I would start looking for vapor in the fuel system somewhere. Is fuel
pressure normal at the input to the carburator.

Possibly your primer is leaking or a carburator problem causing an over rich
mixture. The head wind may be forceing air into the air intake and is enough
to overcome the over rich condition. A surging engine is a typical symptom
where you forget to lock your primer and run at low RPM.
Just a guess.

Frank,
I've experience this a number of time also. Wind does have an effect on
these big bladed props. I wouldn't call it surging so much, but the next time
note how the surging might accrue with the wind gusts. I would describe more
like "roughness." I did not notice this with the thin blade props when I had the
HS6 in the airplane.

You may want to check the state of tour automatic mixture diaphragm. If it
is leaking then you will loose mixture as altitude increases. Of course this
only applies if you have a 52 or a CJ with M14P fitted.

I was contemplating taking time off and just flying up to MTW in my CJ in order
to finish getting my FAST card. I just read the schedule on the YPA website and
it seems that the focus will be on practice sessions for already FAST rated
pilots who will be flying in the show, with less emphasis on training for non
card holders.
During S&F there seemed to be a lack of qualified back seaters to accomodate all
the new guys, and then the SE clinic turned into an instructers clinic. If
MTW is not going to emphasize training for non card holders, then when are we
supposed to get our wings?
I could have had my card long ago using local NATA guys who I regularly fly with,
but I've been telling them that I need to fly to YPA standards with YPA pilots
and planes.

YPA FAST Management team,
Erine is bring up a good point.
The TRARON (CAF) group this year did something different that I believed
worked well and could easily be adapted to the YPA program. It was a buddy
program where a back seat instructor is assigned to a new student and helps
them get scheduled, fills out flight reports (like at ALL REDSTAR) and keep
the new student motivated, on schedule, focused and progressing towards
their goal of becoming a WINGMAN.
TRARON (CAF training wing) had 26 students this year with 9 getting patched
in several days of flying. Most students averaged 5 sorties a day. Some
students that didn't get patched are going through local YPA lead groups and
working towards their WINGMAN patch as we speak.
Something to think about but it is up to all of us to help the new students
meet their goal. The buddy program may help.
Only a suggestion but one we should look into.

Jon W. Aldrich
Oct. 31, 1935 -- June 17, 2003
Jon William Aldrich, 67, of Groveland died June 17 at Doctors Medical Center, Modesto, from
injuries suffered in an auto accident.
Mr. Aldrich was a native of Fullerton and lived in Groveland 24 years. He was self-employed
in aviation 30 years and owned Jon Aldrich Aviation Antiques, one
of the most active air memorabilia businesses in the United States. He started
in the early 1970s in Southern California selling antique propellers, flight
helmets, goggles, leather jackets and other items.
He moved his family and business to Pine Mountain Lake Airport, where his business
was a few steps from his house and hangar containing a 1947 Bonanza and 1933
Waco UIC biplane. Over the years he bought and sold items such as a pair of
gloves worn by Charles Lindbergh while he was an air mail pilot; a still-crated
spare propeller for Douglas World Cruisers; and a medal awarded to Wiley Post
in 1933. He collected and sold these antiques to aircraft historians, owners,
museums and people who just wanted to have a piece of aviation history.
He first soloed in 1961, logging over 5,100 hours in such aircraft as a Curtis
Jenny, PA-12, Baby Ace, Funk, Navion, Breezy, Bonanza and his beloved Wacos. He
ran a business giving biplane rides in his Waco UPF-7 and in hot air balloons.
He was currently at work on a 1931 Waco F-2 project.
He was a lifetime member of the Experimental Airplane Association and the Airplane
Owners and Pilots Association; held commercial pilot ratings of single-engine
land and sea, multi-engine land and free balloons. He also served for many
years as a member of the Airport Land Use Committee and Tuolumne County Air Sheriff
Volunteer Squadron, and as an FAA-appointed Air Safety Counselor.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Aldrich of Groveland; son, Curtiss Ried Aldrich
of Jamestown; brother, James Aldrich of Soulsbyville; and one grandchild.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no commercial service in MTW. Appleton
is most likely the nearest. I believe it is only 1hr drive away. Cars in
Appleton are difficult to reserve, but there always were some available when I
rented in the past.
I think your idea of taking the CJ is better.
Cheers.

Thanks Dan,
The hotel is the real biggie at the moment. I'd love to fly the CJ up, but I
would realistically need about 10 days off in order to be able to allow for
weather.

Ernie,
While we do have a strong commitment to the OSH warbird airshow this year, it
looks to me like we will have a good opportunity to get training done there.
Yes, we did have a shortage of instructors at S&F this year. At OLU we had a
surplus of instructors; at Red Star we had a reasonable balance. As we continue
to train more pilots the situation will continue to improve.
There is no "YPA standard" per se, there is a FAST standard with specifics
relevant to our aircraft addressed in our manual, ground school, and flight
training. There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to get training with the
NATA instructors in your area. The FAST program specifically recognizes the
reciprocity between the signatories with regard to training and checkrides. I have
trained and given checkrides to pilots from other signatory organizations
(T-34 Assn. & NATA) and have not seen any significant differences in the way we
all operate.
Regards,
Mike

Mark,
The buddy approach sounds like an interesting method, we'll give it a try at
MTW this year. The 5 sorties a day is a little questionable, depending on the
student. Most students I have flown with, especially those who are brand new
to form flying, tend to peak out at three training sorties a day. The training
tends to become counterproductive after that.
One of the big advantages of the organizations that have been around for many
years (NATA, T-34, CAF, etc.) is that they have a large contingent of
instructors to draw from. Of course, they also have a much larger membership--NATA
has over 1000 members verses our 300.
Thanks for the suggestion, I think it could be very productive. I'll let you
know how it works out.
Mike

What a coincidence. My A&P just got a call from an established paint

looking for referrals because things have got a little slow. They have
done work for Frank Borman amongst others. There is another one in Big
Spring, Texas called A&A Aircraft Refinishers. I also know of a large
paint shop in Uvalde, Texas called Jim Miller's. It does everything up
to Gulfstreams and warbirds and seems to do great work. Ranger Aviation
in San Angelo seems like a fine shop when I've passed through for fuel.

Greetings Yakers.
Again this year, I am OSH/MTW bound. I am planning to arrive in MTW on
Sunday the 27th and have a room at the Super 8. We (there are 2 of us) are looking
for someone who would be willing to share a rental car until Friday since we
are spending the weekend in OSH.
Let me know.

Mostly people do not know that there is a very easy way to back up emails in OUTLOOK EXPRESS, just down load the programme found at www.yakuk.com/links.htm this is the only way I know of saving all emails. (that's why I provide the link)One way if using win 98 is to copy the applications file under windows, just copy it to another file, then when you need to restore, just rename the existing file and past the original in its place. But.... this does not work in XP I believe.
Use the above mentioned programme it helped me greatly when moving data from one
pc to another via external hard drive.
just a helpful thought passed on I hope.
cheers.

The context of Bud's comments to me were in the "don't do something
risky of you don't have to" category. Specifically, we were talking
about spinning -52's. Yes, Bud's name is Neal, so it could very well be
the same person. I'm sure many people on this list know Bud (Bud--are
you there?). Maybe he can speak for himself--his comments, especially
about Yaks--would no doubt be instructive.
Lots of good pilots have been killed doing spins, in "spinnable"
airplanes. See Gene Beggs et al. I'm not advocating spin abstinence,
and I completely agree with you, Rick. Get instruction, be careful,
don't be stupid about risks.
