The head wind may be forceing air into the air intake and is enough to overcome the over rich condition. A surging engine is a typical symptom where you forget to lock your primer and run at low RPM. Just a guess. If it is leaking then you will loose mixture as altitude increases. Of course this only applies if you have a 52 or a CJ with M14P fitted. I just read the schedule on the YPA website and it seems that the focus will be on practice sessions for already FAST rated pilots who will be flying in the show, with less emphasis on training for non card holders. During S&F there seemed to be a lack of qualified back seaters to accomodate all the new guys, and then the SE clinic turned into an instructers clinic. If MTW is not going to emphasize training for non card holders, then when are we supposed to get our wings? I could have had my card long ago using local NATA guys who I regularly fly with, but I've been telling them that I need to fly to YPA standards with YPA pilots and planes. The TRARON (CAF) group this year did something different that I believed worked well and could easily be adapted to the YPA program. It was a buddy program where a back seat instructor is assigned to a new student and helps them get scheduled, fills out flight reports (like at ALL REDSTAR) and keep the new student motivated, on schedule, focused and progressing towards their goal of becoming a WINGMAN. TRARON (CAF training wing) had 26 students this year with 9 getting patched in several days of flying. Most students averaged 5 sorties a day. Some students that didn't get patched are going through local YPA lead groups and working towards their WINGMAN patch as we speak. Something to think about but it is up to all of us to help the new students meet their goal. The buddy program may help. Only a suggestion but one we should look into. Yes, we did have a shortage of instructors at S&F this year. At OLU we had a surplus of instructors; at Red Star we had a reasonable balance. As we continue to train more pilots the situation will continue to improve. There is no "YPA standard" per se, there is a FAST standard with specifics relevant to our aircraft addressed in our manual, ground school, and flight training. There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to get training with the NATA instructors in your area. The FAST program specifically recognizes the reciprocity between the signatories with regard to training and checkrides. I have trained and given checkrides to pilots from other signatory organizations (T-34 Assn. & NATA) and have not seen any significant differences in the way we all operate. The 5 sorties a day is a little questionable, depending on the student. Most students I have flown with, especially those who are brand new to form flying, tend to peak out at three training sorties a day. The training tends to become counterproductive after that. One of the big advantages of the organizations that have been around for many years (NATA, T-34, CAF, etc.) is that they have a large contingent of instructors to draw from. Of course, they also have a much larger membership--NATA has over 1000 members verses our 300. Thanks for the suggestion, I think it could be very productive. I'll let you know how it works out.
