Subject: | Formation Certification in a Yak-18T |
--> Yak-List message posted by: scott.huff@aivia.aero
Yaksters,
Once I get my 18T, I'd like to get formation "certified" by a sanctioned
organization. Based on limited research, it appears that the Yak-18T doesn't
explicitly fall within the FAST guidelines (i.e. it doesn't have a two-place
tandem canopy). Is there an exception within FAST for this type of airplane?
If not, how do the Bonanza guys get formation certified?
I've had informal formation training & experience to date, mainly in C-182 jump
airplanes. I want to be formally prepared just in case there are any 52/CJ
guys that would be willing to form up with a "grocery getter" en route to east
coast airshows!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Yup, I'm back with a new name: "cpayne@joimail.com" and
living in FLA. I see through the
archives that the same old subjects are cycling back again;
MMO, spins, and Yak v. CJ.
I'm looking forward to MTW/OSH, as I need to pick up my
airplane which is still in Illinois.
I will be operating off of grass but it's not the same as in
IL; there is black dirt up there and sand down here. Any of
you Florida boyz have problems with sand and grit in
the brakes and wheel bearings?

If all you want to do is to fly formation with the Yak/CJ folks, get the training
and you are good to go. What the FAST card buys you is permission from the
feds to fly formation in waivered airspace (airshow). So you need the training
to be safe but whether or not you actually get the card may not be an issue.
I can't imagine it would be a problem learning to fly formation in the Yak-18T
so long as you have sufficient visibility to safely do rejoins.

Which girlfriend would that be, Drew?

Na! It's called "sugar sand" and when its real dry, it acts just like mud.

The Bonanza guys don't really get FAST certified. They get training from a
lot of FAST instructors, but they don't really get a FAST card. Also though
they show up in formation to OSH, they are not flying in "wavered airspace" i.e.
(during the show) which is the ONLY place the FAST card means anything.

The FAST training is great for all flying. What I think you'll find is more
formal and detailed approach to flying formation than the jump plane stuff.
As to weather the 18T would fit in? There are number of cabin type formation
ships in the FAST signatories. The Liaison group are using L-17, O-2, L-19
etc. They are signatory of FAST. As far as being part of the YPA's formations,
it would be fine with me, I don't know what the boss would say.
The training is a great way to meet a bunch of neat folks, puts every one on
the same script when flying formation, and adds support for that odd ball Yak
you can haul our extra in. :-)

I've had no prob with the sand except my prop tips get pretty beat up,
otherwise not too much of a prob.
