Don't have those sorry. But what I do have are cards I made up to
replace the original russian cards (those on the RHS behind plastic).
Mine originally came showed oil dilution tables etc, some were
unreadable. So I made new ones for: engine settings, entry speeds,
local airports (freq, rwy), airspeed limitations. Anyone want them as
templates let me know & I will email direct. I laminated mine and cut
to size.

Hi
I'm about to redo all the label plates/stickers on both front and back
panels on my 52. Does anyone have a template for all the
shapes/sizes/fonts etc? Would be a lot easier if someone has done this
before, then to go and measure up all the old ones. Word or any bitmap
format would be fine.
Thanks!

I am having a similar problem. I want to repaint the interior of my YAK52. I
am trying to find a way to make dry transfer, rub off decals. Years ago
there was a special photo paper available that made dry transfer decals from
a transparency. I have called Kodak etc, and no one makes it. I am trying to
find a laser decal shop that will take my Word document and make a laser cut
decal that will allow me to rub on" Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, Com Radio,
Transponder, etc. in the Font and size I want. If you find anything, please
contact me.

Greg,
A very interesting book all pilots should have read before trusting their
lives to a piston engine :
"Aircraft Engine Operating Guide" by Kas Thomas/Belvoir Publications (ISBN
0-8306-2431-7).
This clearly written book answers the most FAQ's on every phase of engine
operation from startup to shutdown or to quote Private Pilot : " ...Never
has the general aviation world had such a good primer on engine care and
feeding. There's an explanatory section on the "shower of sparks"
magneto/starting system that is incredibly concise and clear ...".
Regards,
Lieven Buyse.

Does anyone have a manual for a Cornelius air compressor? I have one that I
use to refill my air bottles. One of the three cylinders isn't working
correctly. It would be nice to have a manual before I open things up. I am
told they are very touchy about head bolt torque.

I've read the thread on fuels and carbon deposits, and I have to plead
guilty to being one of those who neglect to lean properly since I fly
for short periods and rarely go higher than a few thousand feet. But I
do fly often, almost every day. On 2 occasions in the last couple of
years, when I went to start all I got was a hiss and my prop didn't
move. I had to shut off the mags, get out and move the prop. I got back
in and the engine started fine. I was told that could be due to soot in
the valve seat not allowing the valve to close completely and letting
air escape.
Could this be due to my poor leaning habits, and if so, what could be
done to clean out the soot. Would running the engine at a high power
setting for an extended period blow the crap out? I have been mixing
MMO with my fuel since I've owned the plane.

Here's the secret Aubrey. Purchase a P-Touch machine manufactured by
Brother. We use it all the time to make precisely what you are looking for.
There are several machines that will do the job. The machine for around
$100 is more than adequate. I use 4 different tapes: White letters on clear
tape; Black on clear; Black on white: on black. Tapes come in several
different widths. Usually the 1/2" tapes fit the bill. You can make the
letters just about as large as the tape and the machine offers various fonts
and other options like bordering the letters. Check them out on either
Office Depot or Staples.

Kas is a rather controversial figure but he always seemed to have his thinking
straight. He used to be the editor of Light Plane Maintenance, the quality of
which, IMHO, went down substantially when he left. I cannot comment on everything
they write but in the areas where I have expertise (primarily electrical/electronic)
I have caught them making gross errors in the information they provide.
That never happened when Kas was the editor. FWIW.
Yes, I consider his book on recip engine ops to be an excellent primer. Granted,
our radial engines have their own idiosyncrasies but as far as basic combustion,
cooling, ignition, etc., are concerned, the information is still spot on.

Lieven:
Thanks! I will definitely get that book and read it. I also spent some time
on the web and found an interesting article at EAA web site about autogas vs
avgas. http://www.eaa.org/education/fuel/autogas_vs_avgas.pdf After
reading that article I'm not so sure I want to blend auto gas with 100LL.
Anyway, I found out I can get 100LL for $2.05/gal if I just deviate a little
from my usual flight plan.

Aubrey,
There is a very nice, simple and cheap way to make those panel signs. It is
a plastic material made of 2 layers in different color, and the text is
machined into the top layer only, and there's tons of choices of colors,
can also be made in brass or aluminium. If you use plastic, you can decide
on different colors for different categories of switches or indications
(i.e. red for emergency, black for oil, yellow for fuel or any other
combination you like). And they are self-adhesive.
The only difficulty is you have to do find is the guy who has the machine
and does the job. Here in France these are generally at shoe repair shops
(they usually also make keys and these labels) in shopping malls.
As an indication, the main usage for these is to write your name on your
letter-box or house door, or company name etc. I'm sure you will very
easily find one near to you.
It is dead-cheap and they'll write anything you like. Looks professional,
just like the ones you see in brand-new aircraft.
Oliver.

Aubrey,
I have one somewhere in my stuff, I'll try to find it and see if it has the
torque specs. I bought it some years back from a guy who sells Tech manuals
in Trade a Plane. Before you open it up load the entire pump with solvent
and let it set for a day or so, then try it again after draining it well and
adding a bit of compressor oil to the clys, You may simply have stuck rings
or a stuck poppet valve.
Always Yakin,

Does anyone have a manual for a Cornelius air compressor? I have one that I
use to refill my air bottles. One of the three cylinders isn't working
correctly. It would be nice to have a manual before I open things up. I am
told they are very touchy about head bolt torque.

IMHO, I think you should upload them to the files section of the YPA website
so any and all can have access to them.

The material is called engraving plastic. It come in various thicknesses,
colours and surface finish.
The material is indeed inexpensive but the finished product may not be. That
is a function of the purchase price and maintenance costs of the engraving
equipment, the research time in designing a placard, transmitting that
design to the engraver, whether through a CAD program or directly to the
unit (these can eat up many hours), the time involved in actually cutting
the placard, hand sanding the edges and applying the adhesive medium,
drilling screw holes, etc.
Some of this labour can probably be reduced with a laser engraver using pre
adhesive backed plastic but of course the equipment costs increase.
If you can market 10,000 of these the unit cost is cheap.
If it is one off, well you get the picture.
I manufacture these for the CJ6, Harvards and T6's. The CJ set currently
includes approx. 90 pieces for both cockpits.

Just returned from Kitty Hawk. Went up there yesterday and had my picture
taken in-flight with Kill Devil Hill and monument in back ground. HOPE the film
comes out. I'll post it when I get a chance.
Has anyone done this before?
Weather CAVU until I got abeam of ILM. Then had to drop under a 3,500'
overcast and get bounced around by low level turbulence. After navigating a buecup
of restricted areas I made it to MQI which is just 4nm south of Kitty Hawk.
Don't think about just flying in there on the 17th. EVERY THING (including
tiedowns!) are already booked full.
We did the air to air stuff, than the photo wanted to do a 'low pass' back at
the field, (he flying the C-172 said he had done this before). Being the
skeptic one, I found good reason to watch out. If I had stayed in the normal
position, he would have drugged me though the trees at the of the runway!
Spent the night there and flew back today. CAVU with a 20kt tailwind.
Stopped at ASY to check out the airport for a formation clinic site. Very nice
place with really nice folks.

Boy are you lucky... The "best of the best" is in Ocala, FL. Nikolay

have seen him teach levels from Sportsman to Unlimited and a couple of

I purchased a Brother labeling unit that can be connected to the USB port on
my computer. It comes with design software that lets you do some amazing
things (very custom placards).
The unit is also a fully stand-alone unit with the same keyboard of the
cheaper versions so it is not necessary to connect it to a computer for
normal everyday stuff ... So you don't even have to open the computer
software unless you want to.
It has rechargeable batteries so working in the field is very easy.
I have used the included design software to make some custom decals for an
instrument panel that looked better than original. With the multiple
options of tapes to fit the machine you can accomplish the lettering any way
you like (I did some white on clear that look professional when applied to a
painted black panel). This machine even lets you make rubber stamps with a
special kit (never tried that one) and iron-on transfer tapes. There are
also tapes available for making transfer "rub-on" lettering if you prefer to
go that route although I would suggest a clear coat over the panel after the
transfers are done to protect them.
Once you get the hang of the software you can make graphical groupings with
the ability to draw lines, curves and any sort of geometrical figures and
also insert jpegs or other type of art. I even made a custom audio in label
that fit over my intercom aux inputs that left them looking like factory.
When you first get one of these things you can get a bit carried away and
you'll even have the cat labeled before it's over. After the fervor settles
down you have a great tool for a myriad of other tasks (I make
tamper-evident labels for equipment at work for example).

I forgot to mention the Brother model number in my previous post:
PT-9600 and it can take up to 1.5" tapes.

Lads, I was stumbling through the CJ-6 operating manual and was surprised to note
that it
says Mixture Rich, Aft which is contrary to most normal aircraft. By luck, I got
a 3 lever quadrant on Ebay
from a Stearman person and this quadrant is configured to pull the lever back to
RICH. Further,
I noticed that the carb heat is the same..pull aft to OFF postion. Would someone
be kind enough to confirm
this when they have a chance, please? Also, how is the oil cooler door adjusted
from the cockpit ?
A push - pull cable on the panel or lever on a quadrant? Thanks..

Dave,
I take it that your CJ-6 is missing these parts?
The mixture is "backwards" compared to US however with "good Chinese
thinking." There is a tab on the throttle (below the side panel) that pulls the
mixture to rich whenever the throttles is moved to closed. Makes sence to me.
You
are supposed to turn off these engines with the mag switch, not the mixture.
We could (and have on this list) go into endless debates on the pros & cons,
but simply put its just the way the Chinese did it.
True. The carb heat comes on when you push it forward. There is some logic
in this. Next to it is the firewall fuel shutoff handle which is forward for
flight. IF the carb heat were also forward, there maybe a tendency to grab the
wrong handle. Pull the wrong one aft, and the engine will quit.
Normally the oil cooler door works like the same mechanism that moves your
cowl louvers. Rotating a brown circular knob on the right side panel, forward.

Jim,
Are you sure you meant ASY? I'm really interested in the formation clinic,
so I looked up ASY on AirNav and ASY is listed as Ashley, North Dakota.

My family lived on Aiea Heights above Pearl at the time of the attack. The Japanese
planes would be streaming shell casings as they came up over Aiea and turned
back down. My brother was wanting to go outside but my Mom and Aunt had
the windows covered and wouldn't let him go. My Uncle was a duty officer at Hickam
that morning.

Giday, Jim. Thanks for the explanation. No..I don't have a CJ-6. I'm scratch building
a Fairchild 51
which is like the older brother to the Fairchild FC-2 but the little brother to
the more common Fairchild 71.
I've chosen to use the Housai 285 hp engine in the project. I'm trying not to bug
the list with useless questions,
but I'm at the stage of fitting out the cockpit and there's lot's I don't know
about what will be needed to make
things work forward of the firewall. This brown knob for the cooler door has
about the same function as a fine adjustment for a conventional mixture control
then? Just pushing or pulling
a cable up front at the door? Thanks.

I represented my state as part of 50 flags to Kittyhawk. I flew down in
August with Reade Genzlinger see link below.

Just returned from Kitty Hawk. Went up there yesterday and had my picture
taken in-flight with Kill Devil Hill and monument in back ground. HOPE the
film
comes out. I'll post it when I get a chance.
Has anyone done this before?
Weather CAVU until I got abeam of ILM. Then had to drop under a 3,500'
overcast and get bounced around by low level turbulence. After navigating a
buecup
of restricted areas I made it to MQI which is just 4nm south of Kitty Hawk.
Don't think about just flying in there on the 17th. EVERY THING (including
tiedowns!) are already booked full.
We did the air to air stuff, than the photo wanted to do a 'low pass' back
at
the field, (he flying the C-172 said he had done this before). Being the
skeptic one, I found good reason to watch out. If I had stayed in the
normal
position, he would have drugged me though the trees at the of the runway!
Spent the night there and flew back today. CAVU with a 20kt tailwind.
Stopped at ASY to check out the airport for a formation clinic site. Very
nice
place with really nice folks.
