Drew,
I did not see the briefing at OSH. Reading through the notes I was struck by
the lack of mention of aerobatics in the document. Now I know that you
intend to cover this at clinics as happened when Sergi was at MTW, why not
say so. It gives the impression of a formation only group which I know is
not your intention.
Personally I have no real interest in doing mass formations but Ii would
like my organization help me through the ACE and performance hoops
Hope this helps
Gus

Just one more category to consider to increase the diversity.
There are a lot of other types that are fitting the M14P engine, Pitts S12,
Sherpa etc etc (Pitts S12, what a plane I WANT ONE) Being a member or an
associate member of ARSAOA would be of use if I were behind one of these
engines as there is information in ARSAOA that would be useful for me if I
had one of these aircraft.

Also,
I've recruited a local ACE who flys "Wardog" (John, T-6), really nice guy to
attend for an ACE program brief. We also have waivered airspace and thus I
believe he can conduct an evaluation at ARS 04. He does the airshow circuit
for a living so if ARS falls on his show, he will have to pass.
If anyone has an alternate who would like to attend ARS, please pass it on,
early May 2004.

Just thought I'd add my comments on a few subjects that are near and
dear to me.
First, the Horizon tach is a good piece of equipment. As Frank
mentioned it takes a little getting used to but provides much more info
than a normal tach. Since it senses pulses off of the P-leads it is
very easy to install (4 wires total) and is solid state. Throwing out
that tach generator is a nice feeling as well.
++++++++++++++++++++
Drew and I travelled to OSH together and the vast majority of our time
was spent discussing the various aspects of the YPA, his transitional
brief, and the vision for the future. Most of you know that I have been
deeply involved in the community from the time I bought my first CJ
nearly 4 years ago. In that time I have logged almost 400 hours in the
CJ, been two OSH 3 times, Red Star twice, SnF once, and attended about a
half dozen other various formations clinics. I, like the rest of us,
want to see our organization be all that it can be. Drew's passion and
concern for the community leaves little room for doubt about his
motivations. In fact we have discussed and agreed that I will be the
Event Director for All Red Star next year so as to avoid any perceived
conflict of interest between the two entities. Bottom line is this
community deserves more than it is getting right now and the only way we
are going to get to where we should be is by reinforcing our strengths
and addressing our weaknesses. Drew's vision for the future of this
community will go a long way in getting us there.
+++++++++++++++++++
As for Gus's comments about adding to the diversity of the group, that's
what Red Star AoA and All Red Star are about. As many of you know, I
just acquired an Interavia I-3 and am involved in aerobatics. You can
be sure I'll do what I can to get the Acro mounts a place in the sun
within Red Star AoA. :)
+++++++++++++++++++
Drew mentioned an ACE evaluator in our local area that will be available
at All Red Star 2004. We have another one as well. Eddie Andreini, who
performed at OSH in his Stearman this year, also flies a Yak-3 in
airshows. He is scheduled to be at RS 2004 also and I will contact him
to see if he will make himself available for evals - he wants to use the
box too! :) It is my understanding that ACE evaluations require
waivered airspace and we will have that at RS 2004. Also, for those of
you wanting a better understanding of the ACE process, we have a few
among us that are ACE qualified and I'm sure would be happy to discuss
the process.
Cheers,
Barry

Now why would you want to totally drown out the beautiful sound of that
engine? In my experience, passive headsets work fine eliminating just
enough of that wonderful sound to keep my ears from bleeding. Round engine
noise is part of the total Yak experience, just like pulling blades, adding
oil, figuring out the air system, etc. Besides a slight hearing impairment
can be a real advantage at home and at the office.

Aubrey: Don't know exactly how they will work with your Yak, but I LOVE
my two Lightspeed ANR headsets. They are far and away the most
comfortable and LIGHTWEIGHT of any that I have ever worn, the battery
box is much better than any other I have tried, (just uses two common
AA's), and the noise canceling is excellent.
I bought my first one at Oshkosh several years ago, had Dave
Clarks in the 180. Tried the Lightspeed on the way home, and WAS NOT
IMPRESSED. "Humph", was my comment. Then I put my Clarks back on.
TORE THEM OFF IN A HURRY, and put the Lightspeeds back on! THEN I was
REAL impressed! Been wearing them ever since. Like you, too many years
of enjoying the noise.

"Buddy System", as it used to be called in the old corps,
Lead and Wingman by another name. The recent tragic loss of
Wright and the Hughes replica seems to be part of a
continuing story of aircraft and pilots lost on the way back
home from Oshkosh while solo.
Instead of my usual solo "crossing" from Florida to the
North, and vice-versa; I flew up as "Pappy's" GIB and back
as his wingman for OSH. It was a much more enjoyable trip
than my April "crossing" and probably a safer one with two
sets of eyes on the sky and ears on the comm, etc. Mutual
support, it works, combat tested also. Did I mention that
there are fun parts too?

Noise canceling headsets greatly reduce the low-frequency engine and prop noise
so you can hear all the other stuff you really need to hear, like that pneumatic
system leak, excessive valve lash, or an exhaust leak. Also, a good headset
reduces hearing loss. There is no upside to hearing loss.

Per Drew's The MTW/OSH Transitional Brief.........
These are MANDATORY items if you fly in an association funded, managed,
sponsored event or flight.
1. Parachutes
2. Nomex Flight Suit
3. No open toed shoes
Drew, yaksters;
As far as I know the Yak group is the only group I know of that requires
#2 of your requirements....ie, a Nomex Flight Suit in order to be
included in All Red Star activities. What's up with that? I understand
the safety implications but then why do other fast groups not require
it? Fer cryin' out loud...we're not involved in combat activities here!
If it's an image kind of thing then you are in fact being exclusive.
I'm open to your reasoning on this issue.
