I am looking for a Yak-52 instructor to recommend to an acquaintance living in
the Sacramento, CA, area. He is in the process of buying a Yak-52 and I want to
ensure that he gets a good instructor since he is not what I would call a
"natural born pilot." Given that the Yak-52 (with 400 hp engine) is
substantially more complex and demanding than the Cherokee in which he has most
of his experience, I would really like to make sure that he has an instructor
who will take the time to clearly define the edges of the envelope for him and
will train him to stay squarely in the middle of the envelope.

EAAWB
We have been hearing news reports of late, that school children of service
personal, have been mocked by their "educators" and other children. This
being some absurd attempt at antiwar sentiment.
A number of our members have suggested that EAAWB sponsor some type of action
to give special recognition and appreciation to the children of service
personal. It was recommended that special Young Eagle flights be offered to
the different military service dependent programs.
Would that be possible?

There is a custom fitted backing plate attached to the crank about 6 inches
behind the blades. There is only about 3 inches clearance between the
spinner base and the cowling.

I am in the final stages of completing a CJ restoration and have the following
questions:
1) Does anyone know of a propeller shop that will balance the standard two blade
prop? The shop in the Minneapolis/St Paul area is not showing any real interest
in balancing it because of the experimental/exhibition nature.
2) This might seam really trivial but...the threaded shank of forks which connect
the trim tab horn to the push rod only have 1/4 inch of thread contact with
the female threads of the pushrod. We have everything rigged as per all the written
documentation we can obtain. I really don't remember how it looked when
it was dismantled for recovering. Is this threaded length in contact normal?
The basic rule I learned many years ago was that maximum thread strength occurred
with 3 full threads in contact. Which is about the width of a corresponding
nut.
3) I have seen a few CJs with a screen in the oil cooler inlet. I have an early
model. Was this something added later or just an individual decision to help
minimize damage from birds that can't get out of the way?
4) Does anyone produce a readily available foam cushion set to fit into the standard
seat pan? I'm aware of the various foam materials which are available but
wonder if there is a source that has a cushion set already preshaped to fit
the pan. If not, I can cut and shape the foam.
5) Any tricks, shortcuts, things you'd do differently or other words of wisdom
about installing a JPI EDM-700-9 engine analyzer?
Thanks

Hi Dennis,
Down here in Miami and Palm Beach we have a couple of prop shops that are
not Experimental/Exhibition shy - it a long haul though...
As to the JPI 700-9C - I've been happily flying with it for nearly three
years and I like it very much. I opted to include the fuel-flow option
which makes the fuel management easy (and it couples to your paneled or
hand-held GPS). I would urge you to follow the manufacturer's installation
instructions just as they are written (That's what I did) - short cuts here
can be a major headache and costly.
Have a great safe fun with your CJ,
Sam Sax

Many of us have put screens in the oil cooler inlet to keep kids from
disposing of their trash at air shows. It is also helpful to make a
restrictor plate to help keep the oil warm in winter.
