Anyone missing a fuel cap? The FBO at Castle has a fuel cap in good
condition, but no one has claimed it. Please call Gemini directly
209-725-1455. Also they have a grey HGU-55 helmet that someone
apparently left behind.
A brief summary of Red Star West 2003:
According to any information we can find, this year's Red Star West was
the largest gathering of such aircraft ever. Here is the breakdown of
the over 70 aircraft that attended.

aircraft
This does not include the various spam cans that flew in over the
weekend to check things out.
Other than a horrendous T-storm that came out of nowhere on Thursday,
the weather was great and the flying and comraderie even better. Friday
saw the arrival of several jet trainers, and an enjoyable arrival by
Cary Venden in a USMC F-5E. Cary is a part of the ACM training staff
and will be around for a long time if we have our way. Also attending
the event was Robert L. Shaw, author of THE book on Air Combat.
Saturday included a missing man formation over the banquet to honor our
fallen heros. Sunday saw a formation photo shoot that included an L-29,
2 L-39's, one Yak-11, 2 Yak-52's, 2 Yak-50's, and a CJ. A full write up
on the event is forthcoming on the web site. There are dozens of
wonderful photos as well.
Also, the next evolution of the community is at hand. The Red Star
Aircraft Owners Association, or Red Star AoA is a concept that is
designed to promote Unity, Teamwork, and Safety for all Red Star
owners. This association will work in concert with the Yak Pilots
Associaton to promote all things Red Star and has the blessings of the
powers that be in the YPA. More details to follow....
Thanks to everyone for a great event and we look forward to a bright
future...
Cheers,
Barry

This means that the wiring in your airplane has been modified from stock.

That means they are wired in parallel since shutting off the engine involves
turning the switch physcially to 'on' in order to short the points in the mags.
This can be confusing since turning the engine 'on' involves turning the mag
switch 'off'. The logic is backwards.

Thanks for pointing that out Brian - I had it
backwards.
But if possible, my point continues; the only
differential setting that changes the condition is the
"off" setting of one of the mag switches.

Actually, now that I think about it, she's right. It is just a very
high speed suppository . More painful initially, but less suffering
over time....

ERNIE,I had same problem last fall. Drove me nuts trying to ring out wiring . Wish
I would have pulled off mag cap much sooner in the troubleshooting process.
I ran new wires from the front switch and completely removed the rear switch
from the system. Glad you found the problem and are up and running again.RON

Well turns out I had a busted point spring in my MAG. I was sure I had broken something
when I was installing a new radio, but it had nothing to do with me,
it was just Murphy rearing his ugly head. I did get to find out that my mag overide
switch does absolutely nothing though.
Does anyone have the point timing specs off hand, I cant find my manual that tells
me how many deg BTDC I'm supposed to set the break for.

Try metric screw and tool company. http://www.metricscrew-toolco.com/. You
may have to call them vs. using their web site to order.

I've got another question regarding my mag issue. Why would the breaker
spring break so prematurely? The engine has about 350 hours on it since new.
Should I be worrying about my other spring breaking anytime soon. We had
inspected the point gap about 6 weeks ago during annual, and there were no
signs that is was ready to go (not that we were really looking that closely
at the spring). The one thing I did notice when I removed the cap this time
was that there was about 10cc of oil pooled inside the mag housing just
under where the spring is. Could the rapid cooling effect of the oil
possibly splashing onto the spring have been a factor in its demise???? The
broken spring does not show any evidence of cooked oil on it so the theory
is far fetched. The plane is running fine, but now I keep worrying about the
other mag giving up the ghost while in flight. I have no idea if this one
broke in flight or after I landed.
