Fellow Warbird Drivers,
If there is enough interest, Sergei Boriak will make himself available to
give aerobatic instruction in your aircraft at MTW again this year. Sergei is a
very experienced, instructor and former coach of the US Aerobatic Team. Those
who took instruction with him last year benefited greatly from the experience.
Sergei would be available as early as Sat and Sun, and is flexible for the
dates of our MTW schedule.
His daily fees are:
$350-one pilot
$450-split between two pilots
$550- split between three or more pilots
His plane ticket, about $150 and hotel about $50/night
would be divided by all who took lessons. He will only come if he has people
signed up ahead of time.
Please respond to me, off list, and I will make the appropriate arrangements
if we have enough pilots sign up for lessons.
Regards,
Mike Filucci

Joe; Approximately how big is the new air filter?....is it something more than
I have seen on some other Cj's that is maybe 3" diameter and 2" thick? Mom used
to have something like that to keep cookies crisp. The dessicant turned red
when wet (spent) and was blue when dried out.
I am thinking about something like a one to two gallon capacity that would be filled
with silica gel or calcium chloride and could be taken home and dried out
in the oven and become rejuveniated. This would absorb dissolved moisture
in the air on the suction side of the compressor. Seems like everybody fights
moisture problems in their air systems and there should be a way to keep it out.

The latest pressure air filter on the CJ-6 incorporates silica gel bead
dessicants to help remove moisture. Beads should be rejuvanted/replaced
regularly.

of oil/moisture in the "snot" blowdown system. If I don't diligently
exhaust that system, then it finds its way into the air tank and associated
parts of the air system. Altho my repair for lack of diligence has been
limited to the filter and check valves; it crossed my mind: Why don't we
install a Desiccant/Dryer of significant size on the INTAKE to the Air
Compressor? That Desiccant/Dryer could be located between the firewall and
the cockpit bulkhead and piped to the compressor with Scat Tubing. Any
Ideas? rb

Hey gang,
Well, it seems like just yesterday I was watching Orville and Wilbur
make history with the first powered flight...actually, it was...I love
the Discovery Wings channel! Anyway, this year is a special year for us
aviator types and the Grand Daddy of 'em all is just around the corner.
In anticipation of this year's Airventure, I wanted to let everyone know
that "The Cockpit" has been updated at www.allredstar.com. If you are
planning on going to OSH/MTW this year (if you aren't, change your
mind!) you need to check it out as it has links to all the info right in
the article, including a VERY important reminder...
http://www.allredstar.com/The_Cockpit.asp
As I mention in the article I'm very much looking forward to a "rejoin"
with old friends and meeting our new comrades. One of the tools we've
provided on the site is the Flight Scheduling room which allows you to
post your dates and route of flight to OSH (and any other event, for
that matter!) so that others can contact you about joining up along the
way. Don't be bashful....hopefully this will be a useful/used tool for
y'all (I can say "y'all" 'cuz my momma's from Alabama). Looks like I'm
leaving SoCal on Tuesday the 29th to hopefully arrive on the 30th...I
don't wanna miss Bobby Younkin's twin Beech routine on Thursday!
Come hell or high water I'm going to be there with Panda-
monium....complete with the large baggage compartment to haul Craig's
beer!
See you at the Centennial Celebration!
Cheers,
Barry

Guys,
I'd resident about using the blue desiccant. The calcium chloride (more a
salt) stuff causes immediate corrosion to start in the aluminum body of the
dyer, and eventually eats though. This happened twice with me. Also it starts
rusting the gear and flap valves down stream. The silica gel works much better.
I had a local machine shop make a dryer body out of stainless steel. This
took care of the corrosion of the dryer body with the blue desiccant, but the
aluminum cap at each end started corroding even faster it seemed. I then
started using the silica gel that comes in the Russian packing crates and have
much
better results.
The CJ's come with two different filters or dyers. One is about 2" diameter
and maybe 2" long. It more a filter than a dryer. The other is about 2" in
diameter and about 6 or 7 inches long. This has felt filters at either end
with a desiccant between. It does take moisture out but not all of it and needs
to be changed often to be really effective.
You can never get all the water out. Make sure you drain the 'snot valves'
in front of the firewall and in the center section after each flight. This is
the best prevention. Also add air tool oil to you system often.
