Hi folks.... anyone out there have any advise/fixes for CJ cowl gills that creep
closed during flight? They only do it when partially open, but it is annoying
and has the propensity to cause some major damage if it occurs during a time
of high workload.
Is there any way in which to increase the friction (or similar) on the mechansim?
All suggestions considered!

Just to fill in on the EAA side, if that hasn't been done already. Sean
Elliot, the Director of Flight Operations for EAA took action on this rather
ill-thought out NPRM as soon as it was issued, and is working with all the
operators who will be affected. Not sure what the latest is on the NPRM,
but am sure EAA would be able to answer questions too if anyone has
concerns.

Remove the control knob and check that the spring that holds the control
knob down to engage the teeth to the housing is on the top of the knob.
I found mine installed with the spring under the the knob

Jeff,
Yes, this could be a very big problem if the water filter happened to
rupture in flight. After looking at the very low "go--no go" specs (for
pitting of the ID) in the Airframe Accessory Overhaul manual I get the
feeling the Chinese were worried about it also. I honestly believe that the
problem with the stock aluminum filters bodies is that they treat their felt
filter pads with acid, and it is either the un neutralized acid attacking
the aluminum filter body wall or there is something corrosive about the type
of desiccant they are using. Am not sure which.
I do carry the stainless steel filter bodies in stock, I also carry recharge
kits for the long water filter, the kit includes all new filters, screens,
and new desiccant. Note that at this time I do not have a cure for the
corrosion problems in the short filter. We are however working on a
stainless fix for that problem also. This new filter will also work on the
Yak 52 in place of the existing stock small water filter.
Happy new year to all
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

Subject: Yak-List: CJ Air Filter...

CJ Folks,
The subject of air filters and corrosion has come up on the yak-list
before...let me add my experience...
I installed a new "long" air filter in my CJ one year ago and flew 60 hours
this year. Upon opening up the filter I found nasty crud.... in the
filters, screens and desicant-to be expected. What I didn't expect to find
was "significant" corrosion on the inside of the air filter barrel. The
corrosion appears to be intergranular...perhaps precipitated by all the
moisture and gook inside? Anyways, the corrosion left pitting of greater
than 1/16th inch in several spots...and this after only 60 hours/one year in
use.
I bring this up because Doug has voiced his concern about this in the past,
and he has come up with a solution. As has been suggested...DON'T wait until
your next annual/condition inspection to check your air filter. These
things can literally be a ticking time bomb right there on your firewall...
Doug, could you please send me one of your new Stainless Air Filter Barrels?
Thanks,
Jeff Linebaugh

One place you might find Russian flight helmets is www.sovietski.com. The
prices are pretty high. They also have things like clocks, KGB and CIA
coffee cups and altimeters (in meters and mm prx, of course), also with high
prices. Sometimes you can find things on eBay. I've seen Russian clocks
there recently for about $40, a fraction of what Sovietski charges.

Most definately is intergrannular corrosion, the sriking feature of which is
it's propensity to follow the grain boundries of the alloy. The result is
very deep corrosion induced cracking along the grain boundries. It is caused
by a number of factors, dissimilar metals, various chemicals, etc. in the
presence of moisture. Without moisture there is little opportunity for it to
begin.
Therefore cleaning, drying and replacement of filter elements is necessary
on a regular basis. That periodicity may be 50 hrs. or more if you are
operating in Arizona, it may very well be 5 hrs. or less if you are on the
Eastern Seaboard. It needs to be determined for your area.
I bring this up because Doug has voiced his concern about this in the past,

Doug"s stainless filter body's are a thing of beauty, I think he is even
working on stainless end caps for them.
However, if installing one results in not doing a regular cleaning and
filter replacement the problem has not changed.
The original filter body was designed with a large safety factor (for
obvious reasons) and with regular military inspection cycles was adequate
for the task. If left unattended it could probably have allowed enough
moisture into the air system to cause the failure of other components long
before it failed.
I guess my point is to make sure we all do a regular and timely inspection.
The stainless filter should last forever in that circumstance and you can
have some confidence that the rest of the system is safe.
