Not trying to pick a fight here, but since I altered my starting
technique to starter first, then mags, I have not had a single
kickback. I'm sure it could happen, but it hasn't. Any sound
explanations for this?

Well <sigh>,
If the Wx clears today, I'm headed out for my last pleasure flight in
good 'ole Gherky. I have agreed to a trade for an Interavia I-3. So
three years and over 400 hours of romance (mostly:) are coming to a
close. My preference was to sell it outright, but the market is so
slow/soft right now I just couldn't move it for straight cash. But cash
and an Unlimited capable aerobatic mount ain't a bad second option...
Her new home will be in Minneapolis...at Walt Fricke's home field, so at
least she'll have a friend in the neighborhood. I never did get to fly
Gherkin and the project side-by-side, but I'm hoping that will happen at
Oshkosh this year. Speaking of which, Jim Goolsby won the "when's
Barry's project gonna be finished" pool - he said OSH of last
year...he's only a year off. I believe it's time for a few on this list
to ante up! :)
Anyway, so I now get the "pleasure" of learning an outside snap
roll.....my eyes are aching already.
Cheers,
Barry

Flyers & friends,
Well, back at home. Had 379 e-mail messages. I hope you'll for give me if I
don't answer all. Just too many.
I was on the line for almost 3 weeks flying the B-17 and B-24 for the
Collings Foundation. You learn to love the 2 machines for their differences as
well
as their histories. Met many a veteran on both airplanes. One gentlemen with
79 missions in B-24s, before being shot down into jungles by a Tony fighter
in the Philippines. Of the crew only he and 3 others survived the crash. He
still writes to the Philippine nurse, in the guerrillas, who cared for their
injuries.
Bit of trivia. Did you know the B-24J (some of them) could carry external
4,000 lbs bombs on hard points between the fuselage and inboard engines?
Not only flying these treasures but doing a bit of maintenance too. Changing
out wheel rims, brakes, and tubes on the B-24, is a dirty, back braking job!
A casting that held pulleys for the Bomb bay doors, broke off one ear, which
cause one side on the Bomb bay inop. This became "my" job to repair. First,
its not quite possible to find a 58 year old part for this airplane. The
museum at Castle went into their B-24J to see if we could cannibalize that part,
but alas someone already had. Two stops later I had a local welding shop,
welded a large blob in place of the ear. We than filed it to shape. A little
zinc chromate and -- you can't tell the difference and she's mission ready.
The B-17 need a cylinder change also. Not once but twice.
Flying these airplanes are a chore. They are NOT easy to fly. In cross wind
the B-17 can be a bitch of bitches. The B-24 is not easy to taxie. With
graby brakes, you can easily roll the nose wheel off the rime. Rob Collings
admonished me for calling the B-24 a "*&#* )&@*
!" when I was having a particular
hard time because of the brakes. "Talk sweet to her, after all, she's an old
lady". A few minutes later he was turning the air blue on his side of the
cockpit.
But the people you meet. The vets are a class unto themselves.
Well, I've babbled to long. Happy Memorial Day folks. And God Bless
America.

Barry,
Which mags did you use and what setting? There are numerous flavors of
Rusky mags. Did your shower of sparks actually work? If so the engine
should fire without mags on.

Ante up? So how did a bet you made making a deadline turn into a pool?
Wasn't that last May (2002) you were touting? If I recall correctly,
there were numerous sharks that smelled easy money. Too many to pay so
maybe a round of pitchers may suffice. (Tsing Tao of course).
Anyway, Gherkin taught you how to fly so I expect to see a hot stick now
when you get to OSH.

Barry; I've seen the I-3 compete at US Nationals. You'll love it.
Outside? Outside?...I pant like a dog or a woman giving birth, but what ever
you do don't squeeze or hold your breath. Been there - done that. The city
of Tucson didn't have enough Tylenol for that headache! Congrats have fun,
be safe. Ricky B
