YAK 52 Owners,
The FOD Prevention Cover design has been finalized and the first 25 FOD
Prevention Cover kits are now in manufacturing and will be available in a
few days. The price for the product is $100, plus shipping. The kit
will include all materials and instructions necessary to affect a proper
installation. Installation time is quite minimal. Once installed, the FOD
Prevention Cover is easily removed in less than one minute for access to the
rearward most compartment for inspections. If you have not seen this
accident report
http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_avsafety/documents/page/dft_avsafety_024587.hcsp,
take a look and pay particular attention to Figure 2.
http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_avsafety/documents/graphic/dft_avsafety_024587-2.jpg
If the FOD Prevention Cover would have been in place on this aircraft, it
most likely could have prevented this accident.
If you are interested in ordering a FOD Prevention Cover kit, please email
me off-list at adsavar@gte.net or telephone me directly and I will provide
ordering instructions and any additional information you require.
Fly safe and happy holidays,
Dennis

Makes me proud to be an American. It used to be we helped people who needed it.

So what color is the "True" CJ-6 Green? My airplane paint is
starting to look like a camo job with two shades of original
paint and three touch up areas I sprayed. For each paint
batch I took an original fabric sample direct from China
when I got the plane. At that time all of the external
markings were sprayed over and what was described as
"Trading Company" Green. I rubbed through to find the
original markings and replicated them.
So now, 8 years later I need a real paint job. Each paint
supply shop that put the fabric sample under their computer
came up with a different color. Only a hand mixed batch,
done by a crusty old timer ever matched. Does anyone have a
US color chart number I can reference? Otherwise it's US
Olive Drab, kinda what the underlying green looks like.

Silly boy! They are two *completely* different problems. Disassembling, crating,
and then shipping an airplane is *much* more sensible than pouring 100 gallons
of gas into it and letting its owner fly it away.
Hopefully these people will come to their senses.

I read an article some time back about a South African that was flying in
the Antartic, they were being refueled from barrels of gas stored in the
snow. This they contracted a Russian company to deliver once a year or so -
anyone else read that? - it could be the fuel is there that he can use. I
remember it was very expensive, but he doesn't need that much. Don't know
whether its avgas or jet though.
But then I remembered something else...Safair fly out to Antartica as well,
so I've just emailed their marketing director the article and suggested that
there was some worldwide exposure to be had if they could help Jon out.

Don't know if this helps, Craig, but here's one colour chart..
http://www.aircrafttechsupport.com/paints.htm I used Federal 208 A Olive drab on my
Christavia. This one's a Polyfiber product. I highly recommend the services of
Dondi
and Jim Miller at Aircraft Technical Support. They work hard to keep you happy.
The colour sample you see here is not ( at least on my new screen)
exactly what it looks like in reality and when you add the
flattener, things get skewed even more. They can send a "true colour" chart directly
to you.

Fellows, fellows. It's all very simple. It's called CYA! If Sanson or the
American military folks allow this guy to take off and the guy doesn't make
it then they probably think there is some sort of implied liability for
facilitating his flight.
So it has nothing to do with practicality whatsoever. It doesn't matter if
it costs 100 times more to do it their way in the end a bureaucrat can
defend his job by doing the "safe" thing.
Those Aussie blokes sure have some balls, though, don't they? I appreciate
the fellow's sense of independence and adventure.

Craig,
Your close to correct on the green color, but to make it look correct you
must apply it with a #4 barn broom on a windy dusty day. The light
refracting off the grooves and lines in the paint will add the necessary
optical effect to make it look authentic. Additional help can be obtained
by being fortunate enough to have a high silicone content in your airborne
dust, everyone knows that Gobi dust is far more desirable than Beijing dust.
I plan to leave for China in the spring (have canceled my Dec trip) If I can
bring you back any real Chinese dust, just let me know. I do plan to be
near the Gobi, so it will be the high quality stuff.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

What fool would launch off in a plane to such a place and not know how
he was going to get back. The man has no plan. Thank God there are
Americans there to pin the blame on!!
I vote for the plane in a crate at his expense and a ride home from the
NZ people. At least he will be protected from himself this way and his
death in the plane won't be blamed on the Americans....

Disassembling,
crating, and then shipping an airplane is *much* more sensible than
pouring
100 gallons of gas into it and letting its owner fly it away.

Correction: untouched by human hands, unless those hands have first been
government sanctioned and allowed... I guess we can be thankful no
bureaucrat was present at Kitty Hawk 100 years ago..

After reading about the predicament of our intrepid
Ozzy aviator, I realize the man below is 100% correct.
If it got out that you could just drop in at any old
time for a spot of tea and a fillup there'd be all
kinds of nuts in their homebuilts dropping out of the
sky for free service. Mcmurdo is NOT on any FBO lists
that I have looked at.. Imagine if you had a private
strip and some guy landed out of the blue and demanded
you sell him gas just cause he needed some.... There
is a very clear message being sent here. Only excuse
the guy has is if maybe he encountered strong winds or
something preventing him from making his regular fuel
stop, who knows what the situation really is...

I stand corrected, He did encounter strong headwinds.
They should indeed try to help him out of there.
Wonder how long it takes the boat to sail over with a
few barrels of 100LL?

If I had to put a plane down in Antartica, I would be more than happy with a warm
bed and a ride home. He's lucky he's getting that much. If you can't afford
the result of being stupid, you should stay at home.

Assuming you're not being sarcastic, "MM", I recommend you read the entire
article and maybe a little more on Mr Johanson. He's travelled across the
world extensively in his "little homebuilt".
It's not about anyone being concerned about the man's safety or the cost of
the fuel... It's the arrogance of the a$$e$ working on our dime down there
cataloging bacteria and lichens being more concerned about the condition of
the ice than human interests.

How does a guy with three trips around this rock, in that little airplane,
end up in that predicament? I am amazed at his acomplishments, but further more
amazed at the gamble taken (and lost).
And besides, I'm not sure that the US military keeps stock of 100LL, or any
of it's close cousins, since the 80's. I wonder, what was the last piston
military aircraft in use?
My vote is the T-28, but that's only because I've got one in pieces on the
hangar floor.
Merry Christmas!
