I seriously doubt you will ever see it in the oil screen Stuart. That
entire orifice is smaller in diameter than the oil cap. If it were my
airplane I would bite the bullet and remove the oil tank to remove the
oil cap. If it positions itself within the oil line, you could have a
much more serious problem. Dennis

Damn! When I was six I could barely drive a car, let alone fly a Yak.
All kidding aside, getting the plastic detritus out of the oil tank it the right
thing to do.

Yes it will work but the emergency tank will stay filled only if the plumbing,
check valve, and emergency air valve are in good repair. Otherwise you will have
a slow leak so the N2 will eventually get replaced with air.
I think that filling the emergency air tank with N2 is a good one but you still
need to inspect the tank regularly. I would also be more worried about the main
air tank than the emergency air tank but that is going to be filled with air
no matter what you do.
As I recall, doesn't the overhaul manual specify a treatment process for the air
tanks to help prevent corrosion?
Lastly, the Chinese specify overhaul and inspection intervals by operating hours
but not by calendar time. I suspect that the airplanes fly less over here than
they do there. Does anyone know how often the aircraft are typically cycled
back to the factory for overhaul? This might give us some idea how often we
should inspect these things on a calendar basis.

Good point Jay! I had never considered filling the air system with the main
air valve closed.... have never had a reason to try that...didn't even
think about it.
So here is Version 2.0 of the Air Tank filling procedure I intend to use for
my CJ:
1. Fill depleted Emergency Air tank with Nitrogen from external filler port
with the Main Air Valve closed.
2. Reset the air regulator to a slightly lower value (1/4 turn should do it
.) and re-safety wire it. This should preclude air being cycled into the
emergency air bottle by the compressor.
3. Fill the Main Air Tank with air (again from the external filler port)
4. Go Fly!
This procedure will leave N2 in the Emergency Air Tank, hopefully reducing
the possibilities of corrosion, and giving me air for starting.
Brian is right, we have gone round-n-round on air vs. N2 for starting....I
could get my CJ started on N2, but I had to hold my mouth just right. With
air, it was a no-brainer.
The big point though is: if you haven't looked at your air tanks in the
recent past, you may me sitting on hand grenades.
Thanks again guys!

CJ's return to the factory every 1000 hours for what they call an
"overhaul", but in our parlance it is a IRAN inspection. If the aircraft is
not being flown there is also a "no fly time" wherein they pickle the
engine, but I do not know the exact time span.

Nanchang factory don't do the CJ overhaul, they only build new CJs. The CJs overhaul
by Chinese Air force, but the engines overhaul by 2-3 engine factories.

I was aware of the flight-hour numbers but I was trying to get an idea of how long
in calendar time it takes their training command to put that 1000 hours on
an airframe. I was trying to get a feeling for whether they send the airplane
back every year, two years, three years, etc. Lycoming and Continental are
now applying both operating hours AND calendar time to TBO. I was trying to get
a feeling for what amount of calendar time the Chinese expect between overhauls.
It might make a difference to how we schedule inspections and some maintenance.

Looks like I am not going to be able to make it down to Waycross this
weekend. We just have been unable to get a number of maintenance issues
completed in time.
I know y'all will have a great time and looks like the weather will
cooperate. Hopefully I can make the next one.

Subject: | Aileron Alignment and Rigging Problems |
--> Yak-List message posted by: "Dennis Von Ruden" <dvonruden@generalequip.com>
At the risk of sounding like a guy who does not know which end of the
screwdriver to hold on to, we are having an alignment/rigging problem
with the starboard aileron. Just finishing up a CJ restoration project.
We inspected and recovered both ailerons. The port aileron aligns
perfectly with the trailing edge of the wing. The starboard aileron
droops down and has a wider gap between it and the wing. Probably 3/16
inch in the vertical and horizontal planes at the right wingtip. You can
visually see the difference. It does not appear that we have the aileron
attachment fitting (that bolts to the rear spar) up side down. The
aileron is new with no damage. Both wing tips hit a bridge when the
aircraft was being transported by railroad on the way from Long Beach.
Yes, the wing tips were damaged (and replaced). But, there was no spar
or aileron attachment fitting damage.
My question is am I being too picky to expect both ailerons to perfectly
align? Anyone ever have a similar problem with alignment? Thanks.
