--> Yak-List message posted by: Matt Dralle <dralle@matronics.com>
Dear Listers,
This year's List Fund Raiser was pleasantly successful and I want to thank
everyone that so generously made a Contribution to support the continued
operation and upgrade of these Lists! Below you will find the complete
list of this year's Contributors. Its these great guys that make it all
possible! All of the List members owe these special people a debt of
gratitude.
I would also like to thank Andy Gold of the Builder Bookstore (
http://www.buildersbooks.com ) for again this year providing free and
substantially discounted merchandise in support of the Fund Raiser. Andy
is a great guy and I encourage you to check out his very nice web
site. Thanks again, Andy!!
For those of you that ordered gifts with your Contribution, I will be
shipping these out over the next few weeks as the merchandise arrives and
as I can get all of the orders processed. Its quite a job so I appreciate
your patience! I hope to have everything on its way by the end of the
month if not sooner.
If you would still like to make a Contribution to support the Lists, please
feel free to do so! If you'd like to receive one of the awesome free
gifts, they will be available on the web page though the end of the
month. The Contribution web page can be found here:
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
Finally, I would like to once again sincerely thank each and everyone of
you that took the time to make a Contribution to support the Lists this
year! Your kind support greatly appreciated!
THANK YOU!

Drew, I am pleased to hear that your 50 is beating expectations.
The book figure for cross wing limit is low I believe due to the UC design strength
for side loads. I personally think the limit was one that allowed you to
land with 5kts of "drift" i.e. no runway heading correction at all when rounding
out.
Rest assured that the a/c can take more than 5 kts, I have been flying the 50 for
10 years now and assure you that many of my landings have been at 15-20 kts
of wind. In fact some have run out of rudder including take offs!! ops.
The tail locking design is for good reason. It keeps the a/c straight in a cross
wind!! There are several reasons why I would not go manual, one being higher
work load and one day for sure you will forget lock when landing. (not serious
usually but one day in a wind it will be!!)
The YAK 50 is quite heavy at the tail in flight configuration and you need a lot
of power on the brakes to lift the tail so don't worry about relaxing stick
to neutral to turn when taxing. Adjust the lock to release at neutral or with
a little back stick is my advise.
Cheers, mark
BTW, we have a strong spar YAK 50 for sale at present. Exceptional condition and
always loved!! only 12 hrs in Russia the rest in the UK. approx 270 hrs TTSN
now.

I have about 30 hours on my new Yak 50. It exceeds my expectations in most
respects.
I have only two design beefs:
a. crosswind component is too low. Obviously, there's not much one can do
about that except do the arithmetic before attempting to land, and have
enough gas to try the next field.
b. auto-locking tailwheel. This presumes conditions we don't have, I
guess: square grass patch landing fields, or multiple runway
aerodromes. (Evidently Yakovlev figured that only a dope would land a
tailwheel plane crosswind.)
I don't like to sacrifice one control axis, just to (alternately) deflect
the elevator or turn the plane while on the ground.
Has anyone re-rigged the tailwheel lock to be manual?
Thanks.

Just to add to this, Magellan did exactly the opposite to me: I have
purchased a GPS from them in 1998 which has never really worked (only 50%
of the time, can't find the satellites, and sually when you actually need
them) and finally last year I enquired to get it serviced. After several
telephone calls and e-mails fo about one month, here's the answer: "too
old, no service available, sorry".
Basically they told be to go F--- Off and throw the thing away.
In all the industries I have worked for, service and parts MUST be
available for 10 years.
To semi-quote Drew: "I can't remember when I was treated so bad by a mass
marketer. I would
just like not to commend them publicly, and perhaps they'll be rewarded
with a few sales less!"

Oliver

Hi gang,
I just got word from the Palm Springs Air Museum confirming their desire
to host our event the last weekend in February (27-29). Apparently the
Blue Forces are concerned because they are bringing in heavy iron for
security (5-6 P51's will be flying there as well!).
The tentative schedule outline is:
Thurs. 25th - afternoon arrivals
Fri 26th - AM arrivals. Tactical Formation Ground school starts at 1
p.m. Introductory Tac Form hop. Day will end with an Intro to ACM
brief.
Sat. 27th. - ACM brief and hops in AM. Introduction to Low Level
navigation (when we say Low Level, we're talking a 1000'-500' hard
deck...not in the weeds!) and Low Level flights in afternoon. Day ends
with a BBQ and Intro to Air War Sim brief.
Sun. 28th. - Air War Sim brief and simulation in AM. Lunch and launch
for home...
This is obviously a new arena for sport aviation on an organized level.
Reading it a glance may conjure up images of Zeros splashing into the
sea, P-47's strafing trains at 20 feet, and all sorts of chaos. I
assure you that this is a very controlled environment where the primary
concern is safety. Experienced ex-military guys in the community are
there to enhance safety, learning, and enjoyment of what should be some
of the most exhilarating flying since entering an uncontrolled traffic
pattern on a Saturday afternoon!
Hotel arrangements are in the process of being made and I will post
those as soon as they become available. Updated information, and
hopefully downloads will be made available at www.allredstar.com.
Have a great weekend!
Cheers,
Barry

Dear Drew
Yak-50 Crosswind
Saw your posting.
The crosswind limit is not the limit that the plane will take. It is the limit
for landing without correction by the pilot.
Ultimately you will run out of rudder authority, but certainly 15-knots direct
crosswind is possible.
Cant see the problem with the locking tail-wheel - apart from the complexity of
the mechanism and the problems it can cause if not maintained, I believe it works
well, and no need to change.
Best regards

--> Yak-List message posted by: "Dean Courtney" <deancourtney696@hotmail.com>
Yak 50 book x-wind limit is definitely NOT an aerodynamic limit. I would pay
close attention to not side loading the gear a great deal. The gear legs are
plenty strong, but the attach structure is light weight, and the moment arm
of those long legs compounds it, so keep her straight. You have big
aerobatic control surfaces. Use them!
Tail wheel lock o the stick? T-6, P-51 use the same system. Folks have
converted it here in the USA, I can think of 2 aircraft. I suppose it is the
same as converting to Hydraulic brakes, personal like/dislike. Do be sure
that you have the lock rigged to your liking (ie at what point in the stick
travel it engages/disengages) some are hap-hazardly rigged, and take a full
forward stick to disengage, it is a simple system as is, so maybe a little
rigging/attention to detail will be all yours needs.
Keep an eye on the rivets that mount the tail wheel to the fuse. the tail
wheel also has a fairly long moment arm, and if you forget about the tail
wheel lock, and use the brakes to force a turn. These rivets will quickly
loosen, and your ground handling will get loose as well!
Enjoy the 50! They are one of a kind!

Robert:
The Fiat connection may be true - the air filters are a Fiat part (Fiat No:
4371574) and I bought them from an internet supplier for about $7.00 each!
They're used in a 124.
My contact at PZL was Ziggy Wasiucionec ( Wladyslaw Skorski
[skorski@pzl-okecie.com.pl]). The English is a little rough but the parts
showed up about 30 after placing the order.

What I need at the moment is brake pads, these are
hydraulic disc type pads. Somebody told me they are
old fiat car pads... anyway need 4 pads if you have
them. - Robert Starnes

Troops,
Putting out a call for flight leads and wing rated formation pilots who will
be willing to ride in the back seat of "FNG" for possible formation clinic.
Area of operation will be south central Georgia on or around mid January.
Number of these intrepid airmen will determine number of FNGs accepted.
Although this is in the planning stage as a RPA (RedStar Pilots Association)
clinic, we an't picky. Any FAST signatory pilot may happily drink with us and
cross breeding is good for the race.
Please respond off list. You FNGs standby.

I will try to give the Reader's Digest version, sorry.
Magellan screwed me to the max. I bought their 5000 unit with WRITTEN
IFR up gradable by...I forget the date now. This, of course, played
heavily in my choice of G.P.S. units. I bought 2 with their written
assurance... Needless to say not only did they never do the R&D to
Certify the unit - they discontinued manufacture of the unit! In
registered letters, phone calls, faxes, ad nauseam to Magellan to
address the problem and to come up with some kind of
solution/compensation for their "bait and switch" tactics, I was told to
F...off.
I thought, and I told them that anything they could do to soften the
blow would be appreciated. Nothing. Since they don't make an IFR unit
and I had to purchase others new and get rid of the Magellan. I figured
that to offer me one of their handhelds to help compensate for their
contractual failure and to preserve some kind of good will would be
reasonable. But no, nothing ever.
OK, so the Reader's Digest version thing didn't work out.
Respectfully, Rick B

Just to add to this, Magellan did exactly the opposite to me: I have
purchased a GPS from them in 1998 which has never really worked (only
50%
of the time, can't find the satellites, and sually when you actually
need
them) and finally last year I enquired to get it serviced. After
several
telephone calls and e-mails fo about one month, here's the answer: "too
old, no service available, sorry".
Basically they told be to go F--- Off and throw the thing away.
In all the industries I have worked for, service and parts MUST be
available for 10 years.
To semi-quote Drew: "I can't remember when I was treated so bad by a
mass
marketer. I would
just like not to commend them publicly, and perhaps they'll be rewarded
with a few sales less!"

Folks,
I received several volunteers for the new U.S. Regional Coordinator (RC) positions
and will send out a notice on who these individuals are, and what it is they
will be doing. I will also be sending out a notice for the 2004 Event Directors
for SnF, Osh, ARS and all clinisc/events planned.
If you are of the creative type and have are familiar, on any level, with web
software such as Dreamweaver of MS Frontpage, the new RPA website opening soon
could use content managers. This is a low-time volunteer position that you can
perform from the comfort of your home when you have free time. You will NOT
be building web pages or getting deeply in design code at all (unless you want
to get really creative), but simply accessing the RPA server to manage the
content uploaded by members, or things you and others feel would be of interest
to the members.
Below is an example list. The first three require no web experience whatsoever,
the fourth requires only a basic understadning of web design, mostly nothing
more than cut and paste!
1. Weekly polls Manager - An administrator driven polling software - as the administrator
you set the question of the week/month
2. Online calendar Manager - An administrator managed online calendar - Just click-to-approve/delete
a member submitted event
3. Discussion Manager - An Administror managed online duscussion board - click-to
delete/clean up old discussion trees in seconds
4. Check the "member content" file on the server and place submitted content (articles,
etc.) in the web site. Content is uploaded with an identification tag
selected by the member uploading the content (formation, safety, maintenaince,
etc.) so there is no guess work on where it should go. Cutting and pasting
an article submitted in MS Word in to the appropriate web page takes only a few
minutes.
The RPA will supply you with software as required. There's really no limit to the
number of content managers, so if you are interested in adding to the creative
side of the RPA please e-mail me off list!

Is your tong in your cheek or are you a "FNG'? OK, for those who don't know
better. FNG stands for "Formation New Guy" or feminine gender "Formation New
Gal". Of course if you are a gross in your manners or have a real military
back ground, (US Army) it means "F__king New Guy". Of course this is not PC.
