Yaksters,
Thinking of getting a spinner for my 52. I'm told this obviates the need
for cowl louvers and helps speed up the plane a little. I have my own
thoughts on the matter but want to get your opinions. Anyone have any
sources on where to get them? I'm considering the unit made for the
Pitts Model 12.
Any thoughts pro or con?
Thanks in advance!

Frank,
The spinner on the Pitts Model 12 is an MT assembly made to fit the MTV9 3
blade hub. If you have an MTV9 3 blade prop and the 14" spinner, it is possible
to switch to the larger model 12 spinner by purchasing the spinner dome,
bulkheads. This spinner is not designed to fit the V-530 prop and to my
knowledge, has not been adapted to a 2 blade prop as of yet.
There are two model 12s flying with the V530 prop and Yak 18 spinner designed
for the 2 blade prop. These are available but hard to find spinners. Maybe
some in the Yak community can help you find one of these if you have the 530
prop.

The only thing I could had to Kevin's comments. The Yak 18T spinner will
fit, however it's back plate covers up the timing marks on the prop flange. I
end up using a swing weight protractor to set my mags.
Also I would not eliminate the louvers. Although these engine are really
quite tough, shock cooling is still hard any engine.
I don't think you gain much speed with the spinner. It makes sense but I
could not measure it on my M-14p powered CJ-6a.
It sure gives the engine and plane, a mocho look with that big spinner and
thick bladed prop. Not that Curtis's plane doesn't have "the look" to begin
with. :)

Frank,
If you have the standard Russian V530 paddle prop, the best solution is the
Yak 18T spinner. Retain the cooling louvers regardless of which spinner you
use. Unless of course you choose to use one of the original Les Crowder
designs which if I'm not mistaken, could not be installed if the cooling
louvers were retained.

We tried one of Les Crowder's spinners on 285HP CJ6 which required removing the
shutters.
Cylinder temp. ran too cold with no increase in speed.
Only plus was it looked great!

Hey everyone,
I just got finished putting a new stainless steel exhaust system on my
285HP CJ6A.
I bought it from Doug Sapp and as he promised, it went on really easily.
It is apparently made in the same jigs in which the original exhaust
was built, so the fit was perfect!
So just a little plug for Doug:
Thanks for getting this stuff for us so we can keep 'em flying!
Now if I can only scrounge up some money to add that smoke system....

Hi All
For the engine pros: My yak's chip detector came on a couple days ago.
After pulling filters etc., found some "dust" in oil and a couple tiny
round particles of metal. These could easily be squashed by hand using
flat screwdriver on spanner - metal was therefore soft (aluminium).
Changed oil, cleaned all filters, ran engine on ground for 1/2 hour,
cleaned and checked again, then flew. So far so good. Aircraft just
had annual.
Any ideas where aluminium could come from??
Could the tiny balls be formed by current pasing through ali dust on
chip detector?
Regards
Jorgen

Would anyone happen to have one of those Les Crowder
spinners for sale? The ones that doesn't seem to do any
good, according to yak-list wisdom.

It will not make your airplane fly any faster and it will not materially affect
cooling so if you remove the louvers your engine will run cool. Do it for the
looks. If the looks are not that important, save your money.

Hey Craig, I've got one on my plane but I sure don't want to sell it. My
cylinder head temps are a little low but the engine still runs great with
600 hrs behind the spinner. I don't think low temps are a problem but rapid
temp changes are. I think the spinner does make it faster but my plane is
light also, so it's hard to tell what contributes the most.

Hey Brian; did Betty have one of those? And did Betty have the stock 285? If Betty
did have one of those, did you remove the cowl gills; and is that your reference
to the overcooling? If you still have a picture; I would like to see it
again. rb
