Drew,
You don't receive the Darwin Award unless you actually fly
with the leak; but I'm betting you never make it to the
runway (directional control) in order to claim the prize.
If you can Hear the leak, you can Fix the leak. It's the
quiet sneakers that get you. You might need the services of
a local A&P, most are fairly good with anything mechanical
UNLESS they work for the FBO. Then the get stupid for the
first hour or so on the time clock.
Of course I exaggerate, you DO deserve a Runner Up Award for
tying down in winter and not knowing your systems. Is there
a nearby hanger available? A few tools, some heat, some
help, left over Christmas Cheer?

Drew,
Contact Sean Carroll (240-375-3037). Sean has a maintenance facility at St.
Mary's Airport/Leonardtown (2W6). His mechanic, Christian, has experience with
Yaks/CJs. I just had my CJ annual inspection done there.

Drew,
I agree with Craig. I willing to bet that leak is as simple as a loose
fitting. A 17 mm wrench may be the only tool you need. Almost any good A&P could
figure the system if you have a schematic handy. To find where the leak
really is just spray soapy water in the area where you hear the leak. The bubbles
will tell you where its at. Start from there.
When you say the "rotary valve" is leaking, are you talking about the engine
start valve on the engine its self? This should not be getting any air at all
unless the starter solenoid is electrically held open.

Now this is a real pre heat http://www.yakuk.com/heating.htm The heater unit in use is typical in the Eastern Bloc, operation is by an electric fan with a diesel burner. I took this last winter when collecting an a/c from Lithuania.
In these cold temps make sure you also pre heat the oil cooler or it could "blow"
I have seen this once in the UK. I'm not sure but it could have been due to
summer weight oil at the low winter temps.
Happy new year,
Best regards

Dear Listers,
The phone company was out here bright and early this morning and repaired
the wires and the T1 connection is back up and rock solid!
Again my apologies for any inconvenience the disruption may have caused.
Best regards,

I might have forgot to mention that the FOD "barrier" we are now fitting (on YAK
52) at annual or next inspection is very simple to fit, all you need do is ceconit
fabric over the lightening holes on the last bulkhead, also do not forget
the 2 holes in front of the tail plain. There was a case of a fuel drain screwdriver
migrating through these to get to the elevator bell crank. (I believe
in one of the Nordic countries)
No holes to drill, within the abilities of anyone to replicate.
I hope this helps.

Most likely it is a check valve. This can be determined by looking at the
air pressure gauge and seeing which side, main or emergency is leaking down
after you remove the nozzle. Assuming the air is exhausting out the
external air fill port, there are two check valves, one on each side, that
prevents them from discharging overboard when you remove the filler nozzle.
Feel free to call me if you'd like to chat about it on the telephone Drew.

Drew,
I feel your pain about a questionable 50 purchase!! Now someone else may feel my
pain too. (not physical pain!!!!)
Anyway, about the gear. When my airplane was on its delivery flight, the left main
failed to retract. That was a good thing in this instance. At the end of the
rod that comes out of the actuating ram is a clevis that attaches to the landing
gear. Well, due to it NEVER EVER being lubed by anyone here in the states,
it broke. No gear ever coming up with that thing broke. That being said, the
gear does not depend on air to get the gear to stay locked. You would pretty
much have to drive it into a ditch (or hangar) before it will fail aft.
Drop Dean Courtney an email (DeanCourtney696@hotmail.com<mailto:DeanCourtney696@hotmail.com>) and he can tell you just about everything you need to know about the gear and probably the rest of the airplane. He knows them by virtue of tearing my 50 down and "restoring" it. We also have some pretty good documentation for them as well. If we can help, let us know.
I also have a totally overhauled set of gear legs for the 50 if some really needs
them! They wont be cheap as they were not cheap!!
Someday I will come on here and talk about how the 50 flies.
Happy Holidays all!!!
