Subject: | Transporting wounded Marines by Angel Flight |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Yakjock" <Yakjock@msn.com>
Greetings to all:
Many of you know that I am active with Angel Flight West, an organization of private
pilots that provides free air transport for "compelling humanitarian needs".
With the return of wounded soldiers from Iraq we have found a new need.
Many of the returning wounded would like to spend time at home but can't afford
the trip, and the government does not provide funds for this. Angel Flight
West (the eleven Western States) has stepped in to help provide transport home
and back for wounded Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton. The letter below
is from Cheri Cimmarusti, AFW's chief coordinator in Santa Monica, CA.
We have these requests for help in getting wounded Marines home... please let me
know if you can help either on an AF mission or by donating commercial frequent
flier miles... We will be getting more of these requests in as the wounded
keep returning... I have printed all of your former responses... but if you see
something you can do... please let me know. Please know how appreciative these
kids (and most of them ARE kids!) are. We had lunch with one in Santa Monica
on Friday... and it was so amazing!
Cpl McC**** - 4/22 Columbus, Ohio
Shrapnel to left side of body.
PFC Peter G****** - wants to go to Puerto Rico, but can get there if we can get
him to FL
Injury unknown
Lt. Tavis McN***** - 4/22 - Medford, Or
Shrapnel wound to face
We can do this in one hop or relay - let me know what you can do
Cpl Dawani K***** - approx one week - Tulsa, OK
Amputation left hand
Thanks for all you can do...
If you wish to help in some way you can contact AFW at their website http://www.angelflight.org/ . I'll check to see what other AF organizations are doing for the military in other parts of the country, or you can check it out yourself.
For those of you that also fly certificated spam cans and want to use them for
a good cause, check out the Angel Flight in your area.
Thanks for bearing with me. I thought you'd like to know that for those of us
who fly these special airplanes there's a way we can help the living as well as
honoring those who have died for us with our missing man formations.

I am a native Chicagoan now living in the western suburbs. As a fair haired boy
air traffic controller back in the mid to late 70s, Meigs (CGX or Chicago Brand
X) was my first assigned duty station and where I achieved full performance
level (FPL). I was checked out on local control by my trainer during the Machine
Tool Convention on a day we set a record with over 1200 operations. We
actually had more operations than O'Hare that day. As a pilot I trained and received
my Private out of Midway approximately 7 nm SW of Meigs. In the 25+ years
I have been flying, I have landed and taken-off from Meigs dozens of times
and flew up and down the lake shore through the Meigs control zone (later Class
D airspace) countless times. As a result of my intimate relationship with
Meigs over the years, I was as disheartened as anyone over the manner in which
it was closed and partially ripped-up. However, I must now report that as far
as I can discern from the local news, the non-flying public which has us outnumbered
1000 to 1 supports this action. From people being interviewed on the
street in front of Sears Tower insisting they feel safer after the closing to
a letter in the Chicago Sun-Times from a fisherman wanting to know when he will
be allowed to fish from Northerly Island. He stated that he refuses to call
it Meigs (the piece of land on which Meigs is built is named Northerly Island).
Even the support we do have reflects more of an opposition to Mayor Daley
than outright support of Meigs itself. And that opposition to the Mayor and
his policies is a minority. He is and has been a hugely popular mayor. So guys
and gals, as valiant as our efforts might be, do not fool yourselves that
non-flying public opinion is even remotely on our side. I wish the news were better.
One last note, please do not let this fiasco stop you from visiting Chicago.
It is still a great place in all seasons except winter. The surrounding
GA airports (all in the suburbs) boast quite an impressive collection of Yaks
and CJs.
Fly Safely,
Bob M.

I lived in a NW 'burb of Chicago a few years ago and flew my Yak-52
out of Lake In the Hills. I even flew down from there to Meigs to
work for the day a few times. I like Chicago, but I'll not spend
any money in Chicago. Since I now live on the east coast, I will
make all effort to make my travel plans around Chicago. If I have
to change planes in ORD, I'll not buy anything at the airport. Not
at least until the )(*&)(*&* is out of office.
