Burt Rutan says that if the west coast had been discovered first and the
U.S. populated toward the east that no one would live east of Denver.
Do you want to go on record as opposing Burt Rutan's opinion?

Actually, they would have taken one glance at what existed east
of Reno, and ran back to where they came from! No one in their right
mind would have ever attempted a continental crossing with that at the
START of their trip.

Subject: | October 4-5 fly-in in Illinois |
--> Yak-List message posted by: John Alber <john@johnalber.com>
The medium range forecast calls for a large high pressure area to dominate the
east and midwest October 4 and 5--next weekend. Should be great flying.
If you're looking for a place to fly, then head for Greenville, Illinois (GRE)
45 miles NE of STL. We're having AIRstravaganza that weekend and we welcome all
warbirds. Let me know of your plans to fly-in with a Yak or other warbird and
we'll cover your fuel (sorry, we don't have much for appearance fees).
AIRstravaganza focuses on ride hopping and interesting aircraft. If you want to
ride in a DC-3 or Beech 18 or R-44 or trike ultralight or gyrocopter or powered
parachute or other interesting aircraft or see aircraft like a B-25, then by
all means show up. The event is usually well attended, both as a fly-in and
as a vintage car show (on Sunday).
See www.airstravaganza.com for details.

Subject: | "Eastern" Red Star Event |
--> Yak-List message posted by: Jeff Linebaugh <jefflinebaugh@earthlink.net>
Folks,
It is true...I did volunteer to try to get another Red Star Event going for folks
on the Eastern half of the country. I know there would be support. When we
tried to get a "little" gathering together last year in Selma, AL it ended up
that about 35 airplanes were scheduled to show up...mother nature encrouched
though and we had to cancel.
It is my opinion that a central location would serve the most members. Rather
than have two events on the far ends of the country, we should pick a more central
site. The two largest cargo carriers both located their major hubs as close
as possible to the "demographic" center of the country to reach the most people
for the least expense... Of course Memphis is one of those hubs.
The old Memphis NAS in Millington TN could replicate the Red Star event model well
with convenient facilities, airspace, and lodgings. As Drew has mentioned
though, this would take a huge amount of effort. I have seen this on a smaller
scale with the two events I have planned. Putting this event together would
be a FULL TIME job. I simply cannot and will not do it without major help and
division of tasks.
For those who have not attended a Red Star event, there simply is not a better
medium to enjoy your airplanes. Traveling a few hundred miles is a very small
price to pay for quite possibly the best time of your life!

Gus,
Regardless if there are other FL events, these events are not anywhere near
the equivalent of a Red Star gathering. Typically the one you are speaking
of is in conjunction with Sun and Fun. The location needs to "mutually
inconvenient to all".

Subject: | Wing Access Holes |
--> Yak-List message posted by: PSalter@aol.com
I am nearing the last steps toward finishing my paint job on my Yak 52 and
have a question concerning the access holes in the trailing edge of the wing.
Do I need to cover them and if so what is the process? My understanding
currently is that they do not need to be covered but could slightly effect my
airspeed. Seems to me the holes would effect the roll rate. When I bought this
aircraft, only one wing had covers and duct tape was used.
