    Subject: Paint Cost?
--> Yak-List message posted by: PSalter@aol.com I just started looking for a paint shop to personalize my Yak 52. I have had quotes from $6500. to $12000. It would seem since the Yak is about the size of a Cessna or Piper single, the cost would be the same. One fellow I spoke with, after looking at pictures on the Yak Pilots website commented about the Yak being the size of the T 28. I live just outside Houston, Texas and would rather have the plane painted within a couple of hours flight time from here. Any recommendations on a reputable shop and what should a paint job cost? Thanks in advance, Phil Salter 2504U

The actual painting is nothing. First I would not take my airplane to a painter who can't tell a T-28 size airplane from the 52. He obviously does NOT know airplanes. Most likely is an ex-auto painter. Also The controls should be removed during the prep work and painted separately. This means at least an A&P to do the work. The airplane must be absolutely clean. No dirt nor paint stripper left on any where. A lot of these paint shops employ kids from the local auto culture who don't give a shit about how clean your airplanes is. My advice is that you're better off paying as much as you can afford. A good paint job (useless you paint the thing pink) will add value to you airplane. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Mark Schrick" <schrick@pacbell.net> Phil, A really job shop in Phoenix Arizona area is JABS Aircraft Paint Specialists. They have done from straight paint jobs to wild graphics on a Turbine Legend. They are located on the Copperstate Airport grounds and just did a great job on a friends Yak 52W. Painted the Pitot to look like a 50 caliber machine gun. Looks great and very professional. Cost was between $8000 to $10,000 depend how much graphics you want. I am taking a plane to them later this month for paint and I live 600 miles away. Worth the flight and easy to jump on a jet from PHZ to anywhere home while they work on it. Give them a call or e-mail for more information: JABS Steve Hayes (520) 568-4334 trikpainter@cox.net Located on Airport (GPS A39) Phoenix Regional Airport Good luck they really do Show winning quality. --> Yak-List message posted by: "Yakjock" <Yakjock@msn.com> Does anyone use these now? A company that designs and installs these is located 45 minutes away in Eastern Oregon. I'm going to take my CJ over to run some tests with them. They are supposed to reduce stall speeds, increase slow speed maneuverability and aileron control - all without loss of cruise speed. When I saw the red Yak 3 "Barbarossa" at the Golden Gate fly in there was a bunch of VGs on it. Hal

    Subject: X-wind from Holland
--> Yak-List message posted by: robert de vries <redyak52@compuserve.com> Folks, Situaton: Landing with a 2 m/s HW and 6 m/s XW comp.from right side. 1)Flare, rollout; park;beer;no problem! 2)Flare, T-D; wave-off>>close to problem;remember the amount of L-rudd. one needs on a -52 to keep the acft straight on the rwy in no X-wind cond.??? Now try the same with a -say- touch&go in 8 m/s X-wind from the right, after letting the speed drop to raise flaps and recompose during rollout. Mayby in this situation when not aborting touch&go timely (enough rwy remain?) one veeres off right rwy.edge . So that is why the DOOSAF uses a 6 m/s X-wind comp. This is also what Gennady E. tought me back in the UK @ Halfpenny Green. I have to admit; I landed in more than this; but considering the above I have second thoughts about the DOOSAF wisdom, and come to respect it more. Why do we continiously try to 're-invent' the DOOSAF procedures and maintenance practices; those people have safely operated the -52 for zillions of hours. So let's not make all the mistakes again they have already made for us (and put in a book for us to learn from.) Robert de Vries. But the words "must not exceed" are used > when stating the crosswind velocity of 6 m/sec. Then don't fly when the crosswind component exceeds 6m/s. As I recall, the phrase "demonstrated crosswind capability" was used in an earlier post. Not having the Yak-52 manual I won't comment beyond that. -- " -------------------- End Original Message --------------------
