Red Stars,
Thanks for the feedback on ANR headsets, they were really
good tips. What does seem apparent is that "our" experiences
mirror that of the homebuilt world, ie: loud cockpits and a
diverse array of radio/intercom/headsets. What works in one
cockpit may not work in another. My first clue was when I
first purchased my Flightcom Blackhawk headsets and a little
note in the manual mentioned adjusting the DSP gain for
mixing in DC headsets.
To generalize the results of my research:
- Good passive attenuation is required before adding ANR in
these aircraft.
- The amount of ANR attenuation differs between headset
models.
- Test for compatibility (ask?) when mixing brands.
- Headset models are changing all the time, even though the
model # stays the same.
- What works in one aircraft may not work as well in
another.
- More money doesn't always mean more performance. Is the
Bose X really 3 times better than the DRE-6000?
- There is no one best solution (and there ain't no free
lunches).

Belated Happy New Year to all and sundry.
The UK magazine, "Pilot", has an article about group ownership of a CJ-6A.
Interesting reading, especially the author's ability to get the aircraft to
cruise, low level, at 300kph! He does refer to, and include photographs of,
a Nanchang motorbike! Has anyone ever heard of these? It would be fun to
have one, especially during Convention....
Janet
The link to the magazine is

have a copy of it which I can photocopy and send to anyone interested.

The Nanchang factory, like most of China has had a rough time keeping all
its people working since the recent tilt towards capitalism. The Nanchang
factory now builds motor bikes, motor cycles, roller skates, and I believe
some sub assemblies for other manufacturers. They have also partnered up
with two American companies, Kenmore Air Harbor, and EDO, the aircraft float
builders and are building aircraft floats now. During the time they were
working with our FAA to gain certification they also gained certification to
repair Beaver and Otter wings.
A personal observation on a related topic:
With the factories present plans to not build the CJ6 past 2005 and the
military talking about not using the CJ6 past 2007, AND the recent
legalizing of civilian aviation in China, I feel that we have a window of no
more than 5-8 years in which to import these aircraft at sensible prices,
after that it's anyone's guess. I figure it will take that long before
their flying population are ready to move from the Cessna's and into the
round engines, causing prices to rise for the CJ6.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

Does this mean that you can get Nanchang roller skates? Because I just
might need some Nanchang roller skates. And maybe a motor bike, too. :-)

I mean, if it's built as well as the CJ-6A, I'm all about brand loyalty.

ALERT . .RedStar Friends . .ALERT . . . .
Heads up for the National Warbird Operator Conference
Ok City, Oklahoma
February 26 to 29, 2004
http://www.warbirdconference.com/
This is a wonderful "insiders" event for serious warbird types.
2004 is the first year where the Yak / CJ-6 group has an equal footing with all
the other type groups (Fighters, T6, T34 etc).
In previous years they put us in the "other" category (with the L-birds~!) and
none of us proud reds showed up.
2004 will have a dedicated session just for Yaks and Nanchangs . . . (Agenda
on website)
There will be a very informative maintenance / safety / anti-FOD session conducted
by Dennis Savarese.
Another session will discuss recent changes within RPA as described by Drew Blahnick.
The rest of the conference is general sessions on various topics:
* Allen Silver gives a No Shit *Do Not Miss" presentation on parachutes (You
WILL see your chute differently)
* Parker Statoflex gives a presentation on hoses and lines
* There will be an insurance panel with free tomatos to throw at me.
* There will be a medical panel for y'all whose gittin a bit crustee about the
edges . . .
Ok, here's the deal .. it's not free .. but it is a well established conference.
MANY big name warbirds types will be there and I really want us to make a good
showing.
Participation *MAY* make you eligible for a discount on your insurance (see me
for details)
We need good representation from our group, just put it on your credit card and
show up, ok?
The drinking light will be illuminted brightly.

Sorry guys, the motor bikes and cycles won't pass US EPA standards so you
cannot bring them in, Fred Ihlenberg tried it, as I recall they gave him a
choice, send them back or they (customs) would cut them up. But I am sure
the roller skates would import with no problem, and yes I guess you could
say that they have air start Grunt, VROOMMMMMMM, grunt, grunt, gasp,
varoommmm!

Well, I did some searching on Google after I wrote the email, and found that
they have quite a following in the US and Europe. There is a company here
which operates, restores, maintains and sells them.....and they are called
the Chang Jiang bike, built in Nanchang, based on the Russian bike which is
based on the BMW bike....

Oh ok then
Classic designs always get copied, but like a copy of the Mona Lisa they
just don't get the style of the original
