lots of crud in them and the balls will be out of round and not re sealing.
good luck.

I just installed an airwolf filter on my yak 52w. The conversion to metric
fitting was aided by a referral from the folks at airwolf.

I'm making a simple change to the inspection panel under my left horizontal.
Instead of clear, we're just replacing the screws with those 1/4 turn fasteners.
So that panel will be as easy to remove as the "avionics" panel up on the front
right.
Another friend made an insightful recommendation .. ..

Some time back someone posted an article on a 50 amp alternator that fit the M14P.
If memory serves they also indicated that by changing something the alternator
could be converted to a 100 amp alternator. I'd appreciate feedback on
this or other ideas folks may have for a 50 plus amp alternator. I am aware that
B&C has one .
Also, I am planning on installing HID landing lights. Anyone have ideas on good
ones to use and where I can source them?
Thanks for the help.

As well, I inspect my tail secton and other areas regularly and have
also found not metalic objects, ruling out the use of magnets.

am sure he can give you the low down on the props and engine.

I have a 10 amp B & C alternator on my Housai and it works fine. Steve Culp
told me he had placed a 50 amp on it initially and had some problems. I have
2 motorcycle batteries in the plane and I suspect it was just too much
amperage. Make sure that you use their solid state voltage regulator with
it. If you go with the 50 amp I would also purchase their overvoltage
protection as well.
Good Luck

Hal,
I have been flying with the B&C 35amp alternator for over three years now
with flawless. It come with a stat-of-the-art external regulator and the
whole thing weighs in at 7.5lbs (!). By the time you yank out the heavy
generator and old regulator/filter assys, you end up at least 25lbs lighter
on the nose.
Although possible, I am not aware of B&C having a 50amp unit. There was an
alternator with internal regulator (out of some commercial truck that was
adapted to the M-14P) floating around but I have no specifics.

Dear Yakinators........
OK, I'm gonna complain a little. I've bought three sets of new tires for
my 52 in the last year. I've done maybe 120 hours flying in that time.
The tires are from Desser and they have got to be the softest compound
tires I've ever seen. OK, so the first set have worn prematurely due to
over aggressive braking, I'll grant that. But the two subsequent sets of
tires I've treated very gently yet they have also worn out way too fast.
I realize Desser is the EXCLUSIVE supplier of US made tires but they are
using way too soft a compound in the rubber for my liking. It's got to
be a planned obsolescence kind of thing.....they can get away with doing
it because nobody else supplies tires for our YAK-52's!
I've heard the Russian tires are tough as nails. "Run em' until the
cords start showing" I've been told! I'd like to get a couple of sets.
Anybody have a supplier?
By-the-way, Desser will re-cap your worn tires. They use a slightly
harder compound when they do it and the tire lasts longer but they are
still wayyyy too soft with a wayyyy too short a lifespan in my
estimation.
Original Russian tires anyone?

You really can't Hal. The current rating of the alternator is primarily defined
by the size wire used in the stator. A 100A stator probably won't fit in the
same housing. You might be able to squeeze a 70A stator into a 50A case if
they make one. You would also need to install larger diodes.

I didn't think B&C had anything that large.

Lopresti makes HID landing-light upgrades for spam cans. Do you have a source
for 28V HID lights?

The motorcycle batteries will just take as much as they need. They should work
just fine. OTOH, if the alternator fails you won't have power for very long.

The alternator regulator/controller from B&C has over voltage protection built-in.
It also has temperature compensation to prevent overcharging during the summer
and undercharging in the winter. This is a really useful feature.
