The Thunderbird crash photo posted on yesterdays List is a totally computer
done manipulation "simulation" of what it might have looked like (read
fake). It was originally posted by the guy who did it labled as a computer
made image. However, in the last few days, it has been sent to me on four
different occasions as genuine. But, it's a fake.

I agree it is a fake. The actual cockpit video shows nothing but empty
fields where all of those cars and spectators are in the fake picture. Here
is a link to the actual cockpit camera.

Check out http://www.f-16.net/f-16_news_article842.html They posted a
cockpit video of the crash as well. Looks real to me, but hey what do I
know, they can do lots with computers these days...

Received on another list - you be the judge.
...........................................................................
I have noticed all over the internet the shot I had taken of the
Thunderbird crash at Mountain Home AFB, ID and though I am not at
liberty to share the photo; it is out there. I would like to end some
speculation and let you know the photo is real.
I'm a Still Photographer for the USAF and I was stationed at MHAFB
during the air show. I was on the catwalk of the tower at Mtn Home along
with another photog (video) and about seven other (military) spectators.
I have shot the T-birds from the tower before and I was pretty excited
to do it again (the sky was perfect blue). I followed Thunderbird 6 from
takeoff and watched as he pulled into his maneuver. I then noticed
something seemed to be wrong, his direction was a little off; he was
pulling out and heading right towards the tower. At this point I figured
two things: 1. He's either going to fly past this tower and we'll feel
the heat or 2. This is going to be ugly... I waited for the aircraft to
level and clicked the shutter, what I saw through the lens will never go
away...
At the same time as I shot I seen a flash of light and horrific sound. I
was shooting on high speed continuous and the next couple frames were a
ball of fire and my feet, right before I ran. We all ran to the other
side of the tower, I tried to get everyone in along with my partner and
finally made it in myself. By the time we got inside the 16 had stopped
sliding and rested about 100 ft in front of the tower. I then continued
documenting the work of our base firefighters as they put out the
flames. It was an experience and though I can't officially make any
comments to the matter, I would like to say Capt Stricklin saved
lives... enough said.
For those who are wondering the image is not cleared for public release.
Also for those fellow photogs I was shooting with a D1x with a 300mm,
2.8 @ 1000 and 2000
Thanks,
SSgt Bennie J. Davis III
Still Photographer, USAF

Yes Greg the cockpit photos really look real because they are real (so far
as anyone can tell...the AF is mum). The poor guy had a brain fart and
pulled over the top at the msl altitude used at the T'bird work up
site....which put him nearly 800' agl LOWER than the standard for the
maneuver.
He was essentially unhurt and was immediately reassigned to a job in the
pentagon (that's real...and about as nasty a thing to do to somebody as is
possible).

The problem is one of standard process. Airshow performers all set their
altimeter to zero "0" at the field elevation. Therefore they know what
altitude they can begin or enter different manuvers. However, trying to
remember what elevation the field is at, then add your "standard" entry
altitude is somewhat difficult at 5-9Gs. So during the standard briefs the
airboss at the airshows repeat the request that alitmeters be set to zero
and all altitudes discussed are AGL.
Now, the 'birds and the angels don't do that.

A healthy dose of skepticism is always a good thing, and in the end you may
be right about this photo being faked. FWIW, when I looked at the pixels
sizes in the still shot with the cars there was no variation in pixel size,
something you would expect to see in a spliced photograph. It appears to
me that the videos, and all of the photographs with cars and fields etc., -
are probably real in this case. In addition, they all seem to correlate one
another.
