Gus - there are two methods I'm aware of. 1) The hydraulic oil method and
2) The nitrogen method. I've used the nitrogen method for 6 years. In that
time I have had to service my damper 3 times (1996 Yak-52, 550 hours TT). I
modified the rubber tip of a blow gun, attached it my nitrogen regulator,
set the output for ~300psi, inserted the tip of the blow gun into the valve
on the damper and pulled the trigger. The stem indicator gauge popped out
and it seems to like this for about 150 hours or so. This is not the
prescribed service, but was suggested to me as perfectly adequate by one of
our primary Yak vendors. Call me and we'll set a time for you to fly over
and do the maintenance.

I was asked by several people whom TAPED my black helmet and RED STAR. Paul
Taylor was asked to tape the President of the USA helmet when he landed on
the USS Abraham Lincoln several weeks ago. He does the best tape job in the
world. It looks like it was painted on but now it is easily repairable.
Several asked for the name and phone number. Here it is:

Fellow Warbird Drivers,
The demands of work will prevent Russ Dycus from attending MTW/OSH this year.
We are looking for 2 volunteers to take on the task of Ground Boss and Air
Boss. The Ground Boss handles all the admin stuff and does not have to be a
pilot. The Air Boss doesn't have to be a pilot but does have to have a grasp
of air ops/scheduling.
Thanks,

To you magneto experts out there I have got one weird problem.
When I set my mag switch to the # 1 position the engine quits, and when I switch
from 1+2 to 2 there is no RPM drop, so 1st assumption is that the # 1 mag isnt
working.
So then I try the rear switch. First I flip the over ride switch to the up position(rear
cockpit). Same thing happens.
Flip the over ride switch back to front cockpit, and the rear mag switch still
shuts down the engine!
Switch the front mag switch and it still shuts down the engine.
It seems that the rear over ride switch has no effect on which magneto switch is
engaged, they are both engaged at all times! Which is not a good thing becuase
regarless of the over ride switch a GIB could shut down the engine by flipping
the mag switch.
First question, which is the P Lead in the MAG itself, I want to remove it so I
can ring out the wiring.
Second question, this is not the normal behaviour is it?????

Well turns out I had a busted point spring in my MAG. I was sure I had broken something
when I was installing a new radio, but it had nothing to do with me,
it was just Murphy rearing his ugly head. I did get to find out that my mag overide
switch does absolutely nothing though.
Does anyone have the point timing specs off hand, I cant find my manual that tells
me how many deg BTDC I'm supposed to set the break for.

The toggle switch just disables the front mag switch. The rear mag switch is
always enabled. This is because the rear seat is the instructor's seat and the
instructor must have a way to control the mag selector just as the rear stick
has the button that disables the brakes. Remember, in China this airplane is a
trainer and the rear seat either has an instructor or is empty as the student solos.

Well, the behavior of the toggle switch is normal. The rest sounds a bit off.

Off the top of my head I think it is as follows....
Get cylinder 4 to TDC and back off about 40-50 deg then forward to 14.5-16
Deg BTDC
The rotor should be aligned to the mark in the mag housing.
It is definitely #4 and I am pretty sure about the deg setting too.
But, as always on this list, I stand to be corrected.

The mag switch in the 52 is wired exactly the same way. Rear mag switch
overrides the front. The same for the toggle switch. That's why in the 52
(and I'm sure it's the same in the CJ) you have to have the mag switch in
the rear cockpit in the 1+2 position to start the airplane.

Eh, ah, nope! *Most* M14P mags are the M-9F fixed timing variety that
does not provide auto advance. Hence the 14.5 to 16 degree at the prop
which means about 23 degrees on the crank when spot on.
The Chinese mags are auto advance, and must be set according to a table
that varies with the degrees of advance stamped on the mag.
Get that manual out Ernie.

The rear switch DOESNT remove the front mag from operation, not matter what
position the overide switch is in I can still shut down the engine from the
front seat. I guess its not a big deal.
I only had to replace the breaker point, which entailed removing the rotor.
I lined up the post with the white insulation with the score mark on the mag
housing. then I removed the rotor and pulled the point and put in a new one.
Didnt have to worry about re-adjusting the gap since the breaker plate didnt
need to be removed.
Thanks for the info.

On the Yak-52... (I'm betting the same on the CJ)
The front and rear mag switches are in series - takes
both positioned to "1+2" to get her running right, but
either switched off will shut her down.
Cheers,

In my Cj the overide switch will remove the front mag switch from the
equation (as per circuit diagram) I went to shutdown my engine 2 days ago
and my instructor who was in back flipped switch and when I turned front
mags off engine kept running as it should otherwise there is no point to the
switch.

Anyone missing a fuel cap? The FBO at Castle has a fuel cap in good
condition, but no one has claimed it. Please call Gemini directly
209-725-1455. Also they have a grey HGU-55 helmet that someone
apparently left behind.
A brief summary of Red Star West 2003:
According to any information we can find, this year's Red Star West was
the largest gathering of such aircraft ever. Here is the breakdown of
the over 70 aircraft that attended.

This does not include the various spam cans that flew in over the
weekend to check things out.
Other than a horrendous T-storm that came out of nowhere on Thursday,
the weather was great and the flying and comraderie even better. Friday
saw the arrival of several jet trainers, and an enjoyable arrival by
Cary Venden in a USMC F-5E. Cary is a part of the ACM training staff
and will be around for a long time if we have our way. Also attending
the event was Robert L. Shaw, author of THE book on Air Combat.
Saturday included a missing man formation over the banquet to honor our
fallen heros. Sunday saw a formation photo shoot that included an L-29,
2 L-39's, one Yak-11, 2 Yak-52's, 2 Yak-50's, and a CJ. A full write up
on the event is forthcoming on the web site. There are dozens of
wonderful photos as well.
Also, the next evolution of the community is at hand. The Red Star
Aircraft Owners Association, or Red Star AoA is a concept that is
designed to promote Unity, Teamwork, and Safety for all Red Star
owners. This association will work in concert with the Yak Pilots
Associaton to promote all things Red Star and has the blessings of the
powers that be in the YPA. More details to follow....
Thanks to everyone for a great event and we look forward to a bright
future...
Cheers,
Barry
