Andrew;
Clean, re-gap, and/or replace your plugs, clean your distributor caps of
any and all black deposits and replace "ALL" of your ignition wires with
modern, silicone covered wires and I'm willing to bet your problem goes
away. Mine actually had water inside the rubber part of the outer wire
covering and the main leads to the mag were cracking.

I have a re-occuring issue with my M-14 hesitating in
flight, usually just after takeoff and on the second
leg of a flight.
This has happened on four occasions now, usually as
mentioned after takeoff after the engine has run for a
while on a previous flight. Also, this usually
happens when I adjust the power to a cruise setting
from take off settings.
That being said, the last time this happened I was
about 20 minutes into the flight and in a rain shower.
I had set the power to cruise previously just after
take off and at a safe altitude.
I don't know if the precipitation was part of the
problem, has anyone else experienced this?
Dougherty, Andrew

CJ'ers with small (older) cowl bushings.
My solution was to buy a sheet of 1/2" thick Neoprene sheet
from Aircraft Spruce and stamp out disks using my Harbour
Freight tool, Made In China. I then drilled out the center
and pressed in a bronze bushing reamed to fit the pins. The
hard part was pressing bushings into place using clamps and
WD-40 to lube as I made the bushings a little oversise so
that they would expand INSIDE the curved area in the middle.
Been working just fine and I made sets for the upper and
lower too, although I finally had to machine larger bearing
holders as the thin Chinese uppers tend to crack.

Thanks Frank,
I spoke to George and Cliff at Gesoco and they
repsonded with the same advice regarding the spark
plug leads, said I needed about 60' of new lead wires
and about a day to pull it through the engine.

Subject: | Mag Problem Revisited |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Jon Boede" <jon@email.net>
I had said a while back that the Russian Guy at the airport and his
suggested fix cured my airplane.
I'd spoken too soon, but I had gone and taken the airplane to a Real
Mechanic and was going to report back here with the results once it's
fixed.
Alas, he's scratching his head, too.
He's able to duplicate the problem... basically the airplane hesitates or
skips more on the #1 mag, and more during particular power settings (1860
rpm seems to be a favorite).
He says it may (or may not) cure the problem to turn the primer to the
"prime" position... he can't get it to hesitate consistently enough to
really say that cures it but he's run it a whole lot more with the primer
closed than with it open so he's not so confident about it "fixing" it.
He did say that a little puff of smoke comes out the right exhaust stack
whenever it hesitates. This is on #1... there's no report of a puff of
smoke from the #2 because it does it on #2 so rarely that nobody was
watching at the time. It seems like un-burned fuel suddenly igniting.
Everything everybody on the list has suggested has been done excepting for
replacing the condenser, the points, and the plug wires (although the
harness did get filled with WD-40).
The current thinking is that I've got a plug wire from #1 that's nearly
gone bad and a wire from #2 that's on it's way, but not as far gone as the
one from #1.
He's putting a lead tester on the wires around lunch time today and
hopefully that will show something.
*** Neither of us has ever replaced spark plug wires on a CJ before.
Anybody got any advice on that? Suggestions? Is it easier to pull the
whole thing off, re-run all the wires on a bench and put it back on? ***
I've been up in Boston for a couple of weeks now and my time here is
drawing to a close... so in a few days, I'm not just going to be grounded,
I'm going to be stuck. :-(
Thanks,
Jon

Craig,
Had we known then what we know now you could have simply bought the correct
(but larger dia) bushing from me and turned them down on a lathe and pressed
them in and been done with a min of time and expense. If the larger dia
bushing is turned down to .003 larger than the ID of the ring bracket, and
the bushing is frozen and the ring bracket is heated to about 500 to 600
degrees F, everything goes together smoothly. When temps normalize
everything is firmly held in place. Its quick, clean, and done with a
minimum of steps. As I recall, Terry's took me about 1 hour each to do the
job.
Always yakin,
Doug Sapp

To the many of you who have responded off list to the issue of radium in our knobs
and controls. Please remain in the holding pattern a bit longer. I have
discovered some interesting facts from folks in the biz who actually have the
credentials and have a working knowledge of this stuff. I would ask all those
interested in this topic to hang on for a week or two more, until we can discover
for sure what our risk really is.
There is an outside chance that many aircraft may in fact not have radium at all,
but there seems to be many earlier aircraft that did in fact use this material
in their controls. And yes, I am getting together a set of knobs for patterns,
and yes I think that it might be a good idea to change the knob shape to
gear and flap at the same time.
Stand by.........
Always yakin,
Doug Sapp

My CJ is a 1968 and two separate Geiger counters made everyone backup.
Steady hiss on all knobs. Yak 52 in the next hangar did not make a single
click.

Yak-Meisters,
I'm looking for at least one set of M9F magneto points. I'd buy 2 sets if available.
Anybody out there know where I can find these?
I've checked all the usual sources.
Thanks!
