
all-at-once electrically. You can lose a phase (one wire) and it will still work.
I had a problem with mine which turned out to be engine oil on the contacts
(evidently the oil did a good job of preventing metal-to-metal contact). I
washed the connector in "blue wing solvent" (avgas) and everything was fine again.

Gus;
If your installation has a flex drive to the tach generator check the drive
shaft for failure.

I put my Yak in the hangar today and opened all the inspection panels and floorboards.
I used a magnet and then a vacuum cleaner to "De-FOD" my Yak 52.
In addition to some oily grime I found the following:
One pen
One pebble
One velcro strap - one inch wide, one inch diameter
One dead pop rivet
Some general little "crap" (dust, dirt etc)
A screw
Another velcro strap - one inch wide, one inch diameter
One loose wire bundle beneath cockpit two (the old ADF antenna bundle?) Totally
unsecured and flopping about like . .. (Adjacent to the flight control tube
and gear actuater).
One loose wire bundle in the hell-hole. (more decommisioned ADF limbs I think).
Took me about two hours.
From the insurance side: There have been a number of questions lately about FOD
contamination of the flight controls. Our airplanes are susceptible to FOD-Fouling
of the controls. I certainly don't want to die in an airplane because
of a two dollar wrench.
Other warbirds like the T6 have a larger cockpit which keeps the control tube up
high, but out flight control tube resides near the bottom of the fuselage and
is at danger from FOD.
If you get a spare few hours, just go through your aircraft and do a FOD clean
verification.
I'd like to see the whole FLEET of Nanchang / Yaks get a good FOD check.
Fly Safe,

Gus,
Most likely a wire has come loose (vibration, etc) in
the tach sending unit below the left mag; I had the
same thing happen. Start by taking the cannon plug
apart. A quick solder and reassembly.
Best of luck,

I think you are right. I did give it a quick inspection and, as I said, the
wire securing clip does not grab the wires.
Is the sending unit a 210 V as synco ? or does it just produce a pulse per
rev ?
I will post to the group with my findings.

Hi Yakheads,
I'm a new guy that just bought into a 4-way partnership on a '67 CJ-6 based
out of Roanoke, Texas. Heckuva airplane, flies a lot like the T-34 from my Navy
days, but sure is different in every other way. I'm getting lots smarter
thanks to this forum.
First of many questions: Does there exist an adapter to mate the electrical
power receptacle on the CJ with a standard power cord on the typical external
power carts found at most FBO's? If so, what is the step-by-step procedure
for hooking up external power to run the electrics? I am mainly concerned with
powering the aux air compressor on the ground in the event of low or no air.
Thanks and looking forward to chattin with you all.

Could be either the tach generator itself or possibly a loose connection to

Jim,
There are a number of ways to modify you external power. One or two folks
here on the list sell the external plug. You take it and modify it so that
you may plug in a US plug to it. I sure there are other suggestions out
there.
I take it that you have an electric compressor installed in the plane? What
type and what voltage does it run off?

European Champ Buys American
While Wall Street frets about the Europeans taking the lead in some
aerospace ventures, there's proof positive that some Europeans still respect
Yankee know-how. One of Europe's best aerobatic pilots, 2001 European
champion Zoltan Veres, of Hungary, will use a custom-built round-engined
Culp's Special biplane for the 2003 competition and air show schedule. "It's
definitely a crowd pleaser," said Steve Culp, the plane's designer. "There's
kind of a nostalgia about it. A lot of people would like to see the older,
more graceful aerobatics." Culp said Veres's Special will be no slouch in
the air since it will sport a 400-horsepower M-14P radial spinning a
three-bladed prop. Besides competitions and shows, Veres will use the
Special for a 70th anniversary commemoration of a biplane flight by two
Hungarian pilots, who circumvented the Mediterranean in a bid to boost
aviation in their country. Veres is helping Culp and a team of technicians
build the airplane at Gesoco Industries in Swanton, Vt. The seven-week
construction process will be finished in a couple of weeks and test flights
will begin immediately afterward. Then, the plane will be disassembled and
shipped to Hungary for final painting and the start of the season.
