--> Yak-List message posted by: Craig Payne <cpayne@mc.net> I believe that the biggest "friends" Meigs had, were the past two IL Republican Governors. Gov Edgar, because he liked flying in there and Gov Ryan, because he knew Daley didn't want it. Things have changed. The new gov is a Dem and he is not going to fight Daley over this issue. About five years ago I flew my CJ into CGX for Young Eagles and a "Save Meigs" rally that Gov Edgar attended. Strange things happened, the power went out in the washrooms and all 41 (I counted) auto parking spots outside were completely filled with Chicago police squad cars....and a few more were patrolling for illegal parkers. My bet is that the new "Park" will have a Casino nearby. Craig Payne

I have always wondered if assasination is a political statement. I know it is in the Middle East but now that they have exported their brand of terrorism to here are we included in that part of the game? Do we get to fight back that way now? I once read a fun little SF book about a planet that was settled by expats from Texas. Their constitution had a neat little clause that said that if a citizen took exception to the works of a politician the citizen was free to call the politician out in a high-noon-type gunfight. It led to politicians who were very careful not to infringe on any rights and privileges of their consituency and who were pretty good with a handgun in a "tactical situation". I remember thinking, "what a good idea!" For those who would like to live vicariously it is "Lone Star Planet" by H. Beam Piper. The book has no sex, some unique philosophical concepts, a whodunit, and an alien foe that struck me as being taken from the pages of WW-II. (But then the book was written in the early '60s before we got political correctness.) With the return of wounded soldiers from Iraq we have found a new need. Many of the returning wounded would like to spend time at home but can't afford the trip, and the government does not provide funds for this. Angel Flight West (the eleven Western States) has stepped in to help provide transport home and back for wounded Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton. The letter below is from Cheri Cimmarusti, AFW's chief coordinator in Santa Monica, CA. We have these requests for help in getting wounded Marines home... please let me know if you can help either on an AF mission or by donating commercial frequent flier miles... We will be getting more of these requests in as the wounded keep returning... I have printed all of your former responses... but if you see something you can do... please let me know. Please know how appreciative these kids (and most of them ARE kids!) are. We had lunch with one in Santa Monica on Friday... and it was so amazing! If you wish to help in some way you can contact AFW at their website http://www.angelflight.org/ . I'll check to see what other AF organizations are doing for the military in other parts of the country, or you can check it out yourself. For those of you that also fly certificated spam cans and want to use them for a good cause, check out the Angel Flight in your area. Thanks for bearing with me. I thought you'd like to know that for those of us who fly these special airplanes there's a way we can help the living as well as honoring those who have died for us with our missing man formations. --> Yak-List message posted by: MFilucci@aol.com Dear Boston Globe Editor: As a citizen who shares your concern for protecting the security of Boston and all the other major metropolitan centers of our proud country, I want to commend you on your enthusiasm for attacking the problem of the terrorist threat. Unfortunately, I fear that your efforts are misdirected. I would like to recruit you and all the resources at your command to combat terrorism where we are most vulnerable. If we examine the methodology of terrorists over the last few decades we find that, by far, the weapon of choice has been the car bomb or truck bomb. One has only to look at the death and destruction rendered by the car/truck bombs detonated at the Marine barracks in Beirut and, more recently, in Bali to realize the magnitude of the problem. These bombings are only two devastating examples of the hundreds of car/truck bombs that have been detonated worldwide, killing thousands. Interestingly enough, terrorists have never used a general aviation aircraft in an attack, and with good reason-a GA aircraft does not have nearly the cubic capacity of the average family minivan and certainly not the volume of a tractor-trailer. Further, it does not take any special skill to "pilot" an automobile. To make matters worse, while GA aircraft number just a little over two hundred thousand, automobiles and trucks number in the tens of millions. It is time for a call to action! We must move to immediately ban all cars and trucks from all the major metropolitan centers throughout the United States. Boston can be the first establish these protective measures and set the standard for all to follow. I propose we establish an agency within each metro area to focus resources on keeping these potentially lethal motor vehicles out. In Boston, the new agency, the Boston Uniformed Terrorist Trackers (BUTT) would act to shield our urban dwellers from this known, deadly, and currently employed threat. Based on your enthusiasm for protecting the populace of this great city, I feel it only fitting that you be appointed to head up the BUTT. There is even an appropriate motto to rally the BUTT: "A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but once." Most respectfully, Mike Filucci Concerned citizen

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Ernie" <ernest.martinez@oracle.com> Thanks I'm not going near a cloud until I have about 100hrs of dual in IMC! The main reason I got it was because my written test was going to expire this month and I never want to take that again. Plus I needed the rating to get my ETR (LOA) in the jet. The FAA has differentiated between straight wing and swept wing jets and have relaxed the minimum pilot qualifications to 500 TT, but they added an instrument ticket as a requirement. Now I just need to install my 430 in my planes. Subject: Re: Meigs Closure
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Bob Fitzpatrick" <rmfitz@direcway.com> I have lived my life about 50 mi south of Chicago and the city has been a great influence. As a kid I went to it's museums and parks, the Amphitheater(gone) and even watched little airplanes operate out of Meigs. It was a dream to someday do that myself, and I did. When my first-born needed surgery it was Chicago's Children's Memorial that did the job.(She is now grown and lives in Chicago). Breaking these ties will be tough but we're doing it. There is nothing in Chicago that I have to go to. There are other parks and places of interest and businesses to deal with. My daughter can come here to visit. (She does) We can make air connections out of Bloomington (done that). If we need a hospital bad enough we can fly to Mayo's, assuming the mayor of Rochester hasn't destroyed the airport. Why? For the same reason our leaders saw fit to re-name "French Fries" in our capital and people dumped French wine, for the same reason we can't buy Cuban cigars, for the same reason we boycott the enemies of our country. If we are serious about opposing tyrants and terrorists then we should start here. Sure, Daley isn't going to care any more about our actions than he does about the law but at least we can express ourselves .When we refuse to buy from Chicago companies, when our teenage kids don't go on field trips to lawless places, when travel agents know we won't accept bookings through O'Hare, people will know there are some among us who will not support domestic terrorism, Daley-style. It is a non-violent step, which is a step above Daley tactics.
