Last week I told you about my air leak problem. A. Dennis,Mark Jefferies,
Jill and Carl,Mike DuPont and several more have been a great help in trouble
shooting the problem. I found it. It was so simple I overlooked the obvious.
I knew the leak had to be internal to the system because I have touched
everything else. After reviewing the drawings I realized that I had
overlooked the one-way valve on the firewall that prevents pressure from
going to the SNOT bottle and compressor when the engine is shut down. The
leak was at that valve, leaking through the SNOT bottle, past the valve at
the output of the compressor and into the compressor. I should have noticed
it, because over that past few weeks I remember opening the SNOT valve after
landing. Later I opened it again and it had pressure on it. That should have
been my first sign that I was developing a leak at the one-way valve. The up
side to this problem is, I have checked every fitting and found several
small leaking. Live and learn. Thanks for all the suggestions and help, they
made me think.

Contact George Coy at Gesoco in VT. 802-868-5633. George now has the
rights to build the Carl Schels designed aux fuel tank that fits behind and
wraps around the rear seat. It holds approximately 14.5 gallons and should
give you about 1 hour additional flight time. It is non-intrusive into the
wing (very important) and the only parts that have to be removed to install
the tank are the rear seat and the left wing root panels where the pump and
regulator are installed. The tank in plumbed into the flexible hose coming
from the left main fuel tank to the T fitting under the front seat. A small
custom fitted panel with a red light which indicates the pump is operating,
toggle switch and circuit breaker are mounted just above the primer pump.
The fuel in the aux tank is manually pumped through the flexible hose
previously mentioned. Total weight for the installation is only 18 pounds.
The tank is welded aluminum.
This installation is the best solution that we have to date for aux fuel in
the 52. Email me off list if you'd like to see a couple of photos of the
tank George builds and sells. adsavar@gte.net

All,
Since my employment went into disarray over two years ago, my financial
situation has become increasingly dire to the point where I have not been
able to fly for over a year. It has become increasingly difficult for me to
read about you all enjoying the thing I can no longer do, therefore I am
going to unsubscribe from this list and go away until I can afford to think
about flying again.
You are a great group and I wish you all the success you deserve.

Soyuz, building a rocket, putting a man in a capsule, copied or not, and
tossing him around the world takes a lot of energy and planning. No one in
Western Europe has tried it yet. Heck, it would be a feat even if they just
borrowed our spare parts and put together and launched an Atlas/Mercury.
Don't forget Al, they built their own launch vehicle. So, my hat's off to
them. It is nice to see someone new trying to get into space.

megaton warhead in suborbital flight from Asia to North America? As I
recall the original use for the Atlas and the Titan-II/III were to deliver
"packages" to our "friends" in the Soviet Union. We didn't build those
vehicles just for the Mercury and Gemini missions.

Hi all
Found an interesting publication in a local bookshop today - "The
International Directory of Military Aircraft, 2000/2001". (You can find
ths book and pictures on Amazon quite easily too). I was quite surprised
to see it listed Lithuania with 20 Yak52s, and Bulgaria with 10 Yak52s -
currently active in service (2001).
Anyone know where else they are in service and how accurate, if at all,
these figures are?
Thanks
Stuart

Russ,
I notice that you are a member of the YPA, now RPA, with a renewal due in
the 4th quarter of 2003 - we are going to a new website with a members login
structure at www.flyredstar.org. This site will become fully functional
later this month.
Although I know it is difficult reading about flying when a person, for
whatever reason, cannot actively participate in their own flying, on behalf
of the association your membership is renewed for 2004/2005, please
attend/volunteer/join in the events and web content activity where ever you
like or can - We need everyone!

This was my e-mail to Bushi Cheng.
- - - - - - - - - - - -
Mr. Bushi Cheng and Mrs. Fan
A number of our members and CJ-6 owners have noticed the name "Petrel" in
advertisement about the CJ-6 aircraft.=A0 Could you tell me where this name=20comes
from and what significance it means to the Chinese people as to aircraft.=A0
We were first under the impression the Chinese name " Chujiao" meant
"teacher."=A0 I now understand 'Chujiao" is shorten from "Chuji jiaolianji"=20which
means
"basic training aircraft".=A0 Is that true?
Is the "Petrel" name for the aircraft like what we here in the USA would a
call 'popular name'?=A0 Example - a Piper J-3 is call a "Cub" or the North
American P-51 is called the "Mustang".
To us a "Petrel" is small sea bird.=A0 Is that the same for the Chinese people?

This was Bushi reply.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dear Jim,
I received the "Warbird B-25 special section" and your letters enclosed.
Recently, I had a long time business trip, which took almost a whole month,=20and
I have just come back to Shanghai yesterday. During the time I was out of
Shanghai, in an event I met a pilot friend who attended the 2003 Oshkosh
"Flyin". He told me that in Oshkosh, he saw there was a magazine July's issue
having
articles about Cj-6. I didn't know what did he mean until I read the
magazine you sent me. I am so glad to read your letters and the articles in the
magazine.
Today I received your E-mail. Your understanding about the origine of
the name "CJ" is quite right. As for "Petrel", it is a popular name just the
same as "Mustung" or "Wildcat" for the US fighters. Anyhow, airplanes for
civil uses are not suitable to have names of fierce beast, and be better to have
names of milder animals. There was a Soviet Antonove designed twine engine
propeller driven argricultual airplane having the name "Little bee", I believe
the designer use the name to mean the airplane is small but nimble in its
flight. Nowadays, there is a series of autra-lights called "Honeybee" flying in
China. Maybe the name denotes their lightness and small size.
"Petrel" is a kind of small seabird in Chinese also. In Chinese
language, Petrel is literally called "sea swallow", because its size, shape=20and
style of flight are very like swallows". Giving this to an airplane had the same
intention as "Little Bee" to mean the nimbleness of its flight. Besides,
there is a prose poetry named "Petrel" very popular in China, writen by a Soviet
writer Gorgy. It described the flight of petrels when the thunderstorms
coming soon:"above the surging sea, petrels dive and climb steeply, like black
lightnings, hailing loudly, 'Let the storm come even fiercer!'" Therefore,=20in
Chinese common understanding, petrel often means a high spirite of struggle
against unfavorable environment, having a widerly praised heroic nature. And
thirdly, CJ has a "seagull"type wing that makes it suitble to be named as a=20kind
of
seabird.
I am very glad to discuss the question with you.
Thank your again for your Magazine and letters. Yaxi says Hi to
Dede, and my best wishes to you and your family.
Bushi Cheng

Also,
A Yak 55 an the British Nationals, I believe, had a control restriction
during a lomcovak it was discovered to be a 10p piece (same size as a
quarter) almost cut in two my the bell crank under the pilots seat.
The only reason that I mention all this, apart from the accident on Friday,
is that one of the best reasons for wearing a flight suit that I know of is
to keep all that crap away from the controls.

A previous accident in England, the results are in, CHECK FOR LOOSE
ARTICLES. It seems strange that they do not emphasis this in the
recommendations.

Please slap the bottom of your tail cone to check for loose articles. If you
hear any noise clean it out before flying.

I flew my Yak-50 for the first time today in 3 months. It just came out of the
shop. I found three foreign objects in the fuselage including a screwdriver.
Can't blame the mechanics. While it may not be their job to leave stuff there.
It's OURS to find it. Bak Yakin!

Yakksters;
You're rudder cable may be acting like a saw! If you own a YAK-52 I
suggest you pull your front seat and look at the bottom rear area of the
cockpit around where the fuel lines run over the rudder cables. Make
sure your rudder cables aren't touching the fuel lines in this area.
During routine maintenance it's easy to bend one of these fuel lines so
that they come in contact with your rudder cables. You probly won't even
know you've done it!!
If you've ever worked in the front cockpit area without the seat in the
airplane then I STRONGLY suggest you do this quick check.
Good Luck!
Frank
