Virtually all eletric tachs work the same way. The sender is a three-phase AC generator that produces anything from about 20-50 volts depending on model (US tach generators work the same way). There is a three-phase motor in the tach itself that turns at exactly the same speed (synchronized) as the tach generator. The tach itself then has a standard mechanical tachometer connected to the shaft of the motor. If two of the three phases reach the motor, the motor will still run but might not start reliably or indicate accurately. Once the generator and motor synchronize, they will stay in sync with just two of the three phases. The "pulse per rev" system is more modern and comes from newer microprocessor-based systems that can count accurately. That sort of system was not generally available back in the '40s and '50s. -- Brian Lloyd 6501 Red Hook Plaza, Suite 201 brian@lloyd.com St. Thomas, VI 00802 +1.340.998.9447 - voice +1.360.838.9669 - fax

I just sold the Presidential YAK 50 which was owned by the current President of Lithuania. Once he was elected, he was no longer permitted to fly it. But the down side was that if you count my lathe time as worth even 25 bucks an hour, I have about 200 bucks into it plus the clamps and cables which cost me another $45.00. The four or five trips to town chasing parts are not considered!! After doing it I think that if I had it to do again I would buy a common (Cessna or Beech or Piper) one that had the correct contactor size and make only the plug in portion on the lathe, it would me much easier.---and quicker. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Janet Davidson" <gbvfx@hotmail.com> Jim Would it not be simpler to recharge the air using a dive bottle and the adaptor which connects to the external air charge? When the pnuematic system on my aircraft was leaking, and I had to fly it home, I carried a small dive bottle with me (no aerobatics ;), and used that when necessary. The dive bottle I had contained enough air to refill the system 2.5 times before it had to be refilled, so I could rely on it for a couple of starts.

--> Yak-List message posted by: Gus Fraser <fraseg@comcast.net> I did the same conversion in England. I pulled the existing ear muffs out and installed the DC ones in place. The boom mike was a wiring and mic replacement. The hardest bit is securing the strings that hold the muffs in place. What I have done here is to put my DC headset into a US Navy Deck helmet. The type used by ground crews on the ac carriers. They are made by DC. They sell for about $30 on Ebay. Be careful though because you will be competing with the star wars geeks as they like to get them to play Luke Skywalker as these ate the same helmets they used in the film for the xwing pilots. --> Yak-List message posted by: cjpilot710@aol.com I normally make my takeoffs and landing (solo) with my front canopy open, unless its really raining or really cold. I do my little arco routine with the canopy crack to the first notch. I've flown and still do, with both cracked open all the time, even during arco. I've inadvertently flown over 300kph with the rear canopy full opened. Nothing happened. I have seen rear canopies jump their track when allowed to slide back without restraint. I never fly (and I brief my BS) with both canopies open at the same time. With them both open, the GIB gets the full blast (I do not the center wind screen). You can fly with either one cracked to the notch, with other full opened. Do I do acro with my canopy open? No,- - - but that's mental thing for me. The Russian helmets put the speakers in series, but with a Garmin audio panel, it doesn't seem to matter... we've mixed and matched using two helmets, one helmet and one headset, and two headsets when flying and not had any problems. Personally, I like the ZSh-7[AP] helmets better than the HGU-55... I think they have a wider field of view, and I like the way they fit. --> Yak-List message posted by: Gus Fraser <fraseg@comcast.net> I suggest the same as Jon, just ignore the volume. If you need to keep it (No volume on the panel) then you could just mount a 10K pot in the cord. But really you just want full volume. When you remove the volume controls you will need to fill the wholes left behind. The best way to do this is with some plastic metal or two part resin glue. You need to do this otherwise you will not get the full noise reduction. Hope this helps Gus -----Original Message----- From: owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-yak-list-server@matronics.com]On Behalf Of Ernie Subject: Re: Yak-List: Helmet conversion --> Yak-List message posted by: "Ernie" <ernest.martinez@oracle.com> My helmet already has the boom mike so all I would need to do is replace the speakers, but what do I do about the volume controls on the headset? De-solder the two wires from the speakers and reinstall the DC's into the helmet by soldering the two wires from the existing helmet speakers to the DC speakers. I am currently in Cincinnati, Ohio. Oh yea, McCoy if you read this call me 513.312.5244, I understand Steve Hanshew contacted you on my behalf. I would like to be part of this great list, but really looking for support from y'all. I know I maybe opening a can of worms, but just trying to allow those senior to me to put their two cents in. --> Yak-List message posted by: Barry Hancock <radialpower@cox.net> Gang, I have just completed updating the Map Rooms at allredstar.com. If you have registered your name should now be in the corresponding region at http://www.allredstar.com/Map_Room.asp. Please contact me with any corrections. If you have not registered, there is a chance your name is there anyway as I know some folks are hard at work modifying their planes to fit bombs or busy looking for that extra 1/10 of a knot... :) If you have not yet registered and would like to be counted, visit the Recruiting Office at http://www.allredstar.com/Recruiting_Office.asp Registrations for Red Star West II have continued coming in. I have fielded a number of questions, most of which are already on the site, so please take time to look around http://www.allredstar.com/Current_ops_RS_homepage.asp, as we have tried to provide answers to many of the questions you may have. Good news here as well... We have a Yak-9, maybe 2, and a Yak-11, that have committed to coming and will be putting on demonstrations in the aerobatic box - and I hear rumors that some current military hardware with Red Stars on them are trying to be there. Also, Master Rigger Alan Silver is planning to do an actual egress from the back seat of a CJ during the event - that I have to see! We are also making progress on a few more sponsors that will definitely add to the "ditty bag" for those attending. Hope to see you there.... Cheers, Barry Barry Hancock Red Stars, Inc. 949.300.5510 www.allredstar.com "Communism - Lousy Politics, Great Airplanes"
