I recall the days in the midwest when "gasohol" was first
introduced. Many gas stations merely treated it like just
more gasoline and some problems appeared. Problems both in
storage of gasohol at the filling station and in automotive
fuel systems. The problem was water.
Alcohols absorb water, but only up to a certain percentage
and then "phase separation" occurs and the excess water
separates out. When a ternary azeotrope of gasoline,
ethanol, and water reach a given "mix", the mixture form
glops of "jelly" that will clog screens and wet in-line
paper fuel filters. Engine stops running, fuel system is a
mess.
When I started using gasoline under the EAA STC for my
spammer, I also got a "tester" which was merely a test tube.
Fill the tube with gas up to the line, add a bit of water to
the next mark and shake. Look at it again and see where the
separation line is. If it's not where you started, there is
alcohol in the fuel.
BTW, gasohol is blended by the distributor, not the
distiller, often benzene is added to help "dry" the mixture.
Know where your filling station gets their supply if you
intend to fly with mogas.

I read of the below alcohol test years ago. Might be worth a try.
To test mogas for alcohol put an inch or so of water in a qt glass jar.
Precisely mark the water level on the outside of the jar. Fill the jar
with Mogas and shake it up. After it settles if the water level has
risen then there is alcohol in the Mogas, which has hydroscopically
(sp?) combined with the water.
The only problem I have had with mixing (non-alcoholic) Mogas with 100LL
is exhaust staining on the belly. I get very little with straight
100LL. I finally decided the cost saving wasn't worth the hassle of
cleaning it. I should have painted the belly a darker color. :-)

Quote - from David Murphy, DFW CAF:
We gotta get rid of turbines, they are ruining aviation. We need to go back
to big round engines.
Anybody can start a turbine, you just need to move a switch from "OFF" to
"START," and then remember to move it back to "ON" after a while.
My PC is harder to start. Cranking a round engine requires skill, finesse
and style. On some planes, the pilots are not even allowed to do it.
Turbines start by whining for a while, then give a small lady-like poot and
start whining louder.
Round engines give a satisfying rattle-rattle, click-click BANG, more
rattles, another BANG, a big macho f..t or two, more clicks, a lot of smoke
and finally a serious low pitched roar.
We like that. It's a guy thing. When you start a round engine, your mind is
engaged and you can concentrate on the flight ahead.
Starting a turbine is like flicking on a ceiling fan: Useful, but hardly
exciting.
Turbines don't break often enough, leading to aircrew boredom, complacency
and inattention. A round engine at speed looks and sounds like it's going to
blow at any minute. This helps concentrate the mind.
Turbines don't have enough control levers to keep a pilot's attention.
There's nothing to fiddle with during the flight.
Turbines smell like a Boy Scout camp full of Coleman lanterns. Round engines
smell like God intended flying machines to smell.
I think I hear the nurse coming down the hall. I gotta go.

Troops,
A number of you complained about the way we were treated and not receiving a
discount on fuel so Craig and I went looking a new airports.
Looks like the airport of choice for Sun&Fun this year will Winter Haven
Gilbert (GIF). This puts us 8 NM north of last year's BOW put we are actually
closer to our hotel of last year.
Good points over last year.
We will get a fuel discount promised by the FBO.
They really want us there.
This airport has 2 good runways.
Will have extra fuel trucks on hand.
However ramp space is at premium. We will be parking on grass, so personal
tie downs are a must.
There is no control tower but plenty of local traffic. We need to be
careful.
We are still the same flying distance from LAL.
Craig will come up with the hotel info but if you want to stay at the EAA
WB's hotel that'll be great also.
April 13 thru 19 is S&F dates. Our mass formation practice date starts a few
days before they need us in the show.
We working on the final stuff now.

All,
Since my last post to the list, I've gotten my high performance and complex endorsements.
Before getting any more serious about looking for a CJ, I'd like to
get some dual instruction in one.
Is there anyone in the Phoenix or (preferably) Tucson area to do this with?
Thanks
- Kendel
