Hi folks, just doing a 50 hr on our bird and I have the following queries... (Excuse
the assumptions, butwe all know what assumptions cause...)
1. Does anyone know what the small hole on top of the front case adjacent to the
#1 cylinder pushrod tube adapter plate is for? I assume it is some sort of vent?
If so, what does it mean if there is a fairly constant stream of oil being
emitted?
2. The 50 hr procedure in the manual talks about "cleaning the spherical joint
of the needle rocker arm of the carb" (article 142, pg 36). I assume that this
refers to the point at which the throttle linkage connects to the carb?
3.When we installed the current engine we begun an oil analysis program. Having
only put 55 hours on it so far we are of course unable to identify any trends
other than that it all looks OK. However the lead (Pb) contentis high and increasing
with the 3 samples we have so far taken. We think (hope) that this could
be due to the high Pb content in Avgas. It will be interesting to see what
happens to these levelson the next occasion having just changed the oil.
Does anyone out there have any history/ideas of their own that might help us out
on this one?

There is a gearbox breather vent up there but there is usually a gooseneck and
a
filter of some sort on it if we are talking about the same thing. I have not
seen a stream of oil but a mist of oil does come out and keep the filter wet.

Well, I believe that the "needle rocker arm" is actually the mixture linkage
but, yes, clean and lube the throttle and mixture linkage arms.

For oil analysis to work you need to sample at about the same number of hours
since an oil change since most products are cumulative. Also, you need to
sample repeatedly to develop a baseline for the numbers for your engine. Every
engine is a bit different and what you are looking for is a departure from the
normal values established over time.
Three samples in 50 hours seems a bit often. So you have changed the oil every
17 hours and sampled at the end of each oil change? That is fine if you plan to
change the oil every 17 hours from now on but most people change their oil on a
longer cycle.
So set your oil change interval and do the oil analysis always at that interval
and build up a baseline over several oil changes.
And, yes, you will get an increase in lead from fuel with time until the oil is
changed. If you sample on a consistent interval the level of lead in the oil
should remain pretty much constant. You need to establish a baseline for your
wear metals before you can make any decisions.

Actually, thinking about this some more, I think they are talking about the
secondary linkage that connects the thottle arm to the fuel metering needle arm
on the opposite side of the carb from the throttle and mixture arms.

Giday, Gents. I'm looking for a radial engine around the 275 to 300 h.p. mark for
a homebuilt
Fairchild FC2. Could any of you please advise if there is a source of supply of
the Housai
engines in North America? Actually any engine recommendation would be welcome.
I'm aware
of the Vendenyev engine sources, but they tend to be 220 hp, then 360 and up.Thanks.

Brian, the hole that I was talking about is in fact a drilling of approx 0.040"
dia and located immediately adjacent to the push rod tube base close to the 12
O'clock position.
- With regards the throttle linkage - how and where does one get into lube it as
per the book?
- Re the oil sample - the first two samples were only taken to make sure that the
engine (of unknown quantity) was not making metal or doing anything silly.
Our plan from now was to take a sample every 25 hrs with an oil change every 50
hrs.
Thanks for your comments.

I looked and mine appears not to have it. Could it be a stop

Jay;
I did a quick check on two Huosai engines today for the hole you mentioned
in the front case. I found no hole on either engine. From your last post the
location seems to be at the forward end of the main case where the cam ring
and push rods are located. I looked there as well but the light was poor and
I was pressed for time so will take a better look tomorrow but can't imagine
why there would be a hole there.
