I'll check on hotel rates, fuel, etc. if there are enough people interested. Aiken has one 5500 x 100 strip and another 3000 x 75, plenty of ramp and parking space, very large brand new conference room and terminal to stage out of, and several fuel trucks. Hotels and restaurants are almost on airport property, I'm sure the FBO will provide trans. There are a couple of good bars with pool tables within 10 mins. Y'all let me know what you think. Recently it had become worse. I know there has been a lot of discussion over venting , balanced flight ,etc... I drained my fuel carefiully with the fuel caps open to eliminate venting problems. When flow rate was low, fuel stayed balanced. As fuel rate increased left fuel tank would not tranfer or had minimal transfer. I pulled the fuel hoses from tank to fuselage and discovered left hose had a considerable obstruction that only would occur as flow increased.. I could blow lightly through the hose with no problem but if I blew hard, the flow would stop. It was caused by rubber near the fitting that was peeled back during construction of the hose. This obstruction was such that if you were to run the right tank dry, I don't think the left tank would have provided enough fuel to sustain flight. Hose was of unknown origin, probably russian rebuilt, but looked like a western hose. To make a long story short, for those fuel transfer problems, check the tank hoses. Probably not a Russian rebuilt. More likely a hose assembled by a previous owner who did not have the appropriate tools, or knowledge, for the job. This is a fairly common problem. Without a precise fitting assembly mandrel the end of the sleeve can cut a near perfect flapper valve from the interior of the hose. In some cases (angled fittings) it is not possible to use a mandrel. In ALL cases it is necessary to visually inspect the hose interior after assembly. Hotel rates are 45.00 (Holiday Inn Express), we have use of a 15 passenger van, I'll also have my truck and tools there. The FBO will work with us on the fuel, they have plenty of oil (Philips 25w60, Aeroshell 100/50 and 120/60) in stock. Ramp space is great, we have use of the conference room, etc. There is a mechanic handy if needed. There is a family restaurant a cross the road from the airport that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Several very nice bars with upstairs rooms and pool tables downtown (10 mins). The airport manager, Beth North, is checking with them to see if we can play CRUD. She will also take care of a courtesy call to Augusta ATC to let them know we'll be in the area. Please contact Beth North at 803-648-7803 to reserve a room. Do any of you guys want an aerobatic box? More later. If you have wanted to do something for those serving overseas this is a good place to start. I have hooked up with a guy that wants to get a cub or lunscombe when he gets back stateside. I am suggesting to EAA that they support donate a membership where we stateside members can donate a membership to someone serving overseas that way they would get the mags etc etc. Please browse through the site as the kids out there need as much from home as they can get. I was looking through the site and it brought back memories to me of what it is like to be deployed, it can really suck and be the best time of your life all at the same time. I intend, of course to convert this guy to the dark side of the force and get him to buy a Russian monster instead of a lunscombe ;) http://www.booksforsoldiers.com/forum/index.php Whatever you feel about the war are the situation these guys and gals deserve your support. Good news on the insurance side. We had a meeting with the V.P. of AIG and their lead Underwriter Cody McCormick regarding Warbird Insurance. I made a convincing argument regarding insurance rates on our aircraft. I gave them an example of my Yak 52 and the price the wanted. They reviewed their program and SLASHED their prices on our class of aircraft. The new rates from AIG are very competitive. This is a great thing. As an insurance broker and Yak owner, I'm very sensitive to our situation. Contact me directly to discuss details. In our research we think there maybe 500 Nanchang and Yaks "trainers" in the country. This does not count the Yak 55, 54, or any of the Fighters that Yakovlev built. (Yak 3, 7, 9, 11 etc) I'm not aware of Nanchang ever making any "fighters". . Not sure why . . . Ok I'm biased as a Yak 52 owner. But we've made a good step forward on insurance for ALL our class of aircraft. Keep in mind that not all brokers are aware of this change yet. AIG won't make any changes "mid-term", . . in other words let your current policy run out before making a change. again. . please contact me directly for details.
